Service spanner wrongly displaying on C4 coupe.

My son has a C4 coupe 1.6 hdi. It's a nice car, very economical and has done less than 30k. On the dash display the service countdown spanner is being wrongly displayed as it is nowhere near a service yet. Looking on t'internet a few forums state it needs a software update to fix the problem which Citroen charge for (as usual

). Some people have said even after the upgrade the problem has come back. Has anyone got any experience or tips on how to sort this out?

Is it permanently displayed?
Low washer fluid, among other things, can trigger it.
You could reset it - tell it a service has been done, but you'll then have to remember when to do the service, or do one early, can't hurt.

Yes we did a reset but it came back.

I would have one of the members with a Lexia take a stab at it.
