Xantia PAS Pinion Valve Removal

Post by addo »

I know a good few people here have swapped theirs over or even kitted it.

What I am hoping to hear, is how feasible it is to do on the street. Are the pinion valve to rack housing bolts FT, or just tight?

Any other snags with valve removal when working under the car like this (with due acknowledgement of the usual safety concerns)?

Thanks, Adam.

You WILL need to remove the Rack for BEST access, as the feed pipes can be DAMM tight BETWEEN the pinion valve and and feed block

Rack will come out IF YOU LOWER the subframe first... which is NOT as bad as you think it is with a jack under it..

Remove UJ, undo track rod ends, undo feed pipe, undo return pipe, best done at the join to the rubber connection, undo the 2 18mm bolts, remove the small RAM ruten pipe at passenger side, get a 2nd jack, support subframe, undo the 3 18mm bolts, lower subframe, monouvre rack out..

the pinion the rack bolts arent that tight, as Paul says the pipe nuts are FT tight,

i did one a few months back and i found the only way i could crack off these little darlings, was with my shortend 12mm split ring spanner on each of the pipe nuts in turn, i placed a long steel bar against the end of the spanner handle through from under the wheel arch and gave it a sharp tap wint a hammer, worked a treat,

the rest was plane salling

I not got split pipe spanners :( only standard spanners, I must invest in some split union pipe spanners! No doubt Id get a lot more unions undone WITH OUT needing mole grips :o

Malcolm, was the stickiness of those tube nuts due to UK style corrosion, or just tightness?

What size are they - 10mm? I've a half-decent spread of Gedore brand flare nut spanners that might see me good...

no addo not tight through corrosion, these pipe nuts are always very very FT tight,

and they are 12mm and yes Gedore are very good qualaty, mind if the 12mm one is to long i would begrudge cutting one of them down to fit,

my one is a cheap droped forged spanner i cut down years ago for a similar job, it is now about 4inch's long,
but as i did i said earlier i used a long drift to give the end of the spanner a sharp tap as i could not free them off in any other way
