Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Backed off my drive this morning and when I started to move forward there was a horrible grating sound. Got out to see if anything had dropped off the underside and was catching but couldn't see anything. Gently pulled in to the side of the road. Believe me, its far from just PSA cars that suffer from this failing. I've had it happen on Audi 80's, 100's and most recently on my daughters Renault Megan (where it did about the same amount of damage to the tyre). The important thing is to replace BOTH sides even if the other side seems OK.

My Xantia is now making a creaking noise that I cannot locate.

The noise is only present when moving the steering wheel, and it seems to come from the engine bay. It is more noticeable when the car is parked with a warm engine for a few minutes, and then driven again. For example, I start the car in the morning, cold engine, hardly any creaking...

maybe its the pump belt, i dont think the items you mention would create a differnt noise with hot or cold engine, the other thing which could change the noise it make is possibly front struts if they are tight

I think I have a good idea whats going on here but some other points of view would be fairly helpful.

When I got my car 5 months ago I replaced almost every component which I thought could possibly be worn out but I've had a bit of an ongoing problem.

The steering wheel was about 10deg clockwise from center when the car was going straight ahead....

N/S took 15 mins and was easy
O/S took about a week and wasn't quite so easy.

First thing to go wrong was that I Couldn't seperate the strut from the strut top, cue hammer.

The ZX's central locking doesn't work. I checked the fuse and looked for any obvious signs of wire breaks, but have come to the conclusion that I need to check the relay/control module. I thought I knew where it was (according to the Haynes!) but in it's place is the sensor for the seat belt pre-tensioners.

Thinking about it, I seem to recall that it's screwed to the back of the panel, with the screw head on the front. So if you look for a screw (or maybe two) just above the fuse box opening (with the cover removed) you'll locate it.

Hi there,
I have a 99 sxtd xantia, automatic trans., in the last 2 weeks i went 5 times to the garage to try and fix some problems i have, they didn't do so well.
It seems like the load lever sensor (TPS?) is not good and it causes he car to loose it's pedal adjustments every few days.

It's not 'load level sensor', it's 'load leve r sensor'.

It is a sensor on the (bosch) diesel pump, that is connected to the gas (diesel) lever and sends the gearbox instructions when to shift gears.
Yes it's AL4 gear.

I went to the dealer, he is the one that 'fixed' the problem 3 times already, i believe i need a new sensor like that and the...

viewed a 93,000miles, 1.8 16v, 1999 xantia auto in nice condition overall, and never owned an auto car i have always been told to stay away. But for £700 is seems fairly good value considering its condition and new mot

1) What is the members’ views on the xantia autobox?
2) Is it reliable?

I should add that the gearbox in my xantia v6 did the emergency mode a few times too, and switching the engine off, taking the key out and start all over cured it till next time, weeks or months rather than days.

The gearbox on my car DID have a dipstick, and a top-up hole, and obviously a drain hole, so...

Well today had my service from Citroen in Doncaster and got the advertised rate of £30 for oil and filter change :D

This is on their express service scheme as i found some old leaflets that advertised it for the 1.9td so i was very happy :)

Got a small list of things they didnt like about the car but ho hum ill post that later on :)

This is the way to go... in my case 2.1V more at the bulbs. You can always add funny bulbs later. Above all note that the power source is from the alternator, NOT the battery, which under normal running is the power source:

My clutch is almost dead.. very springy now, and all the action is in the first 2 cm or less of pedal..

I still have an annoying oil leak, and have changed rocker gasket.. so I can only think its the HG.. its all up the back of engine, manifold high..

After recently doing a clutch and removing the gearbox (Job stalled due to an me being firmly out of action with an upper back injury :twisted:) I'd lift the lot out.

After all the work to remove a gearbox, so little else needs to be done to lift the engine so it would be a shame not to. An engine out on the floor is a joy to work on...

Although the diesel is more thermally efficient than the petrol driven sensibly, if a diesel is thrashed it starts to run very inefficiently and produces more heat than a petrol engine. Hence the precautionary need for a larger radiator.

why is it some BXs/XANTS wont start unless you let the glow plug light go out evedry time you try to start the car, my own cars have never suffered this prob, but i have two or three customers that do

Auxiliary belt snapped yesterday on my activa , got a new belt .
What do you all reckon a fair price is for getting it fitted?

Also , does any of you know of a decent garage or chap in the salisbury area who could do it for me as im new to the area.

I suppose that engine has a lot of space. I spent nearly 3 hours replacing my ZX's. Problem was that the new belt wouln't fit between the tensioner and the alternator and crank pulleys. Eventually, I pulled the tensioner so there was enough clearence.

A minor leak from the fuel pump, leak-off pipe and pinion valve have all been tolerated but I'm now paying the price. I noticed wet oil on my upper engine mount bracket and wondering how it got there have come to the conclusion that oil is getting a free ride on the cambelt somewhere around the lower pulleys :(

I assume this will attack the belt...

I have always used Morris' oils on my cars (seem good value + spec, local parts shop keep a good range), but I am struggling to find the equivalent to the recommended Total Quartz 9000 for the C5.

Is it a PITA job to do as i notice that the bearings themselves are about £15 from GSF so i was wondering how long it would take a garage to do the job??

About a ton. You could make it cheaper by striping the hub off youself and just getting them to change the bearing, but with a 4-post lift and windy gun they will have the hub off in about 10 minutes....

well my xantia is finally all ok again :) new leather seats in, front end completely repaired..

filters all changed

and cambelt and ABS still on agenda asap..

but, can i start her up on 100% ?? not a chance.. 5 glow plug goes, 6 attempts with starter to get an idle, finally it will catch and I can rev it to subdue the huge clouds / put up with...

Everyday generally it starts on the button no smoke, if I have already used it that day, no matter how long it's been sat.

Some mornings its fine, and some its not - today for instance it was impossible, temp around 6C but maybe overnight it...

Hi All,
I will be replacing the cambelt on the Mrs's Xsara 1.4 soon as the car has 48,000 miles on it. I'm not sure what the service intervals for the belt on this engine are but I always like to air on the side of caution & change cambelts early.

That said I have noticed that the engine seems to have an oil leak which seems to be coming from...

Hi guys

I'm having some minor issues on my ZX. Idle stays a little high and then drops to normal after deccelerating. This doesn't happen all the time but I suspect the idle step motor is going bad.

Also the throttle response is not as good in traffic. I have to be extra gentle on the throttle or the car literaly jumps.So I suspect the throttle...

Hi guys,

I just want to know how would you guys adjust the idle screw on the bosch ve pump? The screw is quite well hidden behind the pump with a nut locking the screw, what I've done for the time being is move the linkage nut up on the cable holder.

By the way... that main adjustment... the screw with the locking ring on.... I got the ring off,...

I was doing a bit of browsing tonight and found this web site which does a peel and stick chrome trim on a roll that may be suitable for replacing the tarnished chrome inserts on the doors and bumbers of your Xantia.

It' comes in various sizes of width and length so there is bound to be one that fits, hope you find the link below...

Anyone know what speed rating the tyres on my xantia estate should be? Mitchilins website states that the std homologated tyre is T rated (118 mph) ts website reckons they should be H rated (130mph) the ones currently fitted are H

I'm looking at putting 4 mitchelin energy tyres on and the price difference between the speed ratings is £13 per tyre...

Hello all, I've got a couple of quick questions regarding servicing a Xantia 2.1 TD.

Can the sump plug washer be re-used or is it one of those crush washers? (I'd rather know this now than get half way through and realise I need a washer afterall...which I've done before lol)

What is the best oil for these engines? (mine's on 104k btw)

I had a 2.1 from new and it came with a crush washer fitted. Since all four of our cars use 14mm plugs, I buy them half a dozen at a time and use a new one each oil change.

Hi, i just found two ZX's seats from a ZX Volcane and i want to fit its on my
95' ZX 1400 Avantage break. Volcane's drive seat isn't in excellent conditions, and so i would swap passenger and drive seats. Can i do it?
Or i must repair Volcane's seat and than fit on my Avantage?

I think they will swap ok, but-- Make sure you undo the rear bolts first. I had a front one jam when the plastic bit came out of the floor with the bolt, and then found I was unable to slide the seat forward far enough to get at the rear bolts! :oops:

Hi,
Can anyone help?
My brother in law has a Xantia 1.9 TD and just recently the fuel guage has started reading empty when there is plenty of fuel in it,the fuel low light even comes on,now i think its poss a knackered sender,has anyone had a similar problem?

Solved the problem!,
This is weird!!!!
Took the Sender out and as we tipped the diesel out of it a Slug came out!! yeah thats right a homeless Snail!
Put it all back together(minus the Slug)and it works fine.Very very strange,cant explain where it came from. :D

Hi guys. I have a 94L 2.0i 8v Xantia with a more than likely blown head gasket. Symptoms are creamy gunge all down the dipstick and in the last week it has drunk all the water - I've also noticed a lot of steam coming from the exhaust for the first ten minutes in the mornings over the last month or so which I mistakenly put down to the cold...

I see your point though, even just for bits, you will be forking out nearly as much as you paid for the car. To repair depends on general condition, how much residual MOT and so on.

My MOT expires 12th March and I notice it's possible to have it tested one calendar month in advance and, if it passes, the new MOT will not begin until the current MOT expiry date.

the car has to be re/presented by the end of 10 working days not including bank holls and weekends,

if it is they only have to check the items it failled on, pluss the garage i use just check all the lights are still working,

but as i said earlyer if the car has done a high amount of miles between the faliure and re/test they can do a full MOT...

I need to replace the drop links on the old gal as the rattling is getting on my nerves. I note that GSF list two parts, N42265 and N42265A, the first being half the price of the other. Upon refelection it may be that one type has 90º at BOTH ends.... I have an XUD Xantia Estate MK1(?) and an HDi (MK2).

ONE has 90º on one end of the droplinks, and the other straight! I had it arse end around - sorry!

For information:-

Just changed the four suspension spheres on my Xantia, no problems despite a 194,000 miles car.
Got the tool off eBay from a guy in N.Yorks, £9.99 incl postage, reckon he knocks them out himself.
The tip about cracking the spheres eighth of a turn with the suspension on full height is the way to go.

I'm planning on changing my cambet and aux belt over the weekend as I'm not sure if the previous owner had them changed and the cars done 90k now.

Just trying to get together a list of part I need to buy. Obvously I need the belts, the bol recomends I need to change the water pump at the same time but what else should I change? Do I need to chang...

Remember the coolant to go with the water pump.
Also the aux belt tensioner sometimes needs replacing, not done myself but be aware it does fail. Someone whos been down there will elaborate.
Let us know how it goes, I gotta do a cambelt and water pump on mine soon.

In a recent pothole damage incident, I chinned my n/s front alloy rim and I've just realised my front o/s coil has snapped .
It didn't sit lurched over or anything, I just noticed when coming down off speedbumps there was a grating noise.

Anyway, my local carparts place wany £49 quid a spring but a) I'm skint and b) I wouldn't be sure whether...

I had to replace a spring on my Xsara for the MOT last year. I hadn't even noticed it had broken to be honest, a few inches from the very top had gone, but enough for the tester to fail it.
I replaced just the one and haven't had any problems, as far as I can tell it handles exactly as it did before the original spring broke.

On Saturday, after bleeding my Activa Brakes, I was left with a rather a lot of very clean waste LHM. It seemd a shame to just throw it in the waste oil container I keep in a corner of the garage so I kept it in a jar.

I did wonder about filtering it and reusing it as it is very clean, only having been changed recently after a Hydraflush. Is this...

Folks

C4 passenger window - the rubber door to window seal keeps coming adrift. At some time in the past someone tried to pinch (steal) it. No matter how hard I squeeze it back it still starts to come adrift.

Is there some magic glue/sealant I could use?

Hi
Can anyone tell me if replacement of Xantia hand brake cables is a viable DIY job or is it best left to professionals? My nearside one is partially seized and not allowing the handbrake to release properly. I suspect the O/S one will be almost as bad.

My diesel pump has started to leak around the throttle shaft. Ive located an injection specialist who can fix it but I need to remove the pump. Removal shouldnt present too many problems, however I'm concerned about re-timing the pump on re-assembly. Most of the timing kits cost around £100-£150, so not cheap.

I have a water leak on my cylinder head and just wondering how much of a job its goin to be to fix it.

It appears to be coming from some sort of hole/indent between spark plug 1 and 2 or 3 and 4 depending which way they are numbered.

I had trouble starting it last night but got it going eventually. i've done about 60 miles today on motorway and...

Ok. I've fitted the new core plugs and changed the coolant etc and the leaking head seams to be cured but it's still running rough when the engine gets warm.
It seems to pull ok when its cold but once its warmed up (75degrees) it still seems to be miss firing when I put my foot down. It'll cough and splutter for a few secconds and then pull ok....

Sorry if this is a bit vague, but my 1998 Xsara has suddenly developed a creaking/scraping noise, especially when moving off in 1st gear, but not in reverse. Once up to speed there is still some noise, but not so much. It is worse when going up hill. It seems to be more from the NS front of the car. Have just han NS lower wishbone bushes replaced...

Hi,
My son locked the brakes and took my Xantia up a grass verge at a reasonable speed, offside wheel first.

The o/s wishbone appears to have bent as there is limited clearance between tyre and rear of wheel arch. The result is that the tracking appears to be towing-in.

Has anyone had similar suspension damage? Can this wishbone be bent without...

would it be possible to have either a seperate subsection of the forum for veggy users or a posted sticky about the do's and dont's.... particularly the different effects veggy with have on bosch pumps, lucas pumps and HDI's?

lots more people are trying veggy and it would help give them a good steer on the risks

I think this would be a very good idea although if this does happen, we'd need a Renault specialist to advise on running various DERV Renaults on veg although being French I guess they too use either Bosch or RotoDiesel (Lucas) pumps and the general principles we know so well for PSA vehicles apply equally.

I'd say create the sub-forum and move...

Hi, I have read through alot of the post's regarding the heater fan.
Now mine works intermitantly, when it stops working if you give the underside of the glovebox a kick it starts workin again. Is this down to needing the relay mod, or is it the transistors in the fan, or even the heater temp resistor?

Also I have replaced the auxaliry belt but...

The usual cause of this problem is the high current connections to the motor and motor speed regulator module making a poor contact. They carry upwards of 30A when the fan is running full-tilt and like much of Citroen electrics, they're not really up to the job.

Have a look at the connections and clean and tighten them. The thick red and black...

As the find activity is US, I am asking for some help to improve the lighting on our 2 Xantias - a MK1, and a MK2.

Apart from the Phillips Vision Plus (and other) bulbs, I have checked the voltage at the bulbs with engine running, and with battery showing 14.2V, I am getting 12.62V at the bulbs... is it worth installing a couple of relays - 1...

Autocar have had a first drive of the new C5 - looks promising. It's described as essentialy a short wheelbase C6, with many components in common with it, the Pug 407 and old C5.

They're expecting 50% to be sold with steel suspension, the rest with Hydractive 3+. i.e. it looks like all the hydropneumatics will have switchable suspension, which...

at speed the C5 has that unflustered, floating-on-fluid feel that is unique to Citroen. At low speeds its ride is more supple than the C6’s
