Xantia Diesels - How to kill the ABS ECU.

Unread post by xmexclusive »

Just came across a Citroen fault note concerning ABS fitted Xantia diesels.
If you have to remove the instrument panel it is important not to operate the ignition switch while the instrument panel is disconnected. Turning the ignition switch in this state will cause the injection pump shut-off solenoid to generate an induced voltage. This induced voltage then fries a component in the ABS ECU. With this fault present the ABS warning lamp and the battery charge warning lamp will remain lit. The engine will also continue to run when the ignition is switched off.
To avoid this problem during maintenance disconnect the ABS ECU as well as the instrument panel before using the ignition switch.
Sorry if this has already been covered, just let me know and I will stop posting the odds and ends I come across.

That's a good tip if its true :)

By the sounds of it the back voltage induced when the field collapsed (same way an electromagnet works) , there "ought" to be a diode in the line to prevent that, almost seems like a design issue really...

John, these "odds and ends" as you describe them are very interesting and valuable so keep posting them!

I've run both a 2.1TD and an Activa with the instrument cluster removed with no adverse effects so I guess this applies to the 1.9TD with the fully mechanical pump.

Hi Jim

Should have given the reference.
Citroen Info-rapid Xantia 1 no. 25 dated 5 April 1994.

The Xantia 1 info-rapids that I have start at no. 1 (18/5/93) through to no. 109 (9/4/01).
Headed as no. 1 means engine information.
In the same series:
no. 2 covers gearbox information (2-28).
no. 3 suspension information (1-17).
no. 4 power steering (1-4).
no. 5 brakes (1-12).
no. 6 hydraulic supply (1-12).
no. 7 bodywork (1-13).
no. 8 internal fittings and services (1-48).
no. 9 accessories (1-39).

No time spare to list them all but as an example that final one;
Xantia 9 no.39 (29/12/00) covers Horn failure on phase 2, the cure being fit 1.5mm spacers between the airbag module and the radio controls to eliminate interference.

Thats rather interesting...

Im just sitting here trying to think if I have ever done it.. but cant recall if I have..

I have on a 1994 VSX breaker up the top, theres no clocks or anything, but it still starts and drives.. however, the ABS was not working because two sensors were faulty..
Theres no point putting the instruments back in because the ABS light is already lit, or removed...

I finally decided to do something about my ABS .. the charge and the ABS lights have been on (and off) together since before I owned the car.. I thought someone had cross wired them .. this is very useful John.. so I guess I need an ABS ECU ... then some sensors I should think
