ZX Rear Brake Drums

Unread post by Thompatruck »

Having never had the pleasure of removing brake drums I need a hand.
I've removed the wheel and cap, and now the problem starts, it looks like the last mechanic attacked what i'm looking at with a chainsaw, the haynes is talking about tapping "the staking securing the hub retaining nut to the groove in the stub axle" which doesn't really help![?]
Am I right in assuming that means, smacking the first piece so the gr[?]oove lines up with the centre groove? if so is it clockwise or anti-clockwise because I have two outer grooves? And where do I go after that?
All help appreciated![:D][:D]

hm... sounds like the Haynes is making a simple job sound complicated.
Theres a little slot in the stub axle, and when the nut is done up, part of the nut is "peened over" into this slot so that the nut can't wind itself undone.
Thats all well and good if the last person that was there used a new hub nut and carefully peened it over into the slot, however if the nuts been used more than once it probably looks like a bit of a mess.
The best plan is to find the slot in the stub axle, and using a chisel tap the edge of the nut out of the slot so that you can then get your socket onto the hubnut and undo it.
Then go and purchase 2 new hubnuts ready for re-assembly.
