Fogs not working...

Post by vince »

Hi Guys,

My fogs decided not to work as of yesterday.

The car has been stood all week and the fogs definately worked when i parked it up.

I have replaced the 30a fuse in the engine bay compartment (No 6) and the switch does illuminate inside the car when pressed so i know thats getting power.

I havent checked the bulbs yet as i cannot understand why both bulbs would simultaneously blow unless they are wired in series and if one blows then the other would cease to function?....

Could it be anything else other than bulbs?

There's a relay in the engine compartment. Check it's clicking on.

Also there's the sub-harness connector plug clipped inside the front bumper, nearside trailing edge fairly close to the horns.

It's a yellow or green one; not sure where but look in the main underbonnet fusebox.

Vince, has the car got a tow bar fitted? If not ignore the following.

Quite a few years back whilst servicing a car, i was checking the lights and found that the rear fogs did not work. I did the obvious of checking the bulbs, power to the bulbs (none) fuse, switch and was realy puzzled as there was power to the switch, the switch was working fine, the bulbs were ok but there was no power to light them.

After several cups of tea and a packet of biccys, (this solves everything) I decided to check the trailer wiring as there is in the car socket a little pin that pushes in when the trailer socket is attached, the purpose of this pin is to disable the rear fog lamps on the car when the trailer is attached, this stops glare in the rear view mirror.

The pin was stuck in with all the muck that usualy gets in here and the foglights were in "trailer connected mode"

A quick clean up and all worked fine.

Now if I get a foglight problem and the car has a towbar, I allways check here first and several times since this event, I have found the problem in here.

If you dont have a towbar and socket fitted, then you will have to rely on someone with a bit more elecy knowledge than me.

Regards
Martin.

No Martin it hasnt but thanks for the info anyway.

Addo im sure ive seen a green relay in the box in the engine bay....does it control solely the front fogs?

I really need to check the switch also with a replacement one.

Can you substitute the front fog switch for the rear fog switch to test it?

The large top part is under the dash, and it looks like the three bottom parts are the metalwork of the fuse box in the engine room.
