Air con

Unread post by liverpoolfc »

With myself recently purchasing a 2000 w reg Xantia hdi forte to find that the air con doesn't work.I have read through the manual with the car and found that the possible causes are that it needs re-gassing or that i have a leak somewhere or failing that i need a new drier bottle are there any more causes for it not to work any help would be gratefully received thank you.

Xantia's Air Con system is rather reliable.. Useually a system Vac down and re gas sorts them out... If the car has stood a while Or the previous owner has not used the system, then this can reduce the system to non working.

System seals are located: Two at the rear of the engine bay behind the LHM Tank were the pipes join to the evaporator, then theres two in a pipe join under the Top Engine mount, cam belt end.. then theres two were the pipes join to the Condenser, and Two larger ones on the Compressor. Theres also two on the Dryer..

My guess - A System Vac down and re=gas should well see your system working!

Mines leaking according to a re-gas machine, letting air in during the vacuum test I assume. Anywhere I should particularly check for leakage?

Cheers.

Other then the Seals in the areas I said above, (All systems follow a similar layout, even V6 models, just the dryer moved.

My Guess would be then a hole in the Condenser infront of the Radiator..

If you really want to find the leak, I made an Adapter from an M8 bolt, that screwed into the Recharge port, and then connected to a compressor end (tyre compressor that is) Simply fill the system with ordinary air and listen for Hiss's this then is a cheaper way to find the leak , fix it, then once sealed and fixed get it Vacc'd and Gassed up...!

Air is cheaper then gas too for finding the leak

I did think about doing something like that but didnt know what sort of adaptor to make! How did you make it? My 306 AC re-gas connectors are like a car valve, just bigger, and the bit you push in to release gas is quite far in. I'm not really sure what the Xantia connector is like. I don't suppose you can remember how to make one off the top of your head?

Thanks! :D

Would concur with the condenser but the shaft seal on the compressor is a good possibility at higher mileages,
but it would be a rather large hole by air con standards if you could hear it hiss.

Problem with using ordinary air is that it's wet which doesn't do the oil any good, mind I suppose if it's been open to the air via the leak then it doesn't make a lot of difference the oil will likely need changing anyway.

Propane or Butane would be my choice you can smell it long before you will ever hear it then use soapy water to look for bubbles in the area where you can smell it. You can also run the compressor with it in which is usefull in that the high side pressure will be much higher than 50 psi and may make the leak easier to find.
