Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I have a 1997 2.1 Xantia with which I am more than pleased.
One little problem soon after cold start is that the engine starts hunting at about 1500-2000 rpm for about 5/6 seconds. I have to push the clutch in and wait while it goes back to normal.
I'm thinking it's an ECU issue due to drive by wire. I am reluctant to disconnect the battery and...

i'll a closer look tomorrow, i did look a while back and the throttle cable felt ok ,it's as if there is a delay from what you do with the accelerator pedal to what the engine does and yes the bubbles do get worse if you squeeze the bulb.

Hi
I need to change the spheres on my Xantia 2.1 SX
I have done the center sphere on the front but now need to change the other
5 as the ride is getting abit bouncy.
I know there must be many other posts with details on this but I just can't seem to find them!

Any one fancy doing me an idiots guide to doing this job?

The 2002 Xant I just bought comes with what looks like the base model radio. Its a small single DIN sized cassete/radio unit, but has steering wheel controls.

Is an upgrade possible? Something out of another Xant or a Peugeot? Is the protocol of the controls documented somewhere? Maybe I can hack it to work with another remote capable unit?...

I replaced my stock radio cassette with a Sony head unit. I stuck in an Autoleads PC99-09 remote interface cable and Bob's your uncle. The cables are about 30 quid in Halfrauds, but I was lucky enough to pick one up...

hi
ive got a 1996 P plate 1.9 d lx xantia A/C that has problems with the cooling fans. i have trawled through the posts already with regard to the wiring and testing which has helped greatly.
i need to remove the complete unit of both fans as the previous owner has cut and rejoined wires from one fan to the other as only one fan has a blade on.

im going to attempt adjusting the front ride height on my 95 xantia 1.9td this week i know about the clamp on the roll bar needing loosening and the small movement needed to affect an adjustment but my question is i have been told that adjustment can be made by loosening the bolt where the height adjuster rod rod attaches to the adjuster...

I'm going to change the front and back brake pads on my Xantia tomorrow, is there any problems I can expect or is the brakes on these cars as straight forward as most Fords and Vauxhalls? Also can anyone tell me if a car needs the back plate covering the back disc for it's m o t?

I think I'll buy a suitable drift before trying it again, I wasn't sure how much abuse it would take so I was using a normal hammer. I noticed the end of the pin starting to splay, that's when I gave up. Your right about the WD 40, It wasn't helping atoll but I'll give the diesel a try.

I have just started to get a judder at between 35-40 mph on my 97 1.9tdi vsx Seems to get worse when I accellerate then disapears at around 45mph I had the wheels balanced and replaced one tyre, However the judder is still there.It does not seem to be comeing up thru the steering It seems the whole car is shaking. Should the gear change (floor panel) on the Xantia Automatic be illuminated at the gearstick. I took one for a drive this evening and there is no illumination on the floor at the base of the gearstick- wondered if this panel should be lit,or is the indicater on the dashboad considered sufficient. Perhaps somebody could advise me.

Hi,

I got given the radio from a MK2 Xantia, the one with a DIN socket for a CD changer, by a friend and have put it in place of the radio in my MK1 Xantia.

Trouble is that the steering controls for volume, seek, etc., won't work for the newer radio despite all the connector sockets on the back being identical.

HI had to replace the alternator belt tensioner on my 2.1 TD Xantia and it took over a week to get on and get round to fit it, during that time the car sat with the battery and ECU dissconnected, just put it all back together and when i turn the ignition on all i get is the Battery light, no other warning lights at all, the code pad works and...

My Dad has just bought a C4 and is still frusttrated by it shutting down into 'economy' mode after 30 mins (same as his 02 Xsara). Now, I have heard a rumour that the dealer can turn off or adjust this feature via the diagnostic computer. His local service agent, however, has denied all knowledge. Anbody (er, Wheeler.... :lol: ) know the truth...

Make plenty of notes and take pictures at each stage of dismantlement. Tag the wiring connectors and index all the parts on the steering column. It takes ages but it's not technically demanding.

Is there anything that's obvious inside to see/clean/repair/dismantle in situ
etc before I get a whole replacement and attempt to tackle the grotty
looking pipe nuts on the joints to the original?

It's most definitely leaking from the rigid end cap on the rear end of my VSX...

Yeah, seems like an uncommon problem. As malcolm says the diaphram on that end can be replaced in situ without removing any pipes, so I'd be trying that first if you think the flare nuts are going to round off...

If the diaphram can't be sourced on its own perhaps obtain...

If anyone lives near cardiff and wants a fairly good interior for a xantia theres one in a scrap yard. All seats, headrests and doorcards present.

After almost 2 weeks of Xsara ownership, I've noticed a slight strangeness in the temp gauege.

I live atop a very steep and narrow hill in a quant little countrified area*, and while ascending said hill with a warm engine (having driven 15 miles from Bath) the temp gauge decided that the engine was completely cold. I didn't actually see it drop,...

My journey to work is 5 miles, if its a hot day, the aircons on and I thrash the knackers off the engine, the temp gauge is just at normal by the time I get there. In winter it barely moves off cold on the same journey.

I’ve been trying to work out how to improve the performance of my Xantia, see my other post on poor acceleration. :( I would be very interested to know if anyone has a photo of the EGR system alternatively have a good description of how to disconnect it?

Ahhh yes.. Electronic cold start advance.. of course.

While I remember... it may also be linked with the glowplug post-heat system, which is cancelled as soon as you press the accelerator more than a couple of mm.

I have never tried it but I dont see why not, although you will have to change the injector pipes as well as the injection order is different on the Bosch pump. I fitted a Bosch pump in place of a CAV on a BX some years ago and found the the back plate will accomodate either, with two alternative sets of holes.

OK bear with me, this is a long story!

Last year, the ECU light appeared on the dash of Mother Dearest's 2000 Xsara HDI. A trip to Citroen revealed a Low Voltage fault code and an Engine Immobiliser fault code. The Citroen mechanic cleared the faults for the princely sum of £50 and said to return the car if it happened again. How's that for...

I think the system will eventually put the warning light off of its own accord if it detects the fault has cleared. (Someone told me it does it after the 12th time the car has started since the last time it detected the fault but don't quote me on that!)
So, if the flat battery in the keyfob was the cause of the light coming on it should at some...

Is it me, or is the Synergie based on the styling of an XM, i think this because I notice the rear ligts are the same as the XM estate?

Well, now you come to mention it, all members of the Citroen family from around that period have a likeness in that from whatever angle you look at them you just know they're a Citroen in the same way that all Pugs from that period have a certain Pugness about them.

Not as bad as all the F**ds these days, they look just like a set of those...

r reg 2.1 diesel xantia (essex). off side front piston in caliper is sticking, as you have to turn the piston as you push it in its not as easy to get it back in. does anyone have any idea's how to free it up (its binding)

i've had a problem with my 2.1td xantia now for a while and i'm convinced that it's to do with the epic fuel pump so i've been think of changing it for a mechanical one that will be able to take veg oil, am i right in thinking that i'll need a bosch pump and injectors from a xm or will the pump from anything else work, has anyone done this before...

Ill ask on the veggie oil forum and find out for you but im not sure it will do it without checking. is it the same pump as fitted to the 1.9td engines as if so then it will be fine :)

Hi,

some time ago I began having problems with the heater blower in my Xantia (with Aircon, without climate control).
Sometimes the blower wouldn't start and I thought: The ignition switch problem.
Then I installed a relay, which probably was a good idea, but didn't fix the problem.
I discovered that I usually could get it going by hitting it and...

My ZX makes a whistling noise when revved above 3000rpm under load. Having read the posts on EGR I'm wondering if this 120 000 mile engine has got bunged up with soot etc. It didn't used to whistle like this.

I intend to disable the EGR now anyway. Is there anything else that might be causing the whistle? It's a lot louder than the usual turbo...

The handbrake on my Xsara appears to completely not work. This does not come as a great surprise, since this appears to be a common trait on all Citroens; what was a surprise was to find that the handbrake works on the rear wheels, not the front ones. I thought it was only Ever Other Car Manufacturer In The World that connected their handbrakes to...

Jim and I put a few more gallons of clean diesel in my old 1.9TD last night to clear it through a bit more as while the cam belt was off, we had snow which the veg in the fuel system didn't take kindly to.

The engine runs, but is very lumpy and produces lots of white smoke.
If we disconnect the lift sensor, it runs much smoother and the taco...

On top of the bellhousing, directly above the flywheel. It's a round black component held in with a small bolt and has a thickish black cable running from it to a brown 3 pin plug.

How easy is it to remove the fuel level indicator from the tank and clean it up, as mine really does give false readings, i can put £10 in the car and the light never goes out, always says its empty.

I put £15 worth of diesel in the old girl two days ago, when i turned the ignition at the pump to pull out of the garage, it was above the red light...

Hi All,

Long time no speak - but I've just been given a rather tidy 2000 model Xsara HDI Estate by Mother Dearest, which makes a nice replacement for my 180,000 mile Xantia TDI.

Anyhoo, tonight I decided I would fit my Blaupunkt Santa Cruz MP34 stereo into the car. The ISO plugs fit, the extra adaptor from the Phillips fits, even the factory-fit...

I had a wardrobe door fly through my windscreen at 60 mph last week but managed to come away unscathed.
Autoglass have fit a new windscreen (with rain and light sensors) but now I seem to have a black plastic strip stuck to the top of the windscreen on the passenger side that I don't recall seeing before.
It has a thick cable coming from it and...

Could the leather from say a VSX or Exclusive trim xantia be moved over easily into an SX xantia if its electric at all??

I may be able to get some cheap leather and other bits from a VSX or an exclusive(if its makes a difference) but want to know how easy it would be to hook it all up for th front seats if anyone has compared the cars side by...

Leather for an estate is quite rare.i think ive seen it once but i guess if you really wanted it a retrim would be the cheapest option as i bet citroen wouldnt sell off the sets they have in storage that cheap...

I've got a slight leak from my front exhaust pipe which includes the 'cat'.
Has anyone successfully replaced the cat pipe with a non cat pipe?

I need something bigger than the car I drive since I now own 2 dogs. So I was thinking maybe and estate or some 4x4.

I dunno if I want a french car tho, not that my xsara has been unreliable, I've been lucky with that in that its been perfect, but form the reputation of french cars I dunno if I wanna tempt fate.

Can anyone reccomend the xantia...

Adtrader is another source of XMs. You will have to be prepared to travel, I have bought most of mine 200 miles or so away.

Head gasket problems are probably the worst you will find, and although they are do able, they are not easy. I did mine a couple of years ago and have covered about 40 k since, virtually trouble free. The usually fail at...

This is an interesting (and frustrating) one.

Since I've had the Xsara I've been plagued by bad gearchanges and rough clutch control. Normally I pride myself on my smooth clutch operation, but the Xsara's clutch has me stumped. It seems to have stiff spots - it's not exceptionally heavy, but it's almost as if it wants to stick in certain places....

You may be able to feel if its the cable. the classic is reluctance to release - ie it seems to stick down then suddenly let go when you start to move your foot. The other is that it seems lighter on release than when pushed down.

Reminds me of when I bought a Renault 21 many years ago - clutch cable felt worn - and the vendor ( a trader) said...

When wedded to an automatic gearbox, Cruise Control gives you complete autonomy of the vehicle - even after stopping on the road. Once speed is back over about 50kph, a flick of the button, and you are back to almost no pedal motoring, which on long trips is an added safety feature, as it allows the movement of feet without any lack of attention...

The story.

A chap down the road had the aux belt come off his HDI engine, now rather than look for the reason, he pops a new one on. Well 50 miles later, the new belt comes off and the engine stops.

He came and asked my what might be wrong, so I told him that the auto tesioner at the top will be leaning over and the belt will have slipped...

Just got my 1998 Xantia TD back together after fitting a new clutch, it has the non adjustable cable and theres slack in the system preventing proper gear selection? is there a way of waking up the auto adjuster or is it time for a new cable?

hi,
i was hoping some one might be able to help me,
i have brought a activa from ebay, thinking it would be a cheap runaround. the problem is the suspension seems to have a mind of its own when stopped with the engine running. it can get very jolting at times.
when driving its not so bad.
does any one have any ideas?

I've been having trouble with the aux belt spring tensioner (early type) for some time. It's been getting worse lately, banging away and slipping the first sign of heavy load if it's warm, wet, or cold - so most of the time really! Looking at the tensioner I could see that the hole in the moving part was actually clear of the fixed part - meaning...

Nice one, have you seen how much it costs for the tensioners?

Why do you think it's got 20p's worth of threaded bar stuck in it.... :wink: And that's before you consider the 1/2 day's work to fit the new one .

The belt is the right one (1710) - the spring (or something else) in the tensioner is just knackered so it doesn't sit in the right...

I have a 1.4i west coast Xsara (1999 T). I would say it'a in excellent condition apart from some small wee dents you get at supermarkets. It's done 97000 miles and has fsh. I'm getting it Mot'd and serviced this week and it has over 5 months tax.

I bought this car last november for £650 from an auction and paid another £100 in fees.

I may be buying a new xantia and it has the wrong barrel on one door. Does anyone know if it is possible to get a replacement which matches the others for sensible money? Or would I be best getting a full set from a scrap yard.

Also it is missing the remote keys, how hard is it to find a plip body and get the correct key cut to fit it? Can they...

Right chaps, our old faithful has thrown a wobbler.
The rear nearside door won't open from either the outside or the inside.
Normally I'd associate this with a stuck lock mech but all the locks are regularly greased & it was working perfectly fine days before.
One can feel the centeral locking locking/unlocking & the deal lock activating.

So...

.... the central locking motor just not unlocking fully on that rear door and he suggested tapping (hitting) the motor at the same time as operating the plip to open the doors...Voila! Success; he did seem to think it might not last very long and suggested that I bring the car in for a replacement motor (£150) including parts and labour...I think...
