Headlamps out is the easiest way in, not as bad as it sounds.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

They are thinking of the dealer doing the job and charging lots of money...

Headlight removal is easy but foglight bulb can also be changed from under the car. In my mk2 Xantia I have changed the left side (battery side) like that. Bulb type is H1. Rotate bulb holder to remove. The other side is more difficult since the bumper gap is very small.

Then headlamp is the only choice.
You need torx (T40) to remove 3 screws that hold the headlamp package (in a mk2). Two on top easly can be accessed.
Third screw is below and can be reached with a long tool or an extension. (
a small piece of magnet is useful)

i change the bulb this afternoon. by removing the headlight as described
by vertvaga, thanks for that. but i did notice whilst doing it that its possible to do it with no tools (if your forarms not too big) by removing the indicator light first you can just about reach the foglight bulb holder through the space ...a quick twist and its out

What's the knack?
I'm unsure how to remove the foglight bulb - I can get access OK from underneath, but it doesn't seem to twist out, with lubrication. What's the knack?
Here's a picture.

Picture attachment, great! I like that
John, I'll define how it's in mine and I guess it's similar in 2000 model.
I can see that you were able to disconnect the connector of the left side fog light. The bulb holder (black cylindrical part) should also come out by rotating 90 degrees. I don't remember which direction. I think it was fixed in the same way as the bulb holder of the corner signals which is easy to check.

@VertVega: Thanks! I'll give that a little force.
....figured it had to have a picture for ID, eliminate doubt and fog words.
My Owners Handbook, and Haynes, say nothing about this kind of fixture..only the fog lamp which pops out of the front of the bumper. Gentle force didn't work, so i thought I'd be sure before I proceed... 8)
I needed to be sure whether it was not a 'sealed unit', and wanted an answer...Picture attachment, great! I like that

good job! After reading your reply I had to go out and try just to see how it goes by removing the front indicator. Very easy.
If the right side needs bulb change in the future I'll use this method
So far I had to change only the left side fog light bulb. Before changing the bulb, I've searched from Xantia owner's manual some instructions
but in the bulb replacement section there were instructions for headlights and at the end of the page some ridiculous text like:
"Front fog lights - Contact nearest Citroen dealer. Bulb: H1"
So I tried to find out on my own how to do the job. First I used my camera to "see" the fog light assembly, connector and etc. I found these pictures in my "archive" and they were dated Dec 2007
