Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Have just returned to French cars by purchasing my third Xantia this time an HDI Exclusive Estate. It has a few little problems as expected..

The door trim that is clipped in to the outside door keeps un clipping itself. The trim pushes back in fine but quickly pops out again. This happens with both front doors. Any ideas please?

Hi folks. In the middle of choosing my first Xantia. It's the Forte model and doesnt have an arm rest. Does anyone know if it's possible to add an armrest from a different spec model or is the seat different (No mounting point?). Thanks for any help.

You can buy generic ones from ebay that you just bolt into the centre console on the xantia. Not made specifically for the xantia but im sure if you measured the centre console width at the mounting points the sellers would be able to tell you if it would fit or not.

You can't easily is the simple answer - the 'code' is hard wired onto the PCB by earthing certain pins on the chip. I remember that were some instructions somewhere on re-coding a BX remote - it involves a steady hand a fine soldering iron!

I've just looked at my MKII Activa and the centre lap belt is totally conventional and lies in an untidy mess on the back seat whereas on my MKI it stows neatly in an inertia reel. What a retrograde step :( The MKII seat does have a clip to stow the centre lap belt tidily when not in use on top of the squab but it's impossible to train the kids to...

Going up a BIG hill with the caravan on the rear last Saturday, and steam/ smoke started coming out of the fresh air vents in the centre of the dash (they were open at the time).

The temp started to rise, but I stopped it by putting the heater on.

On arrival at my destination some 5-6 miles further on, I notice water leaking out under the car....

same symptons when my matrix started going (though radweld held it until i scrapped the car).... the old bx used to suffer a head gasket failure where it 'blew' into the cooling system....thus increasing the pressure in the cooling system.... if you have similar failure it could have blown the matrix

tricky to spot as well as you dont get any of...

I have a Berlingo van on a 52 plate, straight 1.9 diesel (DW8 engine).
It didn't start one morning after it had sat over the weekend when we were having really cold weather. It had been really cold and I thought maybe the diesel had waxed. Then again a cold morning recently it coughed and spluttered so I figured a glow plug (or two) must be...

Done it!
I decided not to remove the clamp! I just undid all the bolts and all the wiring and pipes to it, also the clamp on the side of the engine holding the pipe down, and then just manouvered the air distributor around and worked around it!
Got all the new plugs in. It was only one that had died!

Morning all,

Friend of mine has a 2002 Xsara Picasso 1.9TD which died. He previously had a problem with the lift pump in the tank which was solved by banging the bottom of the tank. A local garage has confirmed that the lift pump has now died.

How difficult is this to change and whats the method ?

I am just wondering if xantia sunroofs drain like BX ones, ie the water is allowed to drip down onto the headlining and then drains down via 4 tubes, one at each corner?

Does anyone know if the transponder for the immoiliser is in the key fob (blip) or the little bit of plastic on the key blade.

there is a 2000 2.0HDi Xantia on ebay that wont run because it needs a new 'fuel pump'. I doubt I will take the plunge, but am wondering is this likely to be the diesel injection pump or do these have an auxiliary lift pump in the system to help out the injection pump?

Bosch systems use a low pressure in-tank lift pump that is prone to failure any time after 60k miles, but there is no lift pump on Siemens systems. It seems unlikely that anyone would list a car for spares / repair for failure of the lift pump, which only costs a £100 or so (not at...

I've just bought myself an insurance cat d 2004 C2Hdi 102K miles..with some low down front end damage.. I need to replace the rad and mounts and the front bumper/spoiler.

re-wire the radio with only battery live,ignition live & an earth (+ the speaker wires) connected to it,the problem is that the multiplexed wires are connected to the aftermarket radio but the BSI cant comunicate with it.
You will probably find that there is no ignition live at the back...

I'm just running alternative scenarios through my mind to decide whether
to scrap an Activa I've had lying about for the past year which I still haven't

After a few days of intermittent starting o the old zx td, leaving work now (8pm) it eventually had enough. The booster pack didn't help either, so something somewhere must be killing something.

It started as a slow turn on the starter, then it started missing, then it needed help from booster packs, then it needed luck, when luck was...

Been through something similar recently.

Foolish garage coudn't fid anything wrong & replaced battery for good measure. Wise garage found that that the earth strap was corroded WITHIN the connector - not outwardly visible (I had wire-brushed the terminal).

I also recall there are 2 earth straps - 1 to the gearbox & another somewhere?

I got a radiator fromt he scrappy

My pipes go OVER the radiator connector, and clamp

the radiator that arrived fits OVER the pipe. Obviously i have no way of securing as the radiator part is solid plastic

Any tips?

Do i need new pipes or can i get my current pipe to attach somehow?

the breaker obviously couldnt be bothered to take off the...

In the space of a day my newly acquired Xantia's ride has gone from perfect to uncomfortably hard at the rear.

Spheres are just over a year old and I believe they were regassed versions.

The height corrector seems to work OK, in that it reaches any set height after say 30 seconds. It is terribly rusty though!

The rear does sag quite fast once...

I'm thinking aloud so by all means ignore - but has anyone found a way to prevent corroded-on spheres then?

e.g. Copper grease? Waxoyl? WD40 regularly?

It seems to me the threads we're battling against are internal to the hydraulic system, so I'm not sure copper grease could be recommended - maybe a coating of PTFE-containing spray (GT85) prior...

I have a xantia 1.9TD estate

The last two time I have checked my fuel consumption it has only been returning 33MPG is this normal, I am fairly heavy footed with it but thought is should return more than this.

Any ideas where to start looking for faults?

A good place to start looking for sticky brakes is the rears. Crud (technical term), due to the reaction of the two metals, builds up between the suspension arm and the brake caliper. This always builds up as a wedge and forces the brake caliper out of alignment. First rubbing pad to disk, then rubbing caliper to disk!

Evening all,

Friend of mine has just rang. He has a 2002 Xsara Picasso with 1.9 engine. It will start and fire, run for about 10 seconds and then cut out. In the time it starts it will rev but then dies. He says he is low on fuel so I've told him to put a gallon of diesel in and ring me back. Suspecting diesel filter if the fuel doesnt solve it....

I agree it sounds like a LP fuel pump in the tank, unfortunitely you cant access it from under the seats its a drop the tank down job.
Get underneath it whack the lowest point nearest the filler neck with a rubber mallet whilst cranking it & it should kick into life. will need replace though with the seal.

Since replacing the crankshaft pulley & damper a worying noise developed and on inspection Jim found the crank bolt wasn't fully tight. I bought a new bolt and it's nice and tight now but the noise is getting worse, particularly on deceleration and idle. Hi, my 1.8 berlingo has an intermittent stalling/cutting out problem. On starting the car and in the first few miles of the journey, applying the brakes (either in neutral, clutch down or in gear at any rpm causes) means the revs die and the engine cuts out. This will happen a few times before it fixes itself and is ok for the rest of the journey...

Holy cow!!

My Dad reports exhaust has failed on his 02 Xsara HDi 90 - gone either side of the cat at the front. New section? £250 :shock:

Slightly worried, I looked up the price for the equivalent piece on my Xantia HDi 110. £360 :twisted: At least there is a repair pipe for the Xantia so if the long pipe goes at the back, it can be repaired...

After a quote of £140 to change the plugs i decided to go alone.

they have arrived.

So, any tips from previous experience, or should i get the one si can off and take anything in its way off aswell??

Going to soak the area in wd40 hours before too, even overnight

My only suggestion, apart from reading up the tips in the previous link is.

Warm the engine first, ally expands further than the steel plugs, this will help a lot, ok so you are gonna burn your pinkies on the head, but these will heal eventually and that costs nuffin! as opposed to cracking the ally around the glow plugs, this will not heal and...

I had that gasket fail and it led to fumes entering the venting system so if you have the fan on and smell fumes when statiionary for a minute or more you can be sure it's leaking.

I bought the OEM kit about £15 - gets you new bolts, springs, cups, washers and the original brillo pad. Reason being, I was told, is the pattern parts are not up to...

I've been struggling all morning to get the gearbox back on after my clutch change on my 1.9TD. Try as I might I just can't get the gearbox input shaft to pop back in. Nearly 5 hours now I've been struggling and I just cannot do it.

I've had the box off htree times and checked the alignment of the clutch plate and release bearing and everything...

Have a MK2 1.9 TD Xantia. Was running fine with maybe the odd puff of smoke on hard acceleration.

Due it's mot and noticed the exhaust a bit loud took it into garage and part of the system replaced. Wife was using the car today started fine drove fine then the engine management light came on. Loss of power, lots of smoke greyish but not black or...

That's a very unusual failure.

It's clear now, the management light was on becasue the timing was out due to the sprocket failing. It must have been cracked previously and then let go.

That'll be a good buy for someone at £250. The most it'll need is another head and given it went at tickover, the cam caps may just have survived. It's a fair...

hi, just a quick question,

my dad has a 2001 2.2hdi C5 and a 2003 2.0hdi exclusive C5. i have read somewhere about LDS fluids and was wondering if these cars use LDS fluid or do the still use the LHM as on the xantia,s he has previuously owned.

There is LHM leaking out of the rear of my pressure regulator opp end to the shere, ive not yet been able to determine if it is on the regulator or a pipe connection, is it common for a regulator to fail? Does anyone know if a recon regulator can be found if this is the problem and if so what is the procedure for changing...

Hi

My son who now has my ZX TD, has developed a fuel leak from the white plastic X shaped bung at the base of the Fuel filter alongside the fuel inlet from the primer.

What is this and how can it be cured, renew 'O' ring or screw-in to tighten. ??

It's one of those star type clips Sooty, I can't think of their proper name, they have angled teeth that allow easy installation and the angle of the teeth then bite into the plastic.

They're nearly impossible to get off without inflicting a bit of damage.

If you can though, you'll find normal O rings doing the sealing.

I have just bought a V reg Xantia Estate 1.8 and it has a problem with the gear box IE it is stuck in gear although the gear stick seems to go through the motions. It will free wheel with the clutch dipped. Has any one got any idea what could be wrong. A gear linkage worn or broken perhaps :?:

I'm going to need to change all four tyres at some point soon and have been checking out prices. These days I do about 15,000 miles per year in all conditions. The car is fitted with 215/55/16, W rated. I'd like the Michelin Primacy HPs - but they cost. Best deal on those so far is £440 fitted. The same outfit will do 4 x Avon ZZ3 tyres at £315...

My semi tame mechanic did a water change on my ZX for me.. But -- I saw no bottomless plastic lemonade bottle around? so asked him about it.. :?

He had the engine running at about 2500 rpm and told me to open the bleeder valve near the top by the heater hose, when I did that water shot out about 2 feet! lol.. :shock:

He then kept the engines...

As Mike says, what your mechanic did was absolutely fine. As long as he left off the pressure cap and kept it topped up then all air will bleed a treat.

The massaging of the top hose is important and allows you to positively check the operation of the 'stat. As Mike can vouch, this method works fine even if the bleed valve is out of comission :D...

Hi
I noticed a veggie oil smell under the bonnet, spotted when the car overheated (due to radiator leak) that the right injector was bubbling with veg oil and a small pool next to it.
Can these be tightened or is it new injector time??

Man, got so many thing wrong with this car....

Maybe it's just the excess heat? It might not be a problem once you're back to normal temperatures. Also, it's possible the oil leaked from the leak off pipe rather than the injector. Cheap and easy to replace.

Just wondering has anyone changed the LDS fluid in a C5 yet?
I was going to do my own soon as the car has almost 100,000 miles
clocked up.
I tried searching this site but can't find any details on the procedure.
I am assuming it will be different from the old LHM systems.

Well the suspension and steering are great on my car now.
But the Engine is dead.
Went to London yesterday and just as we arrived the power steering started to feel a bit heavy.
Got out to check the lhm level and noticed thet the o/s of the engine was black with oil.
Managed to get AA home, only took 8 hours.

Looks like the head gasket to me....

I think there is damage to the bore.

I noticed the weird noises before I set off, just after I'd checked the oil level.
After noticing the noises I went to tesco and filled up the screenwash and tyres.
When I did this there was no oil leak at all.

I ask because it would appear my 2001 C5 has a changer cable fitted - the blue plug is connected behind the radio, but I have no idea where the other end is! I can't see it emerging under the...

Well, I was guessing if they've installed the cable at the radio then the changer-end must be tucked away somewhere quite obvious where the changer normally goes, but I can't see any sign of it.

If you could tell me (or show me!) where the wire emerges from, that'd be helpful - there's already one wire under there for the airbag I don't want to...

I was wondering if anyone had come across an ABS fault where the light is on when the engine is started and only goes out when the vehicle begins to move at above 20mph or so. Then the light can sometimes come on while driving and then just as it came, go away again. All without warning.
