Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I have a 95 Xantia SXwith a PH/1C radio. Does anybody know if the bulb on the lcd radio display can be changed and how to do it as it has blown. All the other lights are fine on the radio. Any help would be great thanks.

They'll probably be tiny surface mounted bulbs... If you're handy with a soldering iron and have a steady hand you could give it a bash, but I'd say paying someone to do it would be more than the radio is worth.

They're plentiful and cheap on ebay so I personally wouldn't bother repairing (or paying to get a screen on one repaired) unless I was...

Can't belive that my 'new' Xantia still appears to have 2 of it's original 'Energy' tyres on after 98,500 , but they are getting a bit near 'the bone' now tbh.
Is there any positive proof to back up the claim that they give better fuel consumption, and therefore stump up the extra cost for another pair, and p'raps buy 2 for the front too, or go...

Well, I've just had all four tyres replaced on the ZX with Goodyears for 40 quid a corner, which sounded quite good to me. I used to have a 5 series BMW, for which I paid a 100 quid a corner the last time I bought tyres for it.

The same place quoted 30 quid for a budget tyre, but the thing had budget tyres on when I bought it and they were lethal...

Hi - Could someone please tell me what type of alternator I have in my 'P' Reg Xantia SX 1.9TD Estate, as the details have worn off the identification plate.

I believe it may be a certain type and Amp?, and I guess that all models the same as mine would have the same alternator?

So i need to know if it would be a 75 Amp, 100 Amp etc.

I have had a neighbur check the voltage getting to the battery and he said it was almost non existant. (Main dealer BMW mechanic)

So I will try the hammer if no joy look toward either the Diode or just taking the old one off and taking it with me to find a replacement.

Hi,

I have a 1997 Series 1 2.1 TD SX non-hydroactive, and recently my rear won't rise, and is sat on the bump stops. The front seems to rise fine. Prior to this the rear suspension would drop on starting, then rise after 30 seconds or so. The ride has always been choppy and not up to scratch (I have owned the car for 9 months). The rear will rise...

Hey all. First problem with the new car :lol: The alarm wont switch off, or should that be it wont disconnect from the remote locking system.

Come out and unlock the car with the remote key, everythings fine. Open drivers door and alarm sounds off. Push disable switch on the dash and turn ignition on and it stops. Disconnect battery and then...

Result :D I have an alarm problem on my 2.1TD Craig and I found a loose plug on the ECU but alas, it did not fix mine :roll: Mine goes off about 10 minutes after it is set. Not found out why yet..

And on a double bonus the floopan is bone dry :D

Taking up to 15 seconds for the 'Stop' light to go out, and a further 15 seconds for the car to rise, after the car has been static for more than a couple of hours.

Hi all
The aux belt tensioner on my 1998 MK1 is fully adjusted but to me the belt feels a little on the loose side.its not that noticable as such but it just dont look right if that makes sense :oops: :oops:

It was only put on 2 months ago after the previous one snapped and took the cambelt with it so its not worn in that sense im just wondering...

From looking at pr.net, there seems to be four different belts, varying in length by up to 13mm. The length depends on whether a Sanden or Harrison AC compressor is fitted.

13mm would be enough of a difference to explain why yours is loose Colin and yours is tight John. I've the same issue on my 2.1TD. It's a little loose even on full...

ok guys, its a 96 VSX for anyone who missed the new car post earlier.
So its got the hydractive system.

I have driven it about 200 miles today with no strangeness.....well no more then normal :P

Anyway....i decided to do some Citaerobics to make sure all is as it should be........first couple of up and downs...no problemo, all smooth and...

I was discussing the horrendous swirl marks on the otherwise excellent Admiral blue Xantias paint work to a bloke in a bodyshop I know, and how to remove them.
I think the car must have been washed in a sandstorm at some time. :shock:
He threw a 1/4 full bottle of 3M hand glaze, and told me to try it.
Wash, polish and then wipe this liquid...

Problem is the glaze will only last a very short time. Depending on how bad the swirls are you need to either medium or ultra-fine cutters and cut the car using a rotary buffer (yeah the ones that'll burn the paint edges off if your not careful). Once you have removed the swirls, the 3M glaze will then make a dramatic difference. The new 3M glaze...

Doing my usual shop in Tesco last night & nearly had a canary when I saw the price of veg oil. Last week it was £1.67 for 3litres & last night it was £1.98!!

Is this a knock on from the Northern Rock? Wet summer? Disastrous England performances in cricket & rugby (had to get that in somewhere, arf, arf)?

I've got a Synergie 1.9 Turbo Diesel and the MOT is due next month.

The problem is I get a lot of black smoke from the exhaust above about 3,000 rpm and I'm worried about it failing becasue of that.

A few months back I was having problems accelerating, no power at all to speak of under 2,000 rpm and flat spots between 2,800 and 3,500 rpm. Plus I...

I am dubious about putting it neat into the filter. These treatments are very strong solvents and may have an affect on any rubber in IP.

The Millers diesel treatment I use is absolutely stinkingly strong and volatile. If it gets flushed with diesel a minute after it may be ok.......not sure myself.

I guess your smart new Xantia had the horrid Alcantara interior as my estate did. It looks great when new but can wear out before your very eyes whereas the interior you have in now lasts for ever.

Hi all,

Having got an advisory on the front brake balance for the ZX at the last MOT, I decided to tackle the problem today - day off - no rain!

The bottom sliding pin had siezed on the N/S, so I cleaned it all up and re-asembled with copper grease.

I decided to check the O/S and the bottom pin was partially siezed, so sorted that as above....

I read on here somewhere that the floats get stuck in the glass guages...

Can they be freed off? I dont know if the LHM is overfilled or whether the guage is just stuck.

Also whilst im on.....the rev counter in mine doesnt work.....is the crank position sensor hard to change and is it a common fail or do they get earth problems anywhere....?

My old Xantia spent months stood on a driveway on quite a steep slope, and being a 93 model it sank down after a few hours = long periods with the float at the uppermost point due to the tank being full of fluid. A sharp (but light) tap with the car in high on level ground gave a true reading.

If your Xantia is used every day I would agree with...

really happy with this little Car excellent Fuel economy and with the IZUSU

Had the same thing on my C5 a few years back. I can confirm that it makes the climate control do some very strange things :shock:

The thermistor lives in the base of the N/S mirror. It's a bit of a PITA to get to, removing the mirror cover itself is best done on a warm day as the plastic is just that bit more flexible and the very fragile clips...

A neighbours son's Saxo arrived home this morning on the back of an AA wagon :(

As sure as night turns into day, it was not long before I was called in to cast a thought or two :roll:

good to hear its been resusatated, they arnt usualy a job to bleed, i never use the header tank method on any of the cit/pug engines, maybe your bleeding prob was due to the crap in the cooling system

Hi,My husband fitted a clutch to our Citroen Synergie 1.9TD ,1996,He now has a problem engaging 1st and reverse.
He did get a faulty release bearing with the kit so used the one he had but he didn't see a problem doing that as it looked in good condition.
The Clutch was done because of slipping.
Does anyone have any ideas why this should be?

I have just bought a 2001 2.0l HDi picasso but only got the spare key with it and not the remote key fob.

Ive looked on ebay to buy one but as I never had one to compare, I dont know which one I need to buy. What key fob was specific to the 2001 model. Also is it easy to program to the car or will I have to go to a dealer. They have already...

I don't know if this will be any help but I have just spotted this on anoether - ahem - Citroen forum.

Finally got a spare key for my C5 yesterday, cost £60 for key fob, £18
to obtain security barcode, and £16 to progrrame it to work with car.
All done by Eurocarcare in Derby - recommended.
Get yours done now before you lose your only key down...

Hi,

my '00 Activa badly creaks from the front, and it's got hard to bear. :( The noise mostly occurs when I drive slowly and accelerate or break. My wing mirror has been snapped off this evening , i keep a keen observation on my Activa , and happened to catch a thug load of youth's jump on the bonnet over the roof . The electric mirror's been snapped at the base/bracket and is now dangling by the wires .
Can anyone tell how i can get the colour coded shell open to disconnect the wiring...

i agree with most of what DickieG said, appart from the lugs which secure the coded cover, as i find if you are very carefull after dismantling the everything behinde the mirror glass, you can then gain access to the lugs from onside the shell, which you can eass out very gently

My xantia is using to much fuel, i had it on a cit diagnostic tool and came up with code no 31- this has about ten items which could be the fault- from ignition system to wiring to air filter and spark plugs (which I have changed recently- so these are ok). one of the other options was lambda sensor.

Hi, did a search and couldn't find what I needed. I believe that you can buy a steel version of the clutch clip that breaks on a Xantia pedal (I've seen it referred to as a Pingf**kit, because it goes ping and you say F**kit).

Can anyone please point me to where you can buy them in the UK? Thanks very much.

If my opinion counts working in the parts game, its always advisable to fit OE or OE standard equipment whenever you can afford to do so.

What you tend to find with cheaper makes is that you end up paying double in labour doing the job again in 6 to 12 months time so what you save in the cost of the part you fork out later anyway....

Not too sure if any of the Xantia's have one, but the LX....sorry, Forte... certainly doesn't. Is it possible to fit such an item to mine off a scrapper, as I find them a really great aid to more economical motoring.

I've just got a feeling this is going to be 'mission impossible'. :roll:

You need the dashboard computer AND :
1) the fuel flow meter
2) the speedometer signal
3) wiring

Then add 1ton of patience, ability to suppress aggro - and enjoy :D

Ive recently bought a 2003 Berlingo, which I need to fit a towbar to. The towbar isnt a problem, however I'm pondering how to do the electrics.
Options are

1 - Buy a Berlingo specific wiring harness, which just plugs in. This has the advantage of being easy to fit, and in theory shouldnt effect the existing wiring, but at £52 isnt cheap

The rear end on my Activa seems to bounce horribly.

I thought the car did it and a friend of mine confirmed it for me on Friday.

The Activa system seems to be working fine, with the engine running and pushing the car from the side there is no body roll all the flex is on the tyre side wall.

When driving along and you get to a bit of bump road...

...well it is to me anyway. Just got my Xantia yesterday....and mighty pleased with it so far.
Was contemplating fitting the bike rack bracket to the tow bar, and noticed this strange device that's already been fitted. It's a short spring on a bracket that's been fitted horizontally, and I haven't got the foggiest what it's for. :?

Years back I used to fit and wire towbars as a sideline. I used to offer the the brekaway cable anchorage as an option. They were good and much better than just looping the breakaway cable around the towball as most of us do. They were known as pigtails back then.

Its illegal to wrap the breakaway cable around the ball hitch these days...

Hi all,
I am getting slightly concerned about the low MPG I am getting from my xantia MK1 estate 2.1TD sx.
I am getting about 28 mpg around town which I dont mind too much as the what car magazine says it should return 30mpg but I was expecting to get much better results on a long run which I am not.

That is rather high. The 2.1 is reputedly more economical than the 2.0.
I'm not satisfied with my economy but I recently acheived 633 miles on a tankfull. It wasn't completely dry when I refilled, it had used 63L, within the constraints of filling accuracy.

Today i was at a gravel pit installing a CC and decided to use their weighbridge (after asking first!)

The book figure for most Xantia's is around 1300kg, which is hefty to say the least.

My car had a quarter of a tank of fuel, about 15kg of work's stuff inside but apart from that, is a typical example.

The bumper doesn’t necessarily have to come off, but it may still be the long, easiest way to do it.
Check that both fans easily turn by hand, then tap the motors to ‘reseat’ the brushes.

You can test both fans by shorting relay pins 30 to 87 on all 3 relay sockets at the same time, even with the key out.
They can also be tested by feeding them...

Hi,

I am have the usual tick indicator relay problem.

I can see the relay and will replace.

But I believe from other postings that the indicator stalk could be the problem. I took off the bottom steering column cowl, and loosen the top bit but the indicator stalk seemed to be a closed unit.

Any tips on how to get it out and clean it???

Thanks for the info.

I had visions of something like a table cloth thrown over the dash and obscuring the instruments.

I've probably just dropped myself in the proverbial by cleaning/polishing my formerly very dull dashboard with cabin cleaner.
Looks and smells quit spiffy but if the sun shines...

Get some panel wipe or some other mild...

Hi,

Im in the market to purchase a Xsara Picasso 2.0HDi.

Due to budget I was looking for one around 2000 - 2002.

Can you give me any advice on what too look for when purchasing one of these cars.

Ive read that they have issues with clutchs, suspension and a FAP filter.

Ok so i went up north and picked up a clean 96 Xantia VSX with service history, 2 owners from new and it runs superb with no rattles or other issues. the suspension also works perfectly :wink:

I'll post some pics up once its cleaned up and ready 8)

Just changed the pads on my 19TD Estate, all the pads except one were half down. The inboard pad on the near side was worn right down to the sensor triggering a brake service. i would suspect the caliper function on this side, but at the last brake service it was the outboard pad on the off side that had worn out quicker than the others, anyone...

you may find that the front caliper piston seals are swollen not allowing the pistion to release the pads after you release the brake pedal.
jack up the car and put the front on axle stands remove the road wheels and run the engine in 1st gear now check to see if both hubs are rotating at the same speed. DO NOT BRAKE AT THIS POINT IT WILL DAMAGE...

I have been wondering why my Turbo has been getting louder for a few days.. I put it down to having windows open with warmer weather and hearing it reflect from hedges etc

but tonight on way home i noticed my rear silencer has snapped off ;) rest of pipe is resting on the Rear AR bar, just

So what is 'normal healthy' suspension behaviour on the Xantai then?

Just been out for it's first longish run with the family for an aborted trip to the Tatton Park classic car show....bloody weather. Absolutely fuming, as it's a damned good show if the weather is fair to good, but hell in the mud. :x

Where is the thermoswitch for the cooling fan on my 99 activa?
I reckon its not working properly as when I did my usual Sunday evening stint in the traffic jam on the M6/M5 last night, the temperature guage went up, and up, and then the light came on, eventually the fan cut in and it just kept the temperature guage at the...

Would expect it to have two cooling fans, and the fault being that both fans don’t come on at low speed when the engine gets a bit hot.
Looks like only one fan comes on at high speed when the engine gets close to overheat.
Both fans always have to spin at the same speed.
The top right relay socket may be blackened.
One of the red fuses just behind...

Hi,

I have a Xsara 2.0 hdi (160k) on a T that keeps loosing power.

It goes allright for a while then the revs stop coming though. Getting up a hill is a challenge!

A mechanic had a quick look but I don't want to spend loads of money because it's a bit tatty and not worth a lot. He suggested it might be the front fuel pump (had the rear one...

Hi,
recently bought a 99 Activa, and am steadily coming to terms with what I have done!!
The radio is a standard fit clarion unit, with a cd stacker in the boot.
I have the code, but no idea of the sequence of inputing it.
I did try, and now, instead of 4 dashes across the radio screen, I have 4 dashes, with another 4 underneath!
I am wondering if...

Every time I try to stretch those ridiculously short elastic cords into the tailgate, the locating bars on the rear quarter housing lugs just pop out again.
Is there a known fix for this, and are their versions with the rear blind included readily available anywhere?

AS far as I'm aware the parcel shelf with blinds was only available on SX and upwards trim levels,

I've had two models with out blinds and never had any problems hooking them up, are you positive that they are located correctly in the holder.

Dunno. It's dark now, and neighbours walking past are giving me funny looks seeing an ejit messing...
