Xantia squeaking suspension

Post by Tony589 »

Hello, I am getting a noise from the rear suspension when I go over speed bumps etc. It souds like a squeak or creak.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Tony.

Does the car creak at the back when you raise and lower the suspension? If so the chances are its the rear trailing arm bearings. These are a common problem and you can replace them yourself.
Just a thought - try removing the rear hubcaps and see if that makes any difference.

As Jeremy said - it could be the trailing arm bearings. Put the suspension high, stand back, at the rear of the car and see if the wheels look anything like this: /-----\

The wheels look OK. When listening with the windows open the noise sounds more metalic, like the exhaust knocking, but I have had it up on a ramp and the exhaust is clear of everything.
Any more ideas?
Regards,
Tony.

Some ideas:-
Hubcaps - take them off!
Loose brake backplates / calipers
anti-roll bar fixings
subframe mounts
spare wheel holder/ jack box if you hav one
tailgate catch adjustment
rear bumper.
or the usual Citroen rule - look at the other end!

Thanks for the ideas, There is plenty to be going at.
By hub-caps do you mean the plastic wheel trims?
Look at the other end, now thats something I hadn't thought of.
I'll get under again next week and check some more.
Thanks.
Tony.

yes - the plastic wheel trims. Those on my Bx rattle very well and have caused me some concern until realised what ws going on. Tends to be a noise at wheel speed - which becomes more noticeable with the window open.
Ypu can check the tailgate by grabbing it and pulling and pushing it while its latched shut. It'll probably seem slack as the seal has compressed over the years. You may be able to move the catch to compensate.

I get the creaking sound going over speed ramps (I have to negotiate 7 just to leave the estate) and when raising suspension. My wheels are not / \ like, but normal. Is it something I should be worried about or should I just leave it?

I had the same last year on my BX - rear arm bearings had gone but I caught them before they did any damage to the arm and before there was any slack or change in the wheel angles. Mine were noticeable when I raised and lowered the car as well.

Thanks for the ideas folks, I have just had it repaired, it was indeed the N/S trailing arm bearing.
Thanks again,
Tony.
