There's an oil leak around the distributor or distributor mount on our GS. I'm told that this is quite common and that there is an oil seal in there which has probably broken down or gone hard.

Does anyone have a drawing or picture that explains how it all goes together...or even part numbers? I don't know if the seal is bespoke or simply an 'O'...

Filling gearbox

Checking and filling gearbox oil on the GS looks sufficiently awkward that it probably rarely gets done.

Is there an easy way?

We find it quite difficult to change from 2nd to 3rd without a crunch (4 speed). All other actions up and down are fine. It is wishful thinking to imagine double checking the oil will sort this out but no harm in trying!

Our late GS has a GSA sender unit that does not work. New replacements are hard to come by and expensive.

I wonder, does anyone know if the GS saloon fuel tank is the same as the GSA one? If so, I wonder if a GS sender would fit?

Apparently not. I'm told that the tank and sender are different between early and late GS.

Late GS tank and sender are the same as GSA.

I think they continued to sell the G Special (our car) after the introduction of the GSA.

I have learnt that the same thing happens with drive shafts. The GSA shafts and late GS are thicker than the early GS...

The GS wheel has a large hole in the middle. Can this be used to balance the wheel conventionally ? Or does the GS wheel require centerless balancing like DS and 2CV wheels?

That's great to hear! I also got confirmation from Chevronics. I'm now looking for another wheel with 10 holes around the rim that matches my current set. The car currently has a non-matching spare from a GSA. I also remember the previous owner installed a tube in one of the tires as the rim wasn't entirely airtight.

Stuck dogtooth nut for fan

I'm trying loosen the 42mm dogtooth bolt, supposed to be torqued to 130 lb/ft but it doesn't turn. Since it's bolted to crankshaft, is it safe to use impact wrench?

I took mine off with an impact gun this weekend. The nut took the threaded starter dog with it. I don't think that's how it's supposed to come apart, but it went back together just fine.

Where's this seatbelt from?

My '73 GS has a retracting 3-point seatbelt for the driver's side which I suspect is not original to the car. The receptacle looks like this:

I'd like to find a matching one for the passenger side, but none of the parts suppliers have one that looks like it. Does anyone know what Citroen this might have come from?

80000 km service

My GS hit 80000 km yesterday (doing 120km/h down a California highway). What's on the 80000km service checklist, and anything specific I should watch out for while doing it?

The list so far:

Inspect, tension, and possibly replace timing belts
Hydraulic fluid flush
Adjust rocker clearances
Ignition timing?
Replace the in-line fuel filter...

How to remove headlight switch on GS?

Hello, trying to remove the headlight switch from my 1973 GS but boths sides of the switch is bigger than the hole on column.

I pulled out the plastic piece, it was stuck but popped out. Drilled the rivets and cleaned the contacts inside, now switch works perfectly. I wonder why dipped beam works in both first and second position. CX light switch also works like this. Must be a Citroën design 😅

Handbrake? Whooshing sound at low speeds

This was the problem that started me down replacing the front disks and both pads. I've fitted new disks and new pads, and the problem is still there.

Symptom: A whooshing sound at wheel frequency, particularly at low speeds. I believe this is from the handbrake pads -- before I installed them, turning the wheels (with the car on stands) produced...

The smaller spring (#3 in your image) isn't pressing the pads against the disk, but it is pressing them firmly down in their bores. I'm guessing this kept the pads from retracting fully when the brake was released. I tried flipping one of them over so it's not pressing as hard on the pads and they're free to move. I'm redoing the inner CV joints on my 1973 GS Club. The repro boot came with a single tube of dark-grey grease. Looking at the service manuals, they specify 200g (!) of grease on the inner joints, which feels like a lot! A few questions:

Those of you who did this job before, how much grease did you use?

Clutch travel

Too much clutch travel
On our GS the clutch pedal goes too close to the floor to be ideal. What might be the problem? The clutch doesn't slip at all. It was replaced in '09 and has done around 5000 miles since then. The adjuster on the bulkhead looks as if it is on the limit.

So, what is going on? Has the clutch fork bent? Has the cable...

I'm in the middle of a bunch of front drive work on a LHD '73 GS Club -- replacing both brake disks and putting new gaiters on the driveshafts. I'm having trouble with the left-hand-side brake caliper. The supply line enters that caliper from the brake pedal, and the line is secured in some sort of bracket that's attached to the caliper itself....

Fuel tank sender

Does anyone know if the GS sender and the GSA sender are interchangeable? GS has two leads and GSA three.

Our 1980 GS has a sender with three leads which I imagine is a GSA unit, the car being late and during the changeover period.

It looks like it doesn't work and needs replacing.

Any current or past GS owners out there that happen to have a spare wheel and a jack they no longer require lying around in their garage?

The wheel ought to be the design that doesn't have vent holes. I think this was used on the last GSs and then GSAs?

I still have one spare as shown in my comments above, it's the one on the right hand side in the images. Please note the welded on clip on the top, it is different to the left and you would need either to ascertain that it would fit into any jack location support...

Filling the car up this afternoon I managed to soak Tesco's carpark and my feet in petrol. This is the first time I have put a significant (20 litres) of fuel in the car. I've not spent any time on the filler pipe etc so only have myself to blame.

So...

Are there supposed to be hose clips on the rubber pipe?

Pressure regulator leaking

There's a small leak from the release valve/screw/bolt on our pressure regulator. I don't want to over tighten for fear of stripping the thread.

Is there a simple solution or trick that I am missing? I think it may be a 'ball and cup' type of seal but don't really know.

Any advice including advice to live with it???

Hello.

I need to change the brake discs on my 1978 GS.

Can the discs be removed without removing the callipers. I had a swearing session with the car trying to remove the callipers. It seems an impossible task as one of the calliper retaining bolts is under the subframe!

Haynes manual etc says to unbolt and remove caliper and withdraw the disc...

Not much going on - so . . .

Snow and ice can make some impressive sculptures and patterns, but metal?

This is a wheel bearing race from the front of the GS. It was replaced several years ago, but the fascination is in the location, and formation of the indents. It's as though they were engraved with a tool, yet they were made by the passing...

Sorry to be after more parts but I need a couple of the clips that locate the Rzeppa joint (on the front end of the drive shaft) against the splined end of the shaft to avoid it sliding in and out.
I got some from Simply Bearings who state 24 mm outside and 22 inside diameters but when they came they were 2mm thick so no good; does anyone know...

These have a wierd shaped slot in the head. Countersunk, part groove part hole.
I have nothing in my arsenal of tools that will shift them. Does such a male socket exist? None of the regular parts suppliers have anything like.

Bit fuzzy, but they should be visible.

I think you are correct. Darrin at Citroen Classics in Staines has said he has not found a tool that fits, but used an adapted flat bit in an impact driver.
I'll be looking at concocting a special !

I am working on my oil pump to cancell leaks, therefore I replaced the inner shaft seal that came out hard like iron. But, it seams that oil comes out also from the bolts that secure the pump in the engine case. When I screws them out the where covered with deep layer of oil. When you think of it, oil can flow inside the pump through the bolts...

Leaking Rain water

My LHD GS lets in water when it rains, it runs down to drip off brake pedal switch, nothing is immediately obvious, windscreen rubber looks good. Is there a common fault?

Could be leaves blocking the drain holes under the bonnet - wherever they might be!

I had the same and there is a rubber 'vent' thing at the top of the wheel arch, squeeze it so it opens and loads of crap and water will come out.

Flush it out with a hose once it is flowing to clear out any remaining debris.

My GSA had the same problem - an L...

Hi

The headlight and direction light indicator lights are no more working so I need to remove the instrument cluster and change the bulbs. The car is Citroen gsa. Does the part which has a car image come off separately or should it be removed with satelites etc. I saw one sgrew at the top and I also found two screws at the bottom but it did not...

You have to lever out the high/low beam switch. Use a plastic lever so you won't damage it. Then you will see sort of circular spring clip type thing holding the headlight switch barrel in place. be careful not to damage the clip else the fingers lose springiness and the barrel won't stay in its place when you reassemble it. Also, there are pins...

Chevronics has the outside ones but supposedly nil stock on inside ones, I'm told.
I need to replace the window regulator so want the parts replaced at the same time.

The centre, long pipe, on my '75 GS Pallas has a torpedo type section made up of a folded seam. I suspect it acts as a resonator, or sound absorption device. Well the seam has given out, roaring like a good'un. 8-)
I opted for a straight pipe without the intermediate silencer to replace same, but shipping restrictions from Germany to UK meant...

Just an update.
Having been 'put off' from ordering from 'Mr. Auto' (parts allegedly slow in arriving, and any refunds likewise), I ordered from Chevronics. The only difference between the GS and the GSA rear box is the final bends in the tail pipe. GSA and GS are the same other than that, and will fit. No difference in pipe diameters. Walkers...

I have not done one myself, but the Haynes and Autobook series have the procedure. Do you have either? Or shall I plagiarise a bit? Basically it's getting stuff out of the way to drift, or use a rawlbolt to extract the silentbloc bushes (so it is said!).

It's one of the one-make single seater racers run under Formule Bleue back in the '70 in France.
It had 1015cc GS engine, modified with cams and Weber 40 IDFs amongst others.
It seems they are still running them (presumably under historic racing series).
It would be appreciated if anyone can elaborate on their mechanical specifications -...

Finally got around to fitting the Lumenition Optronic kit.

Started up fine, and seems to run a little smoother on a short five mile run. Running a Xenon lamp for 33° advance at 2500rpm showed a very steady mark, much more so than with the cassette points set up. The dizzy is at its maximum travel in the annular slots (was same with points), and...

Contacted Autocar yesterday after they had my kit for a couple of weeks, and got a reply straight away. They have found the module in good order, and are sending me a new silver MS4 coil to replace the green one. It's being despatched today.

Still trying to sort my fuel gauge. anyone got a pic of their instrument dash wired up, I am missing a wire from the fuel gauge spade connector but do not know where it goes or comes from. The wiring diagram doesn't show it due to it being the printed circuit board.

Sounds like you may have an issue with corrosion and/or connections. Amongst other things fuse holder clips can cause wierd results that defy logic - unless your an auto electrician!! And I'm not - Mike Phelan would be one such bod, but he's over on the 2cvGB forum as a rule.

window winder trouble

So trouble comes in threes, just when I put the car on the market - first the windscreen crack, second flooding of the cabin, now driver's side window winder is reluctant to raise (and to a lesser extent, lower) the glass. When turning the winder, it feels like it's failing to catch on teeth and spin. If I turn very slowly and carefully, it does...

Well, I have been wondering about this but now I need a replacement windscreen as mine has a 4 inch crack which is growing everyday. The German parts website has a couple of different ones, 5mm & 7mm and apparently laminated and non-laminated (toughened, I guess - I don't fancy driving behind one of these). Obviously I won't know which one I have...

Hello I could use some help with setting my timing belts, I'm restoring my 1984 GSA 1300 motor and I bought new belts and tension bearings, I do not have a good manual the Haynes manual I have does not show the correct install of the belts, they have the white marks on them that I lined up with the marks on the cams and the main crank.

Recently I decided to convert my GSA 1981 to C-matic as it was years ago.
I got gearbox out of GSA 1983 which included parking lock gear which is different from earlier models.

I want to share with you a strange issue that I became aware with.
Locating parts is not easy especially for the right parts. I had experience more then once with parts out of spec manufactured by well known manfacturer.

At the photo two tie rods; at the left a new one that I purchased a year ago...

Assuming the female thread of the rod end goes all the way in, shorten the threaded section of the new rod to simply match the old one. The rest of the rod looks more or less right.

I have to do this process after replaceing the brake regulator.

After reading the Hynes manuel I don't understand why I should take off the wheels and push up the arm to get inlet situation.

Selecting the upper mode is enough to open rhe corrector valve.

I would like to know what is the simple way and what steps are needed for...

Flywheel bolts

GS flywheel bolts 'appear' to be unavailable. Whereas 2cv flywheel bolts are. The 2cv bolts are M8 x 1 x 27. Can anyone confirm they are the same size on the GS engine?

Thank you Mac. They are shank bolts, and specifically 'stretch' bolts, so not supposed to be used twice. Yeah, right. None in hand just now and am using 'used'. Done it before with flywheel bolts, though never with big end bolts (different engine).
