Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I think the Xantia was better around town and certainly fantastic for parking, much better than the C5.

Prefer the solidity of the C5 on the long run and motorways though.

C5 electrics much more reliable thus far

I know this problem well :evil:

I scrape all the corrosion off the surface of the wheel centre hole using a sharp knife, wire brush the hub to remove any dirt and corrosion and refit the wheel using just a smear of copper grease on the surface where the hub meets the wheel centre hole.

I know what you mean about copper grease but touch-wood,...

I was given a Xsara HDI Estate earlier this year, but was told that it was due for it's 80,000 mile service and had not had the cam belt changed in its lifetime. I've been using it regularly for many short journeys (pizza delivery) and it's now at 86,000 miles, I feel I really ought to get on and change the belt.

Hi chaps

I get lots of smoke on startup, which I am assuming is the valve seals as it quickly clears and runs ok on the move. Car is a '99 Xantia 2.0 16v auto Exclusive. I'm toying with attempting to change the valve seals with the head in situ - obviously I'll have to figure out some way of stopping the valves disappearing into the cylinders -...

Hadn't thought about the breather system - it's often the simple things you forget to check - I've had a quick scan this morning and there are definitely signs of oil in the induction system around the throttle housing, so I'll take the breather lines apart first and give them a good clean. I have a problem in my C5, sometimes, the engine fail to start, the starter motor operates normally but the engine refused to operate and there is ?engine immobilizer fault? message in the central screen.
After a few retries (I wait a few seconds between each retry) the engine start normally and I can drive the car without any problem.

Hello a little time back I asked about fuel consumption on my 2-1 td, it was not good and still isnt.. I read that one of the injectors has a wire coming from it and if it is disconnected then the engine would run rough etc. so I disconnected it and the result was that it made not a bit of difference, the engine management light does not light...

Does anyone have a diagram showing the route of the drive belt for a 1999 Xantia 2.0 HDi 110 with air con, or at least explain the route it should follow
The belt had snapped on my fathers on Sunday. He has got a new belt (length 1755) but I cant seem to get it to fit, whichever way I try it seems slightly short.

Any advice much appreciated....

Hiya, I'm still sorting bits on my Saxo 1.5D and came across something a bit wierd.

When I turn on the ignition and don't start the car, the glow plug unit switches off the glow plugs after ten seconds or so which is fine.
However, when I start the car from cold (which starts and runs fine) the glow plugs stay on for well over a couple of minutes...

Hi,

I have a Xantia (97 1.9TD) which takes a hell of a long time to start if you leave it for more than a couple of days without using it. It also takes a long time if its hot and you've left it for a while.

I have replaced the starter motor and the leakoff pipes so far and the problem is still there. It turns over a hell of a lot faster now but...

The fuel line runs from the grenade to the filter and then, from the top of the filter to a banjo union on top of the injection pump. It is in the vicinity of the throttle lever.

Sorry to multiple post on this but another thought has come to me.

If the engine did take a gulp and say, partially hydrolocked then the cambelt may well have jumped a tooth or two. These engines are very critical on timing and a check should be made of crank to cam to pump timing to eliminate it from enquiries.

Hi,

my C5 HDi 110 at its last MoT test got an advisory saying the n/s front anti-roll bar bush was worn.
Well, its nearly MoT time again and I was wondering if anybody can tell me whether this is likely to be an expensive job to get done?
If so I'll have to put it in for the test and see what happens.

Sounds more like a drop link.
They should be cheap enough to buy from GSF and are easy to fit.
But you may need a ball joint seperator to release the old one.
If you can get a look at a Haynes manual for a Xantia it will give you the details. It's the same droplink!

I came out to my xantia this morning and noticed that it had sunk slightly - not a great deal but enough for me to notice. Whenever you start it it always rises slightly anyway - any ideas?

I am attempting to find info on resetting the service interval and the service light, I entered reset c5 service light (without the speach marks)and it returned 1889 hits, but not one post had anything to with my request. Does this search option work if so what is the secret as there is no help and guidence. If not why is it there.

Citrojim has identified the above exhaust leak (thanks again Jim). Citroen and Euro Car Parts do a kit for just over £15+VAT whereas my local store offer the gasket and springs only for £7.

I prefer the lower price but would it be a false economy otherwise I may as well buy the genuine Citroen kit?

quite offen the exhaust shops use a cheap fibre conned sealing ring, which lasts about five minnuites, with the movment at the joint the fibre one breaks up, also its usualy the springs wich loose there tension that allows the joint to become loose

OK. It's a job I ought to be able to do myself fairly easily & quickly. However....

There's always a bloody however, isn't there. First off the dust covers have deteriorated to a what amounts to layer of rust over the pads. I removed these by basically ripping them off as there really wasn't much else I could do with them.

Thanks for the tip on Plusgas. A few applications of this. plenty of heat & the odd (ok, frequent & enjoyable) whack with the copperhead mallet to break the rust & the pins through the pads came out fine.

Surprisingly the calipers are working jus' fine, thank you, so no horror...

For a while I have had an intermittent cooling fan when aircon is running. Sometimes it runs, sometimes it does not, but a quick spin by hand will always get int running.

Anyway, a while back I obtained a new fan motor from ebay with the intention of swapping the suspect motor out. Today I decided to do this job, but hit a brick wall when trying...

Hi All,
Don't all faint. I have actually got the gearbox back in car - apart from the reason for this post, all back together.
Can anyone with a 16v Xant 2litre identify the 3 yellow wires hanging from just under the thermostat housing. ?? Obviously go to a fixing point somewhere around there---Are they earthng wires? I haven't put battery on yet...

hi all,

driving back from picking the car up, the bloody thing breaks down (i guess that is the XM initiation ceremony over and done with)...

anyway... i reckon it was fuelling, so off i went to the petrol station, i filled her up and we got home, thing is the gauge was showing some fuel before it broke down... so i'm wondering if it was picking...

I have a bad problem with oil in the radiator-in fact it is mostly oil! The engine oil leaks in to and pressurises the cooling system unless I run it really low. Performance is fine so where is the problem most likely to be?

The ideal solution is a proper replacement rather than a bridge of
the pipes;a good short term solution but they'll deteriorate with the

Hi,having removed an abs sensor from a breakers and then changing my duff one(NSF) I noticed the new one had a shorter spacer :? After a search in my shed I found that a rubber tap washer to be the correct thickness :o This is working,but can I regard it as a permanent fix :?:

I'd made a similar discovery with differing age sensors' spacers too.
It's down to the size of the CV knuckle increasing over the original
fitment. I made the space up with several metal washers with the fix
bearing up well a few years down the line so you should be OK
with yours.

I'm just not totally sure whether the rubber washer will be...

My dad just bought a 1998 xantia. Very cheap but very well looked after and with all the mod cons! Quite jealous as it reminds me of my old, now dead pug 405!

Anyway, it doesn't have any instruction books or manuals so can anyone offer any insights into its workings!

Having purchased a Towbar from a breakers i cannot work out how it fits. I suspect their are other parts from under the car that i haven't been sent!!!

I have a 'bulldog' towbar and was told it was off a 1994 Xantia. Mine is a 1996. It has 2 sets of electrics and looks fine.

However, its just a complete unit with 2 large bolts on a square...

Can anyone recommend a good detergent or other cleaning agent to remove the deposits that accumulate around the boot and filler cap area?

Neat washing up liquid doesn't work, nor does halfords car shampoo - even Gunk doesn't lift it off the bodywork.

Funny how these kitchen products don't do their intended job (at least not for me) yet will clean deposits it's not designed for. Cillit Bang works fantastically on getting the oil sooty deposits and other dirt off my car. It's great on the glass too - can see clearly at night now. Seems the log book is right - mine is white underneath! :D

Does anyone know how the 1.9TD Xantia back silencers differ between the hatchback and estate?

Looking on the internet, the obvious difference is the rear-most hanger, towards the middle on the hatchbacks, outermost on the estate. Other than that they look pretty similar - are there great differences?

I'm asking because the estate one is £50-plus...

I've just discovered where Citroen hid the removable loop bolt-on towing eye
bracket under the bonnet but can't see where it's supposed to thread in on
the front! Clever and neat and all that, it's taken me months to notice it!! :D

Maybe I AM blind, as I don't see any bumper plug/cover that would reveal
a mounting for it onto the front...

all, I have one, looks like a genuine part from Citroen! even has it's own plate with various numbers and so on... like a VIN plate.. and Citroen logo

anyway, is it fairly easy to install? I am not worried about doing the electrics, but will i need to drill holes in boot etc for the main mountings, or are they factory done?

You are right, I want is a choke warning light; i discovered my instrument panel have it on the left in the bottom of counter turns. I found in ungharian BX's site intructions for electric connections and bulbs.

My recent holiday trip to the West Country towing and taking day trips to Porlock and Lynton and Lynmouth has exposed a weakness in my TD clutch. It smelt terribly on the 1 in 4 hill between Lynmouth and Lynton :twisted:

Following on from the previous problems that I had before. When I come to start the engine there is not even a click from the starter solenoid. I have checked all the fuses, but could it be a relay? There is no voltage getting to the solenoid.

I sprayed come WD40 down where the key goes in and left for a few minutes, believe it or not it worked. The car will turn over but unfortunately, will not fire up. I still have got the problem with the pump. I will have to remove it and send it away for service/repair.

Replacing a driveshaft I notice that one of the gearbox to driveshaft oilseals looks like it is missing the outer seal. I can't get a picture off pr.net to see. Its letting me log in but not actually do anything and has been like this for a while.

Could anybody please go grab the page I need and put it here or send it to me.

just been to my local dealers to get a touch up stick of paint for my xantia
when i gave them the paint code ETWCR they said they only need the first 3 letters which equates to part number ZC9888015U mercury grey

what are the other letters for :? :?

Just doing the rear arm bearings on my Xantia, and wondered on peoples thoughts about what grease to use ? I have here both LS-EP 2 (general purpose lithium grease that I use for all sorts of things - yellow/brown colour) and LMS-EP 23 which is a similar lithium grease with 3% Molybdenum Disulphide. Thanks for your correspondence gents - the reason I believed my own car was'nt man enough to pull a 4/5 berth caravan was based on my last two annual holiday's to devon - with 4 (admittedly large) adults, a baby and some luggage in the boot I really had to make use of the lower gears and keep the turbo spinning, especially around Dartmoor.

Well as long as it's similar to my Xantia V6 then I won't complain, this one isn't making me bankrupt like my old BMW did. I would assume the 2.0i CT will have a slightly better MPG than the V6, and I will convert it to manual if the autobox fails or i get bored of it, this one i doubt i will sell, it's more of a classic than the xantia v6.

I suffer moderate spinal damage and certain work, even silly, easy jobs can leave me incapacitated sometimes for days on end.

At best, I may be able to do the job myself start to finish but for efficiency it would be great to have someone supervise and advise me and maybe do some or most of the work, depending on how far I get before the nagging...

Need to replace both the wheel bearing and the ABS sensor on the off side front wheel of my 1995 1.9TDSX Xantia.

I've looked on the GSF website, which is suggesting around £80 for both parts. Can anyone suggest any other suppliers for these parts (I'm in South Manchester), or are GSF likely to be the best?

I'm thinking of checking, and re-torquing if necessary, my head bolts and would be interested in experienced advice and comments as I hope to install a nos system adding appx 50bhp (for now).

Is it a wise thing to do or I am I risking anything or stretching the bolts that have covered 122K? Do I need any new gaskets or parts.

You'd love an Activa Mike but they can be (are) a money pit and will keep you fully occupied keeping it in good nick. If you do, be careful in buying one as they are complex, even by Xantia standards, and there are some really rough ones out there that would cost a fortune to get right. Imagine 10 new spheres, a new rad and a couple of new Activa...

Further to my previous post here I gave in and left the car doing what it wants, it did seem to work better when locked from the passenger side by the key and held in the lock position for 2 clicks.

Due to problems with our other car we are NOW going to be taking the car on holiday tomorrow and I need the car to lock properly. I don't have time...
