decoding a registration plate number???

Unread post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Hi, does anyone know where I can look up number plate letters to find out where a vehicle was originally registered please?

reg docs just give you a date of first registration not the place, it would be nice to trace our citroen's back to which town or city they were registered at.

especially the GSA first registered in 1984.

regards Nigel.

Interestingly, the French have just, in the past year, adopted a new national numbering system, as against the department numbers that were allocated before. There are about 100 departments, allocated numbers alphabetically (except Paris regions).

The changes have been made despite widespread, almost complete, opposition. The old sysytem meant that 'foreign' (i.e. not local) vehicles stood out like a sore thumb and, (more important for rural folk) it meant cars from Paris could be 'dealt with' if they strayed from Paris.

When we moved here we asked a French person if he minded so many English living round here and he said - "it could be worse - you might have been from Paris!"

When they get a 'new style' number plate almost everybody opts to have the regional number put on, although it is rather tucked away on the right hand end.

I noticed that the registration locator lists " XB" as being used in London yet my 2nd car was a 1.8 litre Vauxhall Magnum registered SXB 399N which was locally registered in Coatbridge in Lanarkshire.

My 1st was 1.3 Mark 2 Cortina registered XVK 180H from the Newcastle area as I remeber checking it up in a book in the library not long after I bought the Car..... Feb 1977 when I'd passed my test :D

This will help you find the date when the car was manufactured, if you can find the RP or ORGA number
