Can anyone give me some advice on a couple of minor niggles on my 1998 406 TD.
Firstly, the bulb illumintating the odometer and trip has blown and so they can't be read. Is the bulb easy to replace? I can see 3 screws in the top of the instrument consule shroud but it insn't that easy is it?
Secondly, on the passenger side of the dash, behind the airbag, it sounds like there is a belt loose that is flapping against the underside of the dash. Listening very carefully, I think I can hear an electric motor whirring as well. Anybody got any idea what this is and how I'd go about repairing it (if indeed it does need repairing)?
Thanks
Paul

I've got exactly the same problem with the flapping/clicking noise.
With my noise it makes the clicking noise 4 or 5 times then stops momentarily, then starts over again. Really annoying!! Doesn't help that my radio isn't working (lost the code, obtained it but won't decode!) and so can't cover noise.
Last night I took the heater blower motor out thinking this was the source, but whilst holding my ear to it, the clicking noise was still coming from behind the glove box. I'm thinking that it's something like a defective relay? The heater motor was turning at very low speed even though the heater is in the 'off' position. That's probably the whirring noise that you can hear. I was going to post the same question as you have!!

Hi
Firstly, The heater blower motor is ment to turn even when the heater is set to off, This is to get airflow through the car.
The motor whiring could be the the cabin temperature sensor fan, Do you have aircon, climate control fitted?
The clicking from behind the dash will be the flap motor & its stripped gears on the air intake flap, Comman problem that a trip down the scrap yard & a hunt through the Peugeot / Citroen pile for a good working replacement will sort out.
Bulb illumintation just needs the clock assembly taking out, Yes those 3 screws & then another 4 screws & a couple of connector plugs is all if I remember correctly that hold the clocks in.

Hi
The flap motor is behind the glovebox, Its fairly easy to get at & replace.
Theres 3 black plastic push rivits that hold that trim on under the glovebox, Unclip these, Remove the carpet trim & you have access to the heater assembly.
If you look at the heater assembly its on the left hand side, Theres a small grey gear that connects the motor to the flap, The flap clip is a bit of a pain putting it back together if its your first time doing this job.
2 x screws & one brown electrical connector plug, Its a small black box your looking for.
Pop down your local scrapyard & have a hunt around the Peugeot / Citroen pile, A Pug 306,405,406,605 with aircon is what your looking for or a Cit Xantia,ZX,Xsara,XM with aircon, Or pop down the Pug dealer & part with around £85 for a new one.

Hi
Heres some pretty pictures of the flap motor.

Heres one of inside the motor.

Heres the clicking culprit! The gear that strips!
I have heard that some radio control model cars use a similar gear & some people have fixed a dodgy flap motor with one before.
