Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can tell me if the later 2.1 engines found in the late xantias, 605, etc will retrofit into an earlier model? I am assuming that everything is the same on them bar the internals? Or is it a completely different setup? Can they be run from the older ECU?
I see that some of these 2.1 engines have up to 170bhp. I am looking for a good powerplant to put into a 405 estate for towing, and thought that it would be a good idea to try one of these engines.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

The 2.1 td is based on the good XUD block, but has a 12v head. AFAIK it uses a different gear box (cable operated) and clutch (hydraulic), it has elecronic control of the inection pump, and it is a very tight fit in the engine bay. It is normally tuned to 110 BHP, so you could expect to get about 130 - 135 by tuning it - 170 would require some heavy duty engine work I would think. It will fit, but it will be a pain - better just to go and find a car that had it factory fitted - or even better find an HDi 110, and have it rechipped to 135 bhp.

The standard output of the TD12 is 110 hp, both in old (mechnical) and new (electronic) forms. The difference is that pre -94 engines had Bosch mechanical injection pumps (very reliable, but difficult to tune) while the more modern version has a Lucas/rotodiesel electronic injection pump (not nearly as reliable but much easier to tune - just change the chip). In addition the Lucas pump uses different injectors, but thats about it. If the car you are thinking about had an old engine then a new one will also fit. If you want to keep the electronic fuel injection you will need all the electronic boxes that came with it. Otherwise you can fit all your old gear onto the new engine - but make sure you get the pump timing right!

Thanks for the replys guys.
I did think that 170 was a misprint, i found that figure on parkers whilst doing a search on the 605. Here is the performance and consumption table from that search
Performance & Consumption Cyl / CC BHP MPH 0-60 MPG
Peugeot 2.0i 4/1998 122 124 10.7 29.5
Peugeot 2.0i Turbo 4/1998 145 132 10.2 29.2
Peugeot 2.1 Diesel Turbo 4/2088 170 119 11.3 41.9
Peugeot 3.0 V6 V6/2975 170 133 10.1 25.8
Peugeot 3.0-24 V6/2975 200 146 8.1 24.4
So, as far as i can tell from the reply, if the replacement engine is to be tuned, i will nedd a post 94 spec one for the electronic diesel pump? Then it can be chipped?
Thanks again
