Something scrubbing/rubbing my tyre sidewall

Post by AbangCorp »

All I can see is that when I got out of the car, the tyre is much2 higher as it should. No sign of non working height corrector. I dont know when it moves.

I am still guessing where does it rub?

I am really surprise by this phenomenon when I changed both front tyre. Sad, My right hand front got it also...

this happend after I discover my lh rear also showing this sidewall issue.. FYI, only these two tyres

Please help. Thanks.

The height will increase when you get out of the car and then drop back.

You rear sidewall wear could be due to failed rear arm bearings, look at your wheels from the back, are they leaning in at the top?

Sorry but your description is a little vague.

Do you mean your front tyres are being worn on the sidewall from something on the cars bodywork?

Im not sure how this could be, as the body work doesnt go near the outside tyre wall even in low. Or it something scrubbing the inside tyre wall?

The rears can wear on the body if the rear radious arm bearings are totally knackered, but its unlikely they will get to this stage without you noticing.

Are you keeping an eye on tyre pressures? If they are low they will be running on the widewalls?

Yup Peter, exactly. The other one seems to be more straight.
But that is only visible on the rear tyre. Do i need to have a check on the front too to come up with the conslusion.

My Lower Arm / wishbone round and press in (Rh Front) is due to change. Part is available, but I havent have a good time for that. Do you think this will be the reason?

Citroenmad, I take a good care on the tyre pressure. FYI, the front tyres is new, and torque to spec, and filled with air to the spec also 33psi

I would have thought that there was to much clearance on the front wheels for them to touch anything, is the wear on the outside or inside edges?

Hi AbangCorp, I guess this is caused by a failed rear radious arm bearing (as both Peter.N. and Citroenmad have told)
and/or at the same time you might have the "famous" white corrosion between the rear arm <--> rear brake caliper.
If you look at the rear tires from a distance they would look like this // ---- \\ :)
Failed bearing is noisy. For example while riding slowly over the speed bumps , you might hear a strange metallic sound (like hitting metal with a hammer) coming from rear.

Even if the rear tyres appear not to be in contact with the body, when cornering the wheels lean even more when the rear bearings have failed, meaning they can make contact with the body.

Sorry if ive missed it, but what car is this happening on? BX, Xantia?

I cant explain the wear on the front tyres though, as the bodywork never gets close to the outside of the front tyres even when in low. Unless you have a loose bit of wheel arch liner? Thats the only thing which crosses my mind.

Sounds obvious but someone else isnt using your car and constantly parking with the tyres rubbed against the curb are they?

Pictures might give us a better idea? Would you be able to put some on here?

In another thread I've asked the same question to him :? and suggested that he should include this information in his signature.
(Sorry AbangCorp I'm answering for this) He told us then that he has a MK1 Xantia 1.9TD.

haha, Im trying to fix it now so nobody will ever ask me again
hehe, sound like mad but also clumsy

I am busy on this forum again, as I am getting more confidence to repair on my own
Here, repair a xantia is only for enthusiast, zx is more popular ride
I am about to if everything is in order
moreover money get well invested if the car getting even reliable, bonus at the end of the year consent by my wife for this purpose

I only have one car, so i really need it to be as reliable as hell

Sadly, after sphere change. I asked my wife to sit at the rear, the suspension is super smooth on bumps & no said noise, noise inaudible (i guess, Its a women thinking)

Maybe I ask my wife to drive and me to hear this time round. Hope with the title as mercedes quality auditor, customer product audit is doing any good

Here is a picture, which shows:
1) the rear arm bearings (number 9, two of them)
2) possible corrosion (on surface C)

Defected bearings and/or corrosion might cause your rear wheel to be tilted inwards from top.

I hope this helps.
