Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi,
I have a phase 2 306 DTurbo. Recently I have noticed slight coolant loss - (the low coolant light briefly came on before I topped up).
On examining the radiator, I noticed a patch of white/blue deposits - does this signal a leak?
I'm hoping its not HG. Theres no sludge in the coolant or mayo in the oil filler..

According to the handbook that I got with my R reg Phase 2 306 DTurbo fuse No 14 (15 amp) is for the central locking ECU.
Maybe that would do it but I am unsure?

Without snipping any wires is there a way to temporarily turn off the central locking on my 306.
It has taken to locking and unlocking as you drive down the road.
I have found an autoelectrical guy who is willing to take a look but in the mean time can I pull out a fuse or disconnect a plug somewhere and just go manual for a while.

Not sure if the 406's use the Stub Axle back system like the 306's... but looking from the rear are the wheels sloping inwards or outwards?

UPDATE
Many thanks to all for the comments. I forked out £65 for a complete alignment.
The Toe was way out on the rear wheels. The spec is 0deg10 to 0deg20 and one was -0deg32 the other -0deg35.
There is an adjustment for toe which which the tyre specialists discovered when they were doing the job.

Alternator is fixed in place and there is an adjuster pulley which goes up and down to adjust belt tension - from memory there are two alan head bolts to loosen, than a bigger adjuster bolt to make it go up or down. If you put the car up on ramps or jack up and have a good look underneath you should be able to see how it works.

the central locking decided to work for a while today, the first time it has since i bought the car last week, it had recently rained (could there be a clue there?)

On my old 306 XSi... had the same issue. So i um.. cut the wires to the locking in the boot and did it manually ;-)

The 405 Mi16 used 15 inch wheels with 195x55x15 tyres, so that would seem to be the best choice.

Hi,
Got a 405 with 14 alloys - 185/65-14 tyres. It'd be nice (when the tyres are nearly worn) to go to 15 wheels. I can then fit 195/55-15 tyres. Rolling diameter is the same to 1mm so no differences in speedo etc.
BUT I know that some other Pug wheels will fit the 405. Is it the case that ANY will fit?

a sporty looking steering wheel off a later Peugeot 205 does fit a phase 1 405

i've fitted one to my phase 1, £5 from a scrapyard, it's about 15mm smaller in diameter but looks so much better.

to remove the moss from around the sunroof i would suggest taking to the local garage and giving the car a clean with a jet wash.

Forecourt fuel pumps are calibrated on a reasonably regular basis, so I would guess that actually you had run it very very low indeed, and filled it right up the filler neck!

I have just bought a 2000 406 petrol estate. I ran pretty low on fuel and filled up, but was then surprised to manage to fill with 72.85 litres. The handbook suggests 70.
It's great to have a big tank, but I wonder of the pumps were not calibrated properly.
Do any other 406 owners get in excess of 70 ltres in their tanks?

I have got a 1997 R reg phase 2 306 DTurbo which has developed a clonking noise on the rear suspension.
I have managed to pin point it to be making the noise on the drivers side rear.
Looking underneath there is a rod with a spring on next to the damper (only on the drivers side), this rod and spring assembly seems loose.

Your starting problems are most probably air leaking into the fuel system.
Look down by the battery, and you will see the fuel priming bulb - use this to prime the fuel system, keep squeezing until it gets harder
Then try and start the car - you'll find it's much easier.
The next thing is to start looking for the split in the fuel pipes usual...

Is the suction noise when you take the rad cap off with the engine hot, or after it has cooled?
I *think* you may have an airlock somewhere, which is restricting flow. My concern is that if the airlock is around the coolant temperature sender, then it won't be reporting the correct temperature to you, so the engine may be overheating without you...

'94 Pug306 xldt, recently the fan's have been coming on even on a normal run, temp gauge doesn't (yet?) go above halfway but when I take the rad cap off the system sucks in air as if it's been holding a vacuum, and needs topping up with about a pint of coolant/week.
The oil seems clean, there's no muck under the oil filler cap and no leaks to the...

1991 peugeot 205 1.0 starts fine in damp weather but then after a few minues the engine sometimes stalls & then wont start again for ages (sometimes up to an hour) it turns over but just wont run.. any ideas people? once its going it seems fine idles ok with choke out etc.

Idle for this engine should be 800-850 rpm. The setting for this is on the back of the injection pump, a screw and locknut on a small lever.
The cold fast idle device (wax unit, very rarely works) moves this lever when the engine is cold, so do this setting when the engine is at temperature. I will see if I can get an image up.

Any idea what the idle should be? Also i can stick it in 1st take my foot off all the peddles and the car happily drives at 10-20mph. is this normal or an indication that the idle is too high?

The bushes work by deforming as the bar rotates. If the bushes are not gripping the bar, then they are indeed worn out. Changing them isn't easy, but is possible.

After replacing the track control arms, the bushes which locate the front anti-roll bar on the subframe started creaking when going over speed bumps. I tried lubricating them with Halfords rubber and nylon lubricant spray but it hasn't helped, in fact I think it's made it worse. Any ideas? The resistor pack is under the front plastic window wiper tray. Its on the other side behind the upper dash glovebox. In fact you may be able to get access to it by removing the upper glove box back panel. I have seen it in the haynes manual.
No idea where the relay is. Also worth checking connectors for the blower motor. I recall seeing one near...

The blower does not work I have checked the fan by puting 12 volts across it and it works ok I stripped and cleaned the heater controls and they are ok the problem seems to be there is no power going to the fan speed switch. I've had a similar problem where the plip will not work (LED won't light up etc) and have simply removed the batteries and cleaned them and the contacts and put the batteries back in and it has worked.
Are there any signs of corrosion on the contacts that could have been caused by a split battery in the past?

A small stone in the brakes will do this. They can make a mess of a brake disc, so I'd have both front wheels off and have a good look for foreign objects in the brakes.

If the driveshaft boot is left, all the grease will fly out, grit will get in and very soon you'll need a new CV joint.
Oh! and it will fail the MOT.

a mechanic has just done some maintenance on a squeak in my car when steering right and lift and also sticking brakes.
He has advised me that my nearside driveshaft boot is split as is my offside front slipper rubbers split also.
Does anyone know if these are big jobs to fix and how serious it would be if I left them? He said all the grease...

what car?
Sounds like it could possibly be the beginnings of a cv joint running dry. Or maybe something stuck in the brakes? Is there any noise when the wheel is jacked up and rotated off the ground?

Hi, converted my phase 1 to a phase 2 last year and am currently using the old bonnet stay to keep the hood up.

The noise question could be tyre tread pattern noise. Had this aon Ford Focus sounded like the bearings were shot but only at50mph, new tyers sorted this out. As for the slow return, has it got one of those return shock absorber looking things on it?

turn on ignition with your old key or remove key blade from plip and turn on ignition then point plip at sensor on roof and press about 10 times then turn off ignition and test plip it worked for me let me know how you get on

Check your normal exhaust system - if a small hole has appeared somewhere there then you will hear the turbo whistle. The noise usually lags slightly behind the acceleration of the engine through the gears.

It sounds like the metal clip is about to let go & leave you with no clutch.
Try fitting a new plastic pedal stop & metal clip, Your talking less then £5 for both bits at a Peugeot dealer.
The fun parts fitting it, Its a bit of a fiddle to do, Some long needle nose pliers are a god send with this job.

For those that aren't familiar with the 405 clutch pedal, it has a plastic socket that the clutch cable end feeds into and is then secured with a metal clip
The problem i'm getting is generally from standstill ie 1st and reverse when you put the pedal to the floor, the cable slips through the cable end clip, dislocating itself...

Full kit must be, belt, adjuster, idler and water pump. Have a check on the prices at the top in the HGSF bit. It is the best way to replace the lot if a little dear.

Hi
Have a look around near the thermostat area for a small brown connector plug attached to a temp sensor.
Check the connection to this brown sensor because this feeds the Bitron box with information.
The Bitron box controls the cooling fans, STOP & High temp warning lights & Aircon.
If the sensor or its wiring goes faulty then the fans & warning...

Whilst driving I have been noticing the STOP light coming on and off occassionally. After stopping the car I notice the engine fan has kicked in although the temp is reading around 80 degrees.

BTW, guys did a carbon cleaning fo rthe car , saw the before and after result with an endoscope, sure have a big difference, also the engine has less vibrations after that, not to mention less carbon content from CO meter measurement.

If it's a 306 1.9 TD the gasket should only cost less than a tenner from GSF. You can fit it you self in about half an hour. Not a big job.

Hi, I've just got a new 309 GTi and I'm having a little trouble with the immobiliser. It keeps beeping and won't stop. It beeps about every 5 seconds or so, but has no effect on whether the engine starts or not and keeps beeping irrespective of whether the engine is running or whether the key fob is held to the sensor. This is an infernal dash problem.

Basically, the two green indicator lights are on permanantly, like stuck on, simultaeneously - though not flashing. The 'outside' indicators and hazards work on the outside as they should though you cant hear them clicking. Same with the hazards....

I am carrying on from my last post, it appears the dash board will have to come out to replace the matrix, ehhh, help. The process will involve takin off the steerin wheel and taking offline for a while the air bag, what do i do to access the nut holding on the steering wheel, how do i stop the air bag goin off.

It may have to be a peugeot dealer...
