Crankshaft pulley bolt

Post by KennyW »

Hi all,

I tried the search facility for the above subject but couldn't find the post I was looking for.

The last time I tried to remove said bolt, it wouldn't budge. So any of the gang give me their methods of removal or post up the entry

Thanks

Kenny

Hi Kenny,

My method for a tight one is to use the starter motor to help...

Make sure the gearbox is in neutral. Make sure there are no timing pins anywhere in the engine. Make sure the engine is immobilised so it cannot possibly start.

Use a beefy 22mm socket on a good stout "T" bar and trap the "T" bar under the wishbone or other convenient bit of chassis. The idea is to hold the crank bolt absolutely still whilst the starter motor turns to undo it.

After all that is done, just blip the starter. The crank bolt should shock loose a perfect treat. It may take two blips.

It soulds brutal but is perfectly safe and very effective :D

Thanks Jim,

That's the method, I was trying to find. Going to do the belt tomorrow along with new water pump etc.

Just to add :)

Although its unlikely, ensure no one is in the vicinity of the socket / bar etc incase it did decide to fly off...

i have never had to resort to this method,

i alway get an assistant to hold a long leaver to lock the fly wheel, then with the socket on the end of two long half inch drive extentions and a two foot knuckle bar, the end of the outter extention sitting on an axle stand, i find this always works for me

Well I have used your method, but if there was no chance of getting assistance, then Jims method is also a good way to do it.

I'm fortunate enough to have a compressor and air impact gun but whatever method you use it is much easer if the engine is hot before you try and shift it.

Excellent :D

It should just wiggle off Kenny. Wiggling it can really help.

If, despite a good wiggle, it resolutely remains where it is, a two-legged puller will do the job. Rarely needed though...

This is a handy thread asI've got this job to do on our HDi once I've got the blower working and was trying to think what the best way to get that bolt out was!

Didn't realise how noisey it was until I started messing with the heater as it's Cheryls car.

Gosh yes :o After being used to petrol cars, diesels do seem incredibly noisy and remember an HDi is very quiet by diesel standards.

Some modern diesels sound like the builder left his spanners in the sump...

One of my neighbours has a newish V6 Pauxhall Diesel Estate of some description or another. It's big and black. That thing really does sound dreadful when cold.... My other neighbours' Sprinter van sounds a whole lot nicer...

The engine itself is nice and quiet, the noise is being caused by that horrid crank shaft pulley.

Just priced a new one from AEP at £42 + VAT, hopefully going to do that this weekend too.

Got a list of stuff to do with it........

Hi All,

Okay, Pulley required me to make my own tool similar to Mike's tool on handy hints.

Except, the 2 threaded holes I have idon't know what size they were but found to bolts to fit perfectly.

My design was simple metal plate 1/4 " thick 2 6.5 mm holes drilled 53mm apart with 10mm hole drilled in centre threaded with 12 x 1.75 die.
Replace pulley bolt back and then place pulley remover in place. Using a suitable bolt in centre, to turn onto pulley bolt and pulley slowly comes off.

My only problem today is the spring tensioner within the right hand engine mounting is stiff and required a little assistance to move.

It is now stuck is not moving.

Anyway to free same, suggestions please :?:
