Malc,

I assume you've released the Cam pully adjusters, there on sliders.. Just a sugestion, but Im sure you've thought of that... There an eccentric tensioner arent they, not like the XUD spring loaded unit...?

thanks Paul
but yes its a bit like those orible Vau****l tensioners, with the plate on the back with a V in it and when under tension you are ment to alighn the pointer with the V, this and the idler are new and all in the kit

incorrect tensioner? Something holding it "in tension position" a little bit too much??

A few years back the 1.8 16v xantias were recalled for breaking timing belts. part of the recall was to change the old style eccentric roller tensioner to the spring loaded one with the pointer, so if its got the pionter type then it should be correct.
The belts are tight to get on though & usually need quite a bit of pulling to get them on, you just need to persivere with it.[/i]

well acording to my local pug dealer the spring loaded tensioner with the pointer is on earlyer 16V engines, and the plain excentric one is on later cars

Thats deffo not the case with (mk1) xantias, the 1.8 16v had an eccentric roller which was recalled & changed to a spring loaded pointer.
The 2.0 16v has the eccentric roller & wasnt recalled.

wheeler that recall states

" Recall affected vehicles and fit a quality assured replacement camshaft drive belt. ",

dose not mention the tentioner,

i was going by what the pug dealers parts man said whilst i was trying to track down the corect tentioner for this car,

the other diferance i found between these two types of tentioner, is diferant diamiters by about 2mm, the standerd excentric type being the smaller, hence allows the belt to go on easyer,

this type of tentioner is used on all/most of the TU engines with no known failiures

The reacall was to replace the belt, tensioner & roller.
I'm 100% sure the info I gave in this thread is correct.
I know this type of tensioner has been used for years but like i say the 2.0 16v engine is virtually identical & always used the eccentric roller, this engine was never recalled for a timing belt issue :?:
Autodata 2007 also shows that the earlier models have the eccentric roller & later models have a spring loaded pointer one.
Did u get the belt fitted yet ?

yes but only by fitting the excentric adjuster, i found this to be approx 2mm smaller which alowed the belt to go on easily
