Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I've noticed in the last week or so that the clutch pedal action on the Xantia has become sticky (or 'notchy' for want of a better word) towards the bottom of its' travel. I can push the pedal past the notch and normal service is resumed. :?

With the engine off I can hear a slight clonk at the point where the notch occurs when pushing the pedal...

Mine did this... similar to Anders description.. in this case the (probably badly fitted) release bearing melted and destroyed itself, it then ridged the gearbox input shaft.. finally gave up on one journey..

I brought a clutch kit, but on closer inspection the clutch was almost brand new, I only needed the bearing :(

I filed the shaft carefully...

Change the air filter, once its done its done.

If you know its going to fail on things then get the things sorted before wasting money on a test. There about £45 arent they? Not that cheap!

And also the brake pipe if its a sure failure.

Hello

I am desperate, my 2003 Automatic Xsara HDi drives perfect on high RPM but when it goes down to idle lets say on a red light or a stop sign (gear on DRIVE + brake + air conditioner) the engine starts to choke up some times it shuts down.
My mechanic cut off one of the vacuum controllers (out of the three in the back of the engine...

The unit you have disconnected is the EGR throttle butterfly not the actual EGR valve,follow the piping to the EGR valve,its bolted onto the inlet manifold near the timing belt side,remove & block off the pipe to it & try that.

Hi,

Today I changed both Hydractive spheres on my Xantia and the anti sink one. The anti sink and the rear hydractive were the correct ones but the front hydractive sphere has this number - 96 181 131 then underneath that it are the numbers 8-345. I've checked the GSF sphere chart but can't identify it. Any ideas what it is?

Hi to all

The 8-345 is actually the date of fabrication.

8 means 1998
345 means the 345th day of the year

The date is there because citroen knows that the spheres have a limited life, be it sitting on the shelf or used in some car.

I know it has been on the forum before, but I can't seem to find the links.. get about 2500 hits, and.. :(

While driving to and from Belgium (with 10 crates of Trappist beer 8)) the speedometer seemed to get slightly stuck and if you give the dash a light knock it frees up. With all the Safety cameras around I'll like to fix it. I have had it out...

The sticking speedometer may be as simple as the needle touching the
dial or the glass. Sometimes its the mechanism itself that sticks. Note that the speedometer mechanism is still the good old fashion type with a rotating magnet. Could be magnetic swarf/dust then.

Never been that close to a Xantia Break. If there are no visible door contacts -...

Only just purchased this so im on a steep learning curve!

just joined up and been reading through all the posts about suspension faults!
mines got the sport and normal setting its a 1995 saloon turbo diesel
just replaced the turbo bit of a trial that was,
its all running and its clicks every 4-5 secs or so
suspension goes up ok,but occasionally...

Sometimes , and only when the car has covered a couple of miles , when i take a sharp right i get a metallic noise from the front drivers side wheel area , it sounds like my front pads are squealing , and it don't always do it . any ideas .

For my sins, I have bought another xantia, a 1.9 td sx,1997, with aircon.
the heater blower does not work.
I have changed the resistor pack on the motor, (second hand, but seen working on a peugeot 405) and also the ignition switch.

I have just replaced my two strut tops after reading andmcit post about the topic. While replacing them I noticed that one of my struts leaked LHM oil. I will replace this and was wondering if anyone has experience with the struts from gsf? Are they as good as original from Citroen? Should I replace both sides even if the other one looks fine?

I will check out the O ring #12 and remove the return pipe to see how much LHM that is escaping.

You could disconnect the return pipe yourself and then run the engine and see how much LHM you have leaking past the internal seal. Put them in a bottle to catch any escaping fluid. The amount of the flow will...

thanks to a uninsured driver........ I have to take a trip to scrappies and find a new door! Just how hard ar ethey to change??? I can see two bolts that will be the Physical side ... but what about the electrics etc??? are they just plugs hidden some place?

I've just removed the tailgate on a Xantia saloon. The main wiring loom has large multi plugs on either side of the hinge area. They're in a roof cavity behind the head lining and are JUST small enough to feed out of the roof - it's a fiddle mind.

Watch you don't strip the threaded strut fastenings on the tailgate as I DO agree with other...

Whilst driving last night, the large fibre glass / flexible shield that protects the base of the engine / steering rack parted company with the vehicle. Inspection suggests that the mounting holes had failed.

Is it possible to buy a replacement 3 point belt for the middle seat and remove the lap strap.

I am asking this as the law changes in Sept 2006 for child seats in th UK and have a new addition due in Dec 2006. I will need to fit 3 children in the back of my Xantia and only have the lap strap in the middle at the moment.

This may be a stupid question but how can you tell when to replace them?
On my BX worn out spheres are easy to spot due to a 'pogo'ing effect, but would not Hydractive 3 try to mask this?

Reason I ask is because my 2.0 110HDi (2001, 85,000 miles) seems to have a lot harsher ride from the rear than the front. Major bumps and holes it handles well,...

Having just changed the carb on my AX GT, the car won't run! It starts and splutters, creates loads of smoke etc. Then dies. When it dies, fuel spills out the top of the carb! Not eithe rof the chokes, the two other ventricles downs the sides of it between the chokes. I know jack about carbs sadly, any ideas?

where did the carb you fitted come from and how long had it been sitting around,it probably just needs the top removing and a good clean out/b**w j*b,then check and set the float levels before refitting the top,also why did you change the carb

I have recently acquired a set of Activa alloys intending to fit them to my TD Estate, there are no bolts with them and peering down the bolt holes seems to reveal a flat place for a washer to locate the wheel, just like the speedline alloys on my BX rather than a tapering fitment like the standard Xantia bolts, can an Activa owner put me right...

If you've now got 16 taper type wheel bolts lying about that you don't know what to do with, I will relieve you of 8 of them :lol: Mines got alloys with flat bolts, but I've got a pair of steels with winter tyres on that need tapered bolts. I usually remember I haven't sorted any of the correct bolts out when they forecast snow 10...

I changed the accumulator sphere and LHM last week on my Xantia. (Non anti-sink)

For the first 2 days the regulator cycled at once a minute and the susp stayed up for hours but then it went back to cycling once every 10 seconds and the susp sinking after an hour as it had done before. I'm not really worried about it as it drives fine and is...

Well I bled the brakes, 3 seemed air free but the fluid was murky however the right rear came out like foam at first but then just air free fluid. I reckon I've bled out about a litre of fluid.

After the brakes I thought I'd free up and oil the rear HC valve. So with the rear still on axle stands I disconnected the 'dog bone' and the manual...

My mot it due soon and i know it will fail on the offside handbrake. It has failed on this item only on the lat two years. The mot station have 'cleaned the caliper' on both occasions and it has passed the test.

I had the privilege of sitting in a C6 exclusive today. Nice car.

It is huge and makes the C5 feel small inside, although the funny shaped saloon boot is a bit pokey. Still, it is about 20% bigger than the S-Type Jag.

£38 grand, not sure it is worth it, but I'd love a spin in one.Maybe when second hand.

Ive had a little rear suspension problem with my Activa :wink: and after searching the forum decided to get it up on ramps to check the height corrector was connected properly. Anyway the long cable was loose and I remembered about the plastic clip possibly coming off causing problems. Not knowing what one looked like I had a look under my other...

Anyone put a new stop bulb in a c5 estate i tried to get the black plastic cover off the side but was sure it was gonna break the lense its so tight so iv'e left it for now but a m8 who had a c5 said if the other stop light goes out the car will strop is that true.Also a couple of times when iv'e parked the car and got out the front goes up and...

i was between two minds getting the driveshafts out yesterday with my engine bush adventure, and i kinda started it, only to find out that the 35mm bolt needed to open the hub was hard to get hold of, so i was gonna take the whole lot off, this meant getting the track rod end off the hub thing too.... so here's my question...

Took the cam carrier and cam shaft off my Xantia 2.1td engine on which the cam belt has jumped 2 teeth causing the exhaust valves to come into contact with the pistons. The exhaust valve cam followers/ rocker arms are damaged.

hi

as in my other post the head gasket on my zx td has gone.

i transplanted the engine from another zx which in turn had this engine added at a previous date so i know the mileage but nothing else age etc....

this makes it hard getting bits for it and this is the same with the head bolts:

i went into GSF chelt and they said there was two types...

Its also possible for the bolt holes to fill with crud when the block face is cleaned - just twisting a large drill by hand can usually remove this. Or using a straw - blow out from the bottom of the holes :wink:

Come to think of it my Renault 4 had rthe handbrake on the front wheels too. This also had trailing arms and I suppose on a steep hill may have tried to tuck them underneath itself which would have been ineteresting.

i think about all sorts of weird things, so today i was thinking... say my clutch goes (touch wood it doesn't), can anyone tell me about the clutch change job? Is it hard, does the engine have to come off, will i need to send it to a mechanic?

The front brakes are making a death grind noise so its time for new ones. The problem is that have none of the following:

1) space to change them myself
2) tools to change them myself
3) mechanical ability to change them myself
4) inclination to change them myself

So my question is: What is a reasonable price to pay a garage/ tyre-brake place...

its really easy - and if you have got to do the mounts anyway its not much more work..

dont forget the two alloy regulator valves for the rear calipers though (situated just behind the fuel tank on the botom of the car) - u will need them

Our current xantia shed some of its CV boot a few days ago and ive found the cause as well :(

Basically i need a full set of new bearings that go on the gearbox end of the passenger side driveshaft :(

Does anyone know if GSF do these or if its a Citroen only part and if so whats the part number for them and approximate price??

Any helpfull tips...

sorry to post agian so soon had another thought:

i am going to change the water pump whilst doing the head gasket.

i would like to find a high volume one but think i will stuggle to do that.

do these pumps loose some of their pumping volume over time ie will a new pump do more than the last one?? or do they not deteriorate??

i asked the question becuase at that point i hadnt removed the pump and wasnt suare if it had a rubber impeller or metal.

it took it out and it is meatal, and the one i replaced it with is metal so it will be fine.

the dual water pump idea is intersting - what about some sor of inline electric pump in the top rad hose? - newer...

There is a trend to the thinner oils because they make the engine marginally more economical, once one manufacturer starts doing it all of the others will have to too. I wouldn't worry about it too much, if lots of cars need thin synthetic oil it'll get cheaper and easier to get hold of, eventually you'll not be able to get anything else.

I have owned an HDI Xantia Estate for nearly a year. Sometimes the front suspension has been very hard, and at these times it was higher than normal. At other times it has been fine. The height variation has been greater than specified, perhaps a 40mm range.

Hi
Anybody knows why when I come to a stop the engine idle sometimes sits at 1500rpm. I have to quickly jolt the accelerator pedal quickly to get it to idle normally
Sometimes for a split second when changing gears it sits up at 2500rpm and on deceleration it gives a nasty jolt

OK, I think that I have figured it out.... 8)

Synergie 1.9TD 2000 'V' plate.

Would I be right in thinking that the ME type gearbox is fitted to the TD version of my car, and the MT type gearbox to the petrol variant? Help! cos there two types of cable, and I really don't want a restocking charge if I can help it :wink:

Hi guys, (car is described below)

I decided to check my bottom engine mount today because coming on or off the accelerator you can feel a slight movement. OTher symptoms are slight vibrations under load going up hill and sometimes around corners, anyway...

I went under today and had a play with the mount with a big screwdriver it does seem soft...

i'm glad someone else went through it too, i love my car, and love working with mechanical things, and i feel satisfied with most jobs, but not this one, it drives fine though, i thought the bracket would vibrate against the housing but it's ok so far, i will check it this weekend for signs of premature wear though.

Whip a rear door card off and see if there are some cables with multiplugs taped up to the door, if so get cracking its a doddle.

after many months of being thrashed with extra boost and fueling my head gasket has gone - (totally self inflicted i might add)

the head is off and looks ok and is going for a presure test and skim next week.

I dont want to turn the pressure down on the turbo becuase it wil be not as fun to drive so i am tempted to leave it in its tuned state....

Once again I'm having a really hard time locating Citroen parts over here in NZ.... :evil:

Can someone please tell me if there is indeed a seal kit for the Hydraulic pumps in Xantia's ? This is for a 1997 2 output pump used on the 2.0i 8 valve petrol engine.

I'm getting conflicting stories from different suppliers over here... one is...

i would have thought if that seal has or face plate has not been disturbed it should not leak,

My father has a 93 1.8 8 valve petrol Citroen Xantia which will not start if the engine is hot. He will have been driving for some time, stopped to go shopping etc but when he tries to start the engine it will not fire. Any ideas? Any hints would be welcome. Thanks

I’ve had that at times, when the petrol engine was at operating temperature and getting restarted after being switched off for about 15 minutes.
A second attempt about 10 seconds later with the accelerator pushed half-way down has always cured it.
It’s as per Jeremy’s post, like vapour lock from rising heat.

Hi,
My Xantia boot locks itself after a few minutes of being unlocked. Does anyone know if there is some sort of spring or something that prevents the central locking solenoid from creeping back into the locked position?

Any help gratefully received.

It might work to replace the rubber bellows, but the problem will probably return (in 10 years time).
Or you could get a universal solenoid. Others have used that with success.

Just when I thought I had a bargain, the Head gasket has gone. Its getting hotter all the time and pressurising the header tank. I am doing it at the weekend but have a couple of questions.

The head has not given up yet it still runs, will I need to skim it. Its just that I will then need to get that done during the week and will take the job...

To find out which gasket you need, follow the instructions in the Haynes BOL for measuring piston protrusion.

Having a metal gasket does suggest that the head has been off before. As far as I know, all XUD's left the factory with fiber-metal composite gasket.

And it does also sound like this gasket has failed due to the usual problem of the...
