Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi guys

Xantia got a bit hot yesterday, stuck in traffic on M42.. had a look today and the cooling fans weren't coming on even with aircon switched on. Cleaned terminals on three relays between two fans... still no good. I have read through previous posts and subsequently disconnected the plug from the brown connector on the...

as the spheres on my 3000cc '94 XM were getting hard, I proceeded in changing the 3 front ones first, keeping the old rear ones, to start with. I used AMTEX spheres as specified by the GSF shop for my car year, production number etc. The car changed alot and was amazingly comfortable, so I decided to proceed and change the remaining 3...

Are you sure you have the correct spheres in the right places. The centre sphere is responsible for the soft ride as it has virtually no damping effect, it is similar to an accumulator sphere. If you have an outer one in the centre and vice versa you will get an awful ride as the 'soft' mode wont operate and you will have a permanent soft ride on...

It does come as standard with the Picasso in the UK, but will also be available as an 'spare part' from a dealer.
Maybe you can get your local dealer to search in the spare parts database.
Also note that it came as 'standard' equipment in my Berlingo Multispace. Can you get those in Aus?

I am wondering if I could pick the brains of the many knowledgable enthusiasts who make up this forum ?
Although the car has long since gone (and I wish it hadn't) our old 1975 CX had a peculiar suspension problem which I am not sure ever got cured.

Hi there , just had to replace a radiator fan on my xantia, so I took the old one to bits for a look. The magnets fitted to the case are a perfect fit on the bottom of the oil filter. might attract some metal in the oil and I cant see it doing any harm. Regards john.

Hi forum,

To get a softer ride while retaining the rigidity of the hard mode can I put a centre sphere with a bigger hole in the middle? Would this technique work?

Although it could certainly be an intermitant electrovalve, first I would be checking that it isn't the rear outer suspension spheres.

With Hydractive 2, if the left and right rear spheres are punctured, the suspension will be completely rigid in the hard mode, but NOT in the soft mode, as you still have the middle sphere giving you some...

Hi All,

In another thread I mentioned that I was replacing the hose on my Xantia from the LHM tank to the pump due to an air suction leak.

I have a clear loop of hose connected on the main overflow return pipe (the second one back from the front of the tank) to monitor any bubbles returning from the pressure regulator to the tank.

Simon you don't mention any oil leaks from the pump as far as I'm aware, just that you suspect air is somehow getting in, any fault in the pump body whereby air could be drawn in, will almost certainly result in oil getting out especially during engine inactivity.

folks I have no speedo drive, after a clutch change some time ago. I assumed i had damaged / disturbed wiring - but when i finally got around to looking at it, it seems the speedo drive main pinion isnt turning. as I understand it, this sits around the RH driveshaft, in a housing, and is plastic. It must have been disturbed when the driveshaft...

thanks both, I will remove the DShaft and the housing for the speedo drive and see what i find.

Malcolm, there is no movement of anything where the electric speed sensor sits, i.e. with that item removed, the worm drive that is supposed to turn it is stationary. I had both wheels off ground and car in gear, running - could feel nothing.

Building up to the weekend and intend to do front discs/pads on mine and the missus car. Any tips? I'm ok with doing them but someone mentioned rewinding caliper before refitting new pads and that there's a tool to make life easier. next time you need a new supply of non-stick grease - purchase the alu-variant instead. Its of much more general use with the widespread use of alu alloys these days.
Be sure the bolts are just barely touched with the paste. Any surplus grease will end up on the brakes as pr Murphy's laws :lol:

It says Antigel on the bottle, no big deal about it, just the words Antigel on the front, so does this mean I've saved a packet by not getting it from my Citroen Dealer... £14.99 for 5 litres of it.

I'm guessing Antigel is some kind of chemical formula in the antifreeze/summer coolant. Is it Comma that supply Citroen dealers with this stuff? Or...

thanks cloggz, i think it's sorted now, i took some time finding the one on the bulk head too, i filled up until water came out of both bleed valves then i kept the both open a little and kept opening them a little more to get air out as the engine ran, i opened the one on the bulkhead too much and it came off, hot water weeing out, so i know...

My trusty van (expert/dispatch) just took us to extredura (spain) and back (3497miles) with no problems except in the dunquerque wine-shopping carpark it weed a load of steering fluid. Level hasn't actually dropped below min yet and steering is still working fine but there is clearly a leak from the offside end - the gaiter is particularly wet,...

I know this isn’t unusual but is the MK2 instrument cluster any easier to remove than the old one the reason for asking is the last one I dad was a Mk1 1995 and the Speedo cable was a complete female dog to get back in...

I think you`ll find that the speedo has a electronic feed instead of a cable.I recently changed my dash bulbs on my 97 mk 1 Xantia & all the cables were pluged into the bottom front of the cluster,so no routing around at the back.It simply slides out even with all the cables still atached.

So now we have the AX wider than the 106? Still, they had the same engines. So guessing the same driveshafts too?

If the car is wider, and the engine and gearbox the same, the driveshafts have to be longer to reach don't they?

There are lots of parts that Peugeot and Citroen tend to share between different models but the driveshafts are not one...

As has been mentioned, Haynes have decided not to produce a manual for the facelifted Xsara. I'm curious about the digital communication network that I understand controls virtually everthing on my car. Was this fitted to the pre facelifted version - ie is it detailed in the older Haynes manual?

Hi,
Seem to have developed a creak from the back of the car (Xantia 1.9TD 1994). When I stop and get out it creaks when it starts to settle. Don't know whether it creaks when I'm moving. Had new spheres fitted 6 months ago and it lifts up quite readily and happily. Love the car so any help and advice much appreciated. Thanks

It is but, if one side is going you can bet your life the other one is on the way. Yes, it could affect the steering, but steering problems ar more often than not caused by uneven tyre wear, from one side to the other not necessarily uneven wear on one tyre.

The lights on my Xantia behind the dashboard are sometimes dim and sometimes okay. This is variable between different nights. Is there a separate voltage regulator for these that may be on it's way out. The main voltage of the car seems okay, and other lamps etc seem fine. I don't believe that they are dimmable, so I don't think it can be related...

Can anyone tell me what the technical differences are between the 92 and 110bhp versions of the 1.6 16v hdi engine, as fitted to the c3/c4 etc.

I assume it isn't the addition of an intercooler anymore.

Is it worth forking out the extra dosh for a vtr+ (with the 110 engine) over a vtr (with the 92...)?

The accumulator sphere on my new V6 Xantia is desparate to be replaced, pump ticks every 1,5 seconds.

I know this sphere is desparate to be done, but i haven't had time to look at it on the car.

Does anyone know where the accumulator is on the V6, and will a basic accumulator for a Xantia do from GSF?

Actually, it's the opposite. (The soft part, that is)

Putting hatchback rear spheres onto an Estate will make the ride harder/harsher than normal. (The pressure is 40% lower and the damper valve holes are smaller)

Also near maximum load weight the suspension will probably have very little suspension travel due to the sphere diaphram almost...

This will probably be my last contribution, so I'd just like to say thanks for all the advice given regarding my ZX TD. It did 50k miles in 3 years, 128k in total, but the problems were piling up. Hi people

I went to my local Citroen dealer today, and asked about Hydraflush... 5L of it is £47.50, my mouth fell. Then i calmed down, and thought about it and thought, not too bad, then went to GSF site just now £14.50 for Total Hydraflush (5L). So GSF it is. Also I've booked my car in to get the tracking done. £27 isn't bad really is it.

You can buy the genuine Anti-gel from GSF for less than the dealer - and it's 'just' antifreeze. Valeo recommend it to prevent corrosion of the heater matrix. How much is it worth to avoid taking the dash out? Mind you, I refilled with the gen stuff after a rad change, and the matrix leaked anyway!

I posted recently about getting a HDi Xantia and am pleased to say that I have just got one. Found a pretty mint 2000 model 110 with 55k miles and full service history. 1000 miles in and am very pleased.

The only problem so far is a flashing air bag warning light. For the first 700 miles it worked how it was supposed to but after stopping to get...

if its anything like my 306 HDI,

its going to be the cable going to the seat belt pre-tensioners under the drivers seat.

The one in my 306 will flash for months at a time, and not flash at others, for 2 years now, its not flashed during the mot test which is brilliant!

When the weather gets a bit better this summer i will get it done!

I just tried fitting my old kenwood cd player to my xantia, ill need a wiring harness but i noticed that the autoleads facia adaptor iv got has no place to actually screw the head unit in securly. Is this the case, when using the autoleads facia adaptor the head unit can slide in and out freely with only the wiring holding it in place?

It should have but I don't have it. Not that I would stick it on anyway. I find it works just fine poking at the buttons on the head unit with my fingers :). Or will do if i ever get around to fitting it again since I changed the car. Installing the new speaker cable into all doors and running a fat power cable to the boot area is putting me off....

Started the car at night to drive 90 miles home only to find the instrument lights were not working! By this I mean the back lights that illuminate the speedo and rev counter. Everything else worked on the car including the actual car headlights thank god.. I started the car quickly and I think this may have blown a relay as the dash lights were...

When I turn left my Xantia Clonks just after going past the centre point, I can feel it through the steering. It doesn't do it all the time, or when first driven from cold. I had all the steering checked, couldn't find any excessive wear, but no clonk was occuring at that time!!! Sounds like it's from the steering column? Any thoughts?

Yes, the rubber strut tops.
They can let go and hit the bonnet.
With the wheels in the straight-ahead position, check that both are at the same height under the bonnet.
If one is a bit high, it's about to break. :shock:

I'm new here. I hope that someone can help. I need a new rubber LHM return hose that goes from the pump up to the LHM tank. Can anyone give me an idea of cost? I will fit it myself. I assume that it's a specialist Citroen part and my local factors won't stock it. I find out today that it's perished and split, so also, can anyone...

Hi Simon,

I have these visions of a pig flying happily over a frozen hell before I'd pay those $$$ for a small length of rubber hose. There is most certainly nothing special about mineral oil hose that can handle a little suction. Infact is readily availabe quite cheaply by the metre.

Yeah what usually happens is the car will take forever to...

When I drive over speed bumps (the ones you can straddle but I've been told not to as it ruins your tyres and tracking) with the right tyres it is fine. When I do the same with the left side there is a cracking/clonking noise that sounds painful!!

Any ideas greatly recieved.

Raise the offending side and grasp the wheel by the top and bottom and rock it.

If the lower balljoint is gone, there should be some freeplay in the vertical axis.

My TD was not as powerfull as my last and I put it down to the fact that this one is heavier (estate). Today I got a feel for the power it should have and all the way to and from work I tested it. The measure I used was the speed I got in 2nd before the engine sounded like it was going to pop... I was getting it up to 30 or just over then having...

Not sure how you'd check pipes for leaks.

Personally what I would do it is take them all off, give them a thorough visual inspection... i.e bend them at the bends looking for cracks or brittleness, holes, or anything that seems dodgy, if you are happy with it then put it back on and make sure you are happy with how tight it is, only you can judge...

I have developed an intermittent clicking sound coming from the steering wheel/under the steering wheel. It comes on if I partially move the indicator stick but no indicators come till it is fully engaged. The clicking is also too fast.

An earlier post suggested I may have a dodgy relay as my washer stalk wasn't working fully (no intermittent...

Hi all.

On another thread I was given some great advice to replace the transisters on the fan motor. (Fan running full on ect!)

Am having trouble obtaining these transisters, MJ11015. Was given a Maplin ref no of N72AH but these have now been discontinued.

Can anyone please help by telling me where I can obtain the correct transisters from?...

Chaps, how hard would you say it is to replace Clutch Master and Slave Cylinders on a 406 V6?

I am thinking of buying one and the owner has been told this is whats wrong with his car.

If that Diagnosis is wrong, I guess the car may need a clutch.. that could be a big job.. (compared to my normal Xantia 1.8 Clutch) ?

Find out the cost before you commit - I believe it's a sealed unit, and costs in the region of £400. Getting the gearbox end out is easy by the looks of it. No idea about the pedal end - I guess access is likely to be 'limited' at best!

Folks, what are your opinions of this engine, in a late Xantia.

So far I have had many TD 1905 cars, and a 1.8i petrol Xantia. How will it compare?

Is is any harder to work on?

power? i am not sure if it is turbo?

I think mine is Bosch. It doesn't even have a key pad although my previous one did which was also mechanical. Not to long ago I sold a late fly by wire, complete engine and gearbox on ebay, 73k miles and I only got about £120 for it, would have paid me to break it for spares!

I'm confused. Can anyone help me out with the correct part numbers for front discs & pads for a Xantia 1.9TD SX (95N) and a Xsara 1.4i LX(mk1,16v 1360cc). I understand that there's either Bendix or Brembo but any recommendations. Can't seem to find any pads to go with Brembo discs, assuming i've picke dthe right part number in the first place!...

Ive just change my fuel filter on the xantia, on the petrol model it sits next to the fuel tank on the offside.

I was surprised to see the outside of the filter nice and clean, so obviously i would like to know the condition of it, (it has not been changed in the 2 years ive owned the car)

Is there way i can tell?

Just tilt it so the fuel flows from the inlet side. I just replaced mine and the gasoline that came out was a dark red :oops:

chaps, I am offered a 406 LPG 2 litre Turbo

should be a useful car? what are these engines like? I used to have a 605 SLi is this the same engine with a turbo bolted on? Should be reasonably powerful.. maybe same engine as Xantia turbo?

when they took the engine apart the vaulves has no space at all! There was also some dodgy wiring which meant the car was running super rich. It was also only producing about 25mpg compared with about 35-38 I was getting on unleaded.

They repaired what needed repairing and stuck a load of somethingg in the fuel tank?!?!? and it got through the...

After driving for a few miles my Activa starts to produce a squeeling sound from the front nearside (left) wheel.

I've had the wheel off several times. I've checked for sticking caliper. Everything seems free. I've even cleaned up the bottom pin and made sure that it lets the caliper slide easily.

I've adjusted the handbrake cable to make sure...

If the bearing is worn enough to allow that sort of movement, I would think you would be able to feel the movement with the wheel jacked up. Squealing only usually comes about when the pad is in very light contact with the disc, they used to put 'anti squeal' shims in the early disc brakes, which tilted the pad slightly. It used to be a good sign...

I'm really sorry to keep on about my leaky Xantia..

This evening I cleared all the leaves and debris from the O/S and N/S scuttle drains below the windscreen. Loads came out and both drain holes are now completely clear. It staggers me just how so many leaves get in there..

Whilst doing this I noticed that the plastic trim along the bottom edge...

Hi. I'm going to replace the rear calipers on my Xantia. One has started pouring fluid out of it. The other has bad corrosion and now sits at a bad angle.
Is there anything i need to put on the surfaces between the caliper and the mount?
Any other points/hints things i should look out for?

what are the possibilities here? of having an all electric hydraulic pump?

i understand it would shift the load from the engine driven hydraulic pump to the alternator therefore back to engine, but would it be more reliable? or wear sooner? would we need a big pump?

i'm thinking of this because the the C5 and the C6 have electric pumps don't...

One of the methods of raising a HP Cit with a duff engine is to use a drill (electric or cordless) positioned with the pump drive belt on the chuck or large bit.. then squeeze the trigger and hang on so as to pressurise the system. An electrical pump drive could probably be fashioned on this principle.. perhaps with an hydraulic/electrical...
