EOLYS FLUID

EOLYS FLUID
I have a 2001 C5 2.2HDi Est on which the 'Diesel Additive Low' message has flashed up once this weekend.
I have just paid 98 pounds for 4.5 litres of the said fluid from a not so local Main Stealer with the intention of refilling the tank myself and getting a local garage to reset the ECU for me.
However, the Service Manager at the Main Stealers said that he would not bother until the message stayed on and then it would just need topping up. No need to drain the old fluid out and No resetting is necessary on my car.
Can someone categorically confirm that this is true please.

the earlyer system has a level float in the tank, and the later system has an electronic counter, i belive as long as you top up the early system before it runs out there is no need to reset the ECU,
also the early type uses EOLYS fluid and the later uses a diferant type of fluid, which you must not use the wrong type for your system or mix them,
besides all this there is sensors and a filter in the system, the filter is in the exhaust system forward i belive of the cat, which you can take out for replacing or i have heard some people steam clean them and re/fit,
these filters are about 140 squid and are exchange units

yes but aparently the replacement will be an exchange unit which has already been cleaned, allbeit in you would hope in an environmetaly freindly maner,
the parts manager in my local pug dealer said the ones they fit/sell as exchange units usualy have rust on the metal parts of the unit,
so he belives they have been steam cleaned

'allbeit in you would hope in an environmetaly freindly maner'
That's entirely my point, unless pointed out people could think it's OK to do in their garden, side of the road, etc. I'm sure you wouldn't just say drain the oil and throw it away. Also what are the hazards to the person doing the job?
I'm not wishing to sound critical but these are the reasons the authorities try to stop some activities, withdraw chemicals, etc. I'm all for DIY but not at environmental or personal risk. There recent 'fuss' about Asbestos has really highlighted for me the damage that can be done unknowingly.
Steve.

This particle filter!
I am assuming its the second box in the cat - or the removable bit?
I have removed a heavy filter from the back of i assume is the cat (4 bolts) but it does not look too bad although i have never seen a good one or bad one before to compare against.
Does anyone know of any pics??
Also, trying to work out why the particle filter is behind the cat and not in front? If we are expecting the particle filter to get clogged, should we not be expecting a huge bill for a clogged cat soon?? as the soot has to pass through this first?

AFAIK the particle filters are before the cat, the idea being that the trapped soot is periodically burned off and it is of course hotter there.

would be nice to have this confirmed before i destroy the cat!!
I was going on the info from here:
http://www.citroenet.org.uk/passenger-c ... tech3.html
which clearly shows the Particulate filter behind the cat.
Also, this rear box is fairly easy to remove but the first box looks a pain.

That is completely different to the photo's I have seen previously on the C5 system.
The particle filters have been a small cannister like the one in the Puegeot picture ant the bottom of the down pipe, ahead of the cat, which is substantially larger than the thing depicted in the drawing you have linked to.
Hang fire while someone who has actually dealt with one of these wee beasties comes along with definitive info.
Those stated exhaust temperatures don't jibe with what I have previously seen but I don't have a cite for them at the moment.

Hi Andy wheeler is right the fap or particle filter is the larger part to the rear of the cat as for cleaning out we have tried it on my brothers c5 after spending 4 hours with a high temp pressure washer we got 3000 miles before it clogged up again we then fitted an exchange unit from citroen and as of now 40,000 miles later no problems.
If it helps you to understand the workings of this system this is how it works each time you fill up with diesel (there is a macnetic switch in the filler neck) it senses how mutch fuel is in the tank before and after filling and then injects a measured amount of Eolys fluid into the fuel tank,
while the car is running it senses the exhaust pressure before and after the fap filter via the 2 pipes attached fore and aft when the pressure gets to great before the filter the ecu then triggers the injection system to fire the injectors after the main firing sequence to start a burn off in the cat/fap this is monitered by temp probes in the cat/fap assy the regeneration is complete when the monitered pressures reach the pre set levels this operation can also be triggered by driving the car at 3000rpm for 15 minutes this is what the dealers do to regenerate the filter on city cars.
the Eolys fluid lowers the temp that the particles burn at by approx 200celcius otherwise they will not burn as the exhaust will not reach the600-650celcius required which will block the filter with disasterous results we have had three 2.2s with blocked filters running up on their own oil all because the customers ignored the warning lights.
The electronic counter has to be reset for the Eolys when you fill the tank there are two counters that need resetting
btw the filters from citroen are dipped in a high temp chemical bath to clean them whereas the ones supplied by the motorfactors down here are not as clean and rarely do any more than 20,000 miles the citroen ones do the 60-70,000miles our customers get the choice now and most go for the genuine option
I hope this throws some light on the subject
cheers
Mick

The motorway running 'cure' to clean the FAP was reccomended by my local independent specialists,as I'm travelling a lot on the motorway, daily in fact I run the C5 up to what I think is 3000 rpm as the rev counter reads about two marks below what is should be still, most mornings its getting a good thrash for about 20 mins or so,before in nice slow finish to park up,the emissions light came on last month as previously it never did more than 20 miles a day at slow speeds, since I've took it over its getting constant high speed use and it seems to be improving it somewhat,I've topped up the Eolys and it needs resetting on the computer,a job for my local specialists
