Given the number of 'After-sales campaign' notices concerning Takarta Airbags I have been made aware of when looking up parts from PSA for members, I thought I would post a link to the following documentary that may be informative concerning the issue with these igniters.

According to Takata, the chemicals in the airbags’ explosive charge can...

This has caused some problems for organisations like ours and the Team are currently looking at the best way forward. This...

Hard Suspension

It sounds to me as though the car is riding low. I doubt it and if it did, it would only be until the cat choked up as this is one reason I have been given for failures of catalytic converters; oil contamination.
Another reason also given for not trying to tow start a car fitted with a cat is that the unburnt fuel & oil will cause its demise.

Its not a difficult job, all you have to do is pull the retaining bar out of the way, and with a little bit of very gentle twisting the centre just lifts out - hoses, filters and all. A while back I had unexplainable cold start problems, replaced the plugs, etc etc no help. Charged the battery, problem cured. 3-4 days later, problem back. Charge battery, problem cured, etc etc.
So, I'm guessing I need a new battery.
The battery on the car has a Cold Start performance of 270 amps - I asked for a battery for a Xantia TD and this...

if the rear wheels are just leaning inwards at the top and the suspension is making any dodge noises i would leave it alone. My 1995 zx is the same in terms the rear wheel leaning inwards at the top. Its common problem on zx/306/405/106/xantia etc.

Hello Dave,
I have a ZX Volcane TD and the rear radius arm bearings have failed for the second time, first time round i was scared off with horror stories regarding the fact that they would be impossible to remove, so i just replaced the rear subframe lock, stock and barrel from a breakers. Downside is that that has only lasted six months.

I don't know if the Xantia suffers from the same but BX rear disks had a tendancy to corrode...

When I apply the brakes for slowing from higher speeds, 80mph down to 30mph, the brakes work fine but they are accompanied by harsh grinding sound from about 60mph down until I release the brakes. Hi- I know this is a Citroen section, but the Peugeot forum seems a bit dead! I'm having a bit of a problem with my 1995 306
The car has started to wander a little at low speeds (ie less then 20mph) and I can hear a definite clunk from the front of the car. The steering wheel vibrates a little, and if I brake from say 40mph to a stop, there is a...

Spheres - 2 questions

by AndersDK » 15 May 2003, 21:15

Rory -
You're right assuming the sphere's life are time dependent, but not usage dependent. This is because the inherent N-gas/rubber membrane diffusion problem, which is independent of usage. Even new spheres on stock are slowly loosing the pressure because of this.
I'd say you replace the spheres which are flat. Do'nt go for all just to be sure...

Couple of questions
I have a 1998 Xantia 2.1D Exclusive with hydractive. (Replacement for the much loved BX) It feels to me as if it is ready for a new set of spheres not unexpected after 5 years and 120k miles. Looking through the service record it lools like only the accumulator has been changed.
So far I've spotted 7 spheres (4 strut, 1 rear...

Xantia Head Gasket - Can't remove turbo.

by Jon » 15 May 2003, 19:53

First post

No problem, last 2 1.9TD head jobs I've done (albeit on ZX's) I left the turbo bolted to the head, made sure everything else was undone, and 2 of us lifted the head off complete.
I assume the same applies to the Xantia as its the same engine.
You may have to move the engine forward a bit on the mounts to clear the bulkhead with the turbo though.

Hello all, me again.
Having great trouble accessing the two lower bolts which secure the turbo to the exhaust manifold .
The oil feed / return pipes, and the upper bolt are disconnected, as is the exhaust ( at the spring loaded bolts ), and the output pipe.
The problem is of physical access to the bolt heads,...

xsara radio antenna (+ mobile phone ??)

by AndersDK » 15 May 2003, 20:54

Fred -
In general any car radio antenna is solely optimised for radio reception.
Y's ago, it was common to mix 27MhzCB & radio on the same antenna, which worked fine.
Modern Cellular (mobile) phones employs way higher transmision frequencies, which prohibits satisfactory reception on cellular/radio mixed usage on same antenna.
Try shop around for...

Does anybody know if the antenna of a 2003 Xsara can be used for radio and
mobile phone reception ? And how do you connect it ? Is there something to
put between the antenna and the radio, because I didn't find a spare
connector, or is it simply impossible.
I would think it's possible because the antenna consists of the antenna and
then some kind...

Removing Front Grille on Xantia

by surfer » 15 May 2003, 12:35

First post

Don't drill them!
The black plastic fasteners in the top of the grille are push rivets.
The cetre pin can be levered upwards with a small screwdriver and then pulled out by hand. Or pliers if it really doesn't want to give. The other part of the fastener can be left in situ; there is no benefit to removing it.
You will find this a lot easier to do...

Removing Front Grille on Xantia
I have discovered the security-head screws behind the indicator light and inside the intake slots, but the Front Grille is still
captured at the top. In the vicinity of where the grille is captured, there are two black plastic circular things that look like the
head of a fastener, but if so, they are too clever by...

PERISHED FUEL PIPE

by JohnD » 16 May 2003, 00:03

First post

Yes! flexible hoses don't last for ever. A couple of years ago my daughter's 205D started loosing diesel through the hoses coming and going to the tank. In the garage I found a piece of caravanning gas tubing that fitted a treat. It lasted five months before it disintegrated. Obviously flexible gas tubing and diesel don't mix.

Last post

I noticed a few drip's under the car, gradually getting worse over a couple of days.Turned out to be the fuel return pipe, from the pump to bulkhead, it only leaked after initial start up (observation). Check the U section just behind the engine. Replaced with a 1 meter length of 8mm bore tubing from Halfirds with clips for under a fiver.

Xantia fuel leak.

by AndersDK » 15 May 2003, 01:19

Homer -
Most BX'es (millions) uses plastic tanks - never heard of a crack.
But a common problem is the approx 1 dia. vent hose found somehwere on the top edge/side of the tank. The hose in some cases works more or less off the stud, or the hoseclamp simply loose fit. Rarely the rubber hose is cracked or rotten.
Guess this could happen also to...

Last post

I have a slight fuel leak from the tank on my late '98 model Xantia estate. Only noticable when the tank is full and the car left standing for a few hours.
Initially I thought it was the joints on the rubber pipe between the filler and tank but it is coming from elsewhere and running onto these joints.
It also sometimes runs down the rear of the...

2.1 Turbo Diesel engine

by RichardW » 14 May 2003, 13:55

First post

The 2.1 td is based on the good XUD block, but has a 12v head. AFAIK it uses a different gear box (cable operated) and clutch (hydraulic), it has elecronic control of the inection pump, and it is a very tight fit in the engine bay. It is normally tuned to 110 BHP, so you could expect to get about 130 - 135 by tuning it - 170 would require some...

Last post

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me if the later 2.1 engines found in the late xantias, 605, etc will retrofit into an earlier model? I am assuming that everything is the same on them bar the internals? Or is it a completely different setup? Can they be run from the older ECU?
I see that some of these 2.1 engines have up to 170bhp. I am...

ZX sunroof

Does the sunroof mechanism have a means to disengage the normal electric drive and operate it manually with an allen key? Some Citroen models do (BX). I've got a 84k PDF file of the Xantia brochure from 2000, which I downloaded from the Citroen UK website at the time, if your interested ?
It won't cover the 1.9TD though, it had been replaced by the HDi for a while by that stage, but it does detail the later SX equipment.
