I doubt the piece of plastic holding the cable to the floor will cause an issue with the air bag light, but an intermittent loose connection in the plug and socket almost certainly will. Check for a good electrical connection within. Look...

The one I have is a load of html / gif / jpg files, with an exe front end.
As long as you find an index html type file, then you're away.
I found it quite useful when planning a job, because you get to know where things are routed / bolted - quite handy when you're working behind the engine ( for example ) by feel.

Im pretty sure that RF keys can be reprogramed to work another 406.
Also the RF keys can be programed to unlock the keypad for one minute.
The infra red system is very very easy to bypass & the whole 405 security system was a joke untill June 1995!

Does anyone know whether it is possible to swap the interior from a mk2 406 to a mk1 406. I prefer the squarer non-velour seats plus the rear cushion on the drivers seat seems a little too small for my taller frame! It's a 406 estate, by the way!!

Price is what I look for, the cheaper, the better. And as BP is always 3, 4, 5p per litre more expensive around here, then unfortunately no I don't use it. I saw BP at 86.9/litre last week and bought my diesel at Savacentre for 80.9/litre.

If in doubt about the cambelt then get it changed! peace of mind and better than it snapping and causing quite a mess! It is probably due for a change at around that mileage.
As to cold starting I'd bet one or more glow plugs is defective: change them all!

Usually when diesels stop while driving I suspect air in the fuel but obviously it could be a number of other things.
I had the same problem with my panel bulbs and it took me a while to sus it out. It turned out to be the panel light rheostat. Twiddled it a bit and it was fine!

Got 405 GLD 1991 H reg 1905 diesel.
1) The engine sometimes cuts out when I'm driving. If I dip the clutch and turn the starter it restarts as though nothing had happened. Any ideas?

According to my Peugeot parts catalogue, your axle should have 18.9mm torsion bars and a 19mm anti roll bar, this seems to be the same for all the 405's except for the 1.4, MI16 and those with Heavy Duty suspension (Whatever that is!).

Easiest thing would be to change the clutch....! I'm not sure the auto box would handle the torque of the TD engine, hence they never came from the factory for probably this reason.

rumbling from the front

My 106 has developed a speed dependant rumble, coming from the front. The rumble appears at about 30mph goes quiet again at higher speeds then reappears at about 60mph. I'm guessing this is either the wheel bearings or the driveshafts.

Looking from behind the car at a distance of around 10 - 15 feet, does the offending wheel appear to lean inwards to the top? If so the needle roller bearings in the suspension set up have failed due to old age.

Those temperatures are fine for a 405 SRI mate.
On the U.K. 405s Peugeot fitted blanking plates to the front grill, Removing them helps the airflow to the radiator, If these are fitted to cars in New Zealand try removing them to get more air to the radiator if your really worried.
To remove the grill you need to undo 2 x 10mm bolts, 1 in each top...

Is it just a Pug diesel thing? The 106 went through stages of squeeling, despite correct tension. The only way to shut it up was a new belt. Now today in the rain (wipers/blower/headlights etc), car drawing heavy current low and behold the 504 is at it! The same V pulley type belt too.

Hmmm, all sounds a bit suspicious.
First off, has the fuel filter been changed? All the diagnostics in the world won't help if the filter is blocked or full of water.
Try changing that first (even if it's relatively new) and examine the housing for leaks.

I'd suggest removing the plug on the bulb end, and checking with a multi meter there is voltage present. Dirty contacts may be the cause. If there is not power at the bulb end, you'll need to trace it backwards to find the break.

It's possible. Calipers are designed to work with a certain servo/pump & master cylinder combination. Bigger calipers often mean bigger (or more) pistons means a larger displacement of fluid is required and the 306td might not be up to it.

Anyway when the engine is off the brakes are pretty much solid as you would expect but as soon as the engine is running the brake pedal travels almost to the floor. I have bled it several times using a pressurised kit and theres definatley no leaks or air...

Yes they have to be filled in a certain way i'm afraid. It involves the use of a header tank added to the expansion tank to bring the level of the coolant above the level of the highest hose.

Yes its a straight swop but you MUST, I repeat MUST use the alloy wheel bolts on the alloy wheels.
The steel bolts for the steel wheels have a taper end, The alloy bolts have a flat washer under the head.
Also if you keep the steel spare wheel, Keep 4 of the steel bolts in the car to use if you get a puntcher.

Take your radio out, and write down the long code thats etched into the side of your radio, call peugeot where the car was bought from, and if the car is less than 5 years old, they will have code on their system and supply it to you for free, if its over 5 years old, they charge £25 to search their database but will find it for you within a day....

you need at least 170bars of fuel pressure to start an HDi,if you are not getting this it wont even think about starting,there is a few things that could cause this but it may be a stuck injector(returning fuel straight back to the tank)& not allowing pressure to build up.

There should be one from the negative battery terminal to the gearbox, and one from the negative terminal to the body, possibly bolted to the nearside wing.
Don't be fooled if they don't look like 'straps', they're probably insulated cables.

Diff oil seals. Easy to replace. After taking out the drive shfts just pull them out and replace with new. Sorry that's if its a Cit ZX etc. You'll need new gear box oil and GSF's stuff is OK. You can get them from any bearing factors. I found that I needed the crank oil seal for my Xsara and it cost only 76p from the main Citroen delaer so give...

Nope, All the part numbers are different mate.
Bonnet, Slam panel, Front wings are all different.
You could see if you could get the lights to fit with the newer style
grill, But I doubt it.

I have just had the great displeasure of replacing the bushes on both sides of a customers 1998 406 Turbo Derv. Both ball joints have also been replaced....screw in type. Could I find the correct socket for the ball joints? NO!!!! Bought Sealey SX027 after my local motorfactors told me it would fit....it's actually for a 405 and did not fit. Doubt...

205 starter and belt problems

The prenegange starter soleniod is at fault from what you say or the switched 12 feed to the solenoid The noise could be the starter motor, the alternator belt or the water pump. Sprinkle some talk on the belts and if that shuts it up then new belt/tension required. Regards Peter

Hi guys,
Car newb here! I'm having occasional problems starting, the starter turns but the engine doesnt. Usually I can get the car going by physically shaking it, or jumping up and down in my seat as I crank the key. Any ideas please!
ALSO Since I took my 205 for a good old rag yesterday, upon starting it does the high pitched belt slipped...

The rear washer jets are indeed fed from the main fluid reservoir. If you can hear the pump going, the washer jet might be blocked. I'm not sure if a 1996 306 has the washer jet built in to the wiper arm (like on my old 1994 one) or if it's on the roof (like on my 2000 one).

I have a 1996 Peugeot 306XT and according to the user manual it has a rear screen washer facility. When I use the stalk control however, there is nothing coming out - even though I can hear a sound as though there should be.
My question is, will it have a seperate tank for the rear washer and where will it be? If it's supposed to come from...

Does sound like it. It Doesn't have a lot more than the 1.6 8v which has 90 BHP (and I thought THAT was underpowered!!)

I own a 306 1.8 16v XS, not a bad car but lacks in power. From previous sources people have said that this particular model was quite restricted with the 112BHP with a top end of around 119MPH.
Does anyone know of restrictions this car has or if anyone owns the same model and has better gains from it.

Hi,
Got a GTi-6 and recently the water temp has been up and down like a fiddlers elbow. It's OK when normal driving, but if stuck in traffic the temp rises to well over 110 degrees before the fan cuts in.
I am thinking 1 of 2 things, either possible head gasket on the way out (arrghh!) or thermostat needs replacing. You can guess which I am...

406 Idle Adjustment

Bosch Motronic MP5.1.1 is the system your 406 is running.
The idle speed is controled by the ECU & cant be adjusted without diagnostic equipment.
Your Steeper motor on the idle control valve might want cleaning out, Also give the idle control valve & throttle butterfly a good clean.
WD40 is very good & doesnt damage the engine.

OK, been told my idle speed might be set slightly too high, but how do I bring it down slightly? Had my head under bonnet earlier but couldn`t see anything that could be adjusted. Car is a 2.0 16v petrol GLX saloon.

Put it this way, you really don't want to be doing that. The limiter is set for a reason, that reason being that this is the 'safe' maximum speed of the engine before damage will occur.
Peugeot didnt set it there for fun you know! I have seen the results of an over-revved XUD engine, and it certainly is not pretty, it threw a rod, which went...

Hi
Turn the ignition on & enter the old 4 digit code.
Press button C
Enter a different 4 digit code then press C again.
4 beeps & 4 flashes from the Green led means the code is now changed.
A early GLX 406 also has total closure, Open all the electric windows, deadlock the car with the remote, Big button first & then within 3 seconds small...

Hi, just picked up a very tidy 406 2.0 GLX and have noticed that the revs at idle speed fluctuate between 1100 and about 900 rpm, is this normal. The car has ABS A/C and rest of toys but even when the electrics and air con are off, the revs still jump around.
Any help would be fantastic

It could be clutch pedal itself that is jamming, the cable could be fraying inside the shroud casuing it or the clutch arm is catching. Failing that then it could be clutch assembly problems (mainly thrust bearing).
I'd start by checking the pedal area, might just need the pin that it rotates on greasing. Could also pull the clutch cable off at...

Can anyone advise me.. I've a 2001 Y HDi Peugeot 306,66k and the past two months the clutch pedal has decided that it won't automatically fully return to its normal position.
It doesn't appear to be engaged/disengaged when it's not fully up, but it's frutstrating.. I don't want to take the car to a Pug garage to be told that it needs a whole...

Diagnostic connector is behind the panel underneath the steering wheel. Its the 16 pin EOBD type. You would need a diagnostic reader like sykes pickavant ACR, I sometimes have these for sale, take a look at my site forum, I'll advertise them there.
