Stuck brake slider

Post by Chlorate »

Christmas holidays.
Bored.
Time to do some of the things that need being done with my car.

So changed my front discs to get rid of the warped one and upgraded my pads to Green Stuffs.

But it looks like the caliper on the driver's side has a stuck slider, one of the guide pins doesn't slide very easlily.

Going to take the pads out again tomorrow and see if I can free it up.
Anyone got any better advice than attacking it with some 3 in 1 and a hammer?

Tis a ZX Volcane for all those who couldn't figure it out

Calipers are Lucas Girling CJN48s (vented discs etc)

Thanks guys.

I usually take the bracket off the car and stick it in a vice on the bench. A good long soak with plus gas should see it right, maybe a heat with a blow torch if it's really bad (after removing the rubber boot of course). Now I take the sliders out and clean them at every pad/disc change even if they seem fine. Stuck sliders cause other problems, probably why you have a warped disc. I managed to knacker a wheel bearing with a stuck slider  I suspect you have the same calipers as I do on my 405, apparently they are bad for stuck sliders and should be cleaned reguarly.

The slider does rotate, so I'm guessing It's not so bad.
But I don't really want to take it completely off the car unless I really need to.
Will see how it goes tomorrow, If I can't get it free with the caliper in situ I'll take it off and do what you suggest.
Thanks for the quick reply.

if it rotates you will be able to just pull the slide pin right out, then squirt somting like brake cleaner onto and into the pin and pin tube, then push some paper towel into the tube to clean it out, re/copper slip and bung it back together, without removeing the carrier from the hub,

if you need new parts but i dont think you will with this type, here is the OE part No. 4439.17

I think Silicone brake grease is what you want in there . It resists salt and corrosion like no other.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

After a bit of gentle persuasion and some 3 in 1 spray the stuck slider came out, not a trace of grease on it.
Cleaned it out with brake cleaner and more 3 in 1. Good smear of copper grease and shoved it back in.

Took the car for a test run around the Ashford ring road and to Canterbury and back (so a good 20 miles with lots of long straight sections of road to test the brakes).
The car doesn't pull to the right anymore and no wheel vibration on braking.
So we're all good now :D

Even though they haven't fully bedded in yet, the Green Stuff pads have made a hell of a difference. Definitely going to keep using them in the future.

Straightened up the steering wheel too, it was getting annoying.

Still to do on the car:
-Fix the mysterious coolant leak
-Find out what the bang noise coming from the back is
-Mend the central locking so the passenger door unlocks
-New door mirrors
-Radio antenna
-Lots of T-cutting

At least it's giving me something to do over the Christmas break.

The pads were £35 for the set, I got my friend Martin to stick them to one of his orders. But you can get them directly from EBC online. http://www.ebcbrakesdirect.com

Hope this helps.

try kitchen cream cleaner as its a lot lot cheaper than T CUT, but as with T CUT only do a small section at a time, as T CUT and cream cleaner contain amonia so you risk bleaching the paint work
