It's an auxilliary heater unit. It's fitted to HDi-engined cars due to the fact that the diesel engine is so efficient that it doesn't produce enough waste heat to operate the heating system satisfactorally in cold conditions. Heater not doing its job

Check the rubber pipes going to the matrix at the bulkhead are hot, if they are then the linkages that drive the flaps in the heater unit could be at fault.
If the pipes are not hot then there could be an air lock, (quite likely as you have changed the coolant), or a blocked matrix.

Have had a long running problem with the ABS light coming on - usually when driving very slowly. It would remain on until I turned the engine off. On re-starting it would be on for the first 100m,
then after self diagnostic checks, go off. Would be OK for a few days then the same problem would re-appear. I checked all sensors all read 1,050 ohms....

I had a similar problem on a rear door of my 1997 Xantia - totally deadlocked.
It was quite a job to fix it.
Took out the back seat, removed the door trim, removed the connecting rods, removed the outside door handle, then managed (with small light and mirror) managed the find a release catch.
With the door open - it was no problem to remove and...

Hi John - £1000??? They're taking the p---. To do them yourself would cost you around £25 per side. If you ignore the worn bearings, in the end the arms will be sufficiently damaged that you won't be able to just do the bearings. You'll need new arms as well.

Just remembered something else wrong! from time to time a yellow warning light appears on the dash, its on the right of the speedo and revs and looks like a light bulb, but not to sure. Check out rear H/C linkages. Broken, seized or ball popped out.
Shouldn't be too hard to sort but be sure you use a pit, a hoist, axle stands or ramps. Remember; what goes up, must come down - preferrably whilst you're not under it as can happen when fiddling with height correctors.

A pressure test done with no water in the system would be more conclusive, a tiny hole in the matrix wont let water out very fast so the pressure wont drop much and may not even be noticable, but it will let air out at a much higher rate.
Where else would the smell of coolant come from, a leak in the matrix isn't going to start as a raging...

I think a Citroën garage would say that was an exceptable oil consumption. The question is, where is it going? Are you leaving drops of oil after you where you park, or is it all going out of the exhaust? The most common cause of high oil consuption (apart from leaks) is worn valve seals (especially with PSA cars) but worn piston rings would have...

Hi Steve - Yes, when you depressurise have the lever on the lowest setting and turn the steering wheel. Don't turn the screw more than one turn, otherwise you'll loose a spring and a tiny ball. If you have four spheres on the back you have hydractive, if only three, you haven't. If your 2.1 is like mine, you won't get the block from the fluid...

Reverse & brake lights fault

Sounds like you have got a bad earth somewhere, you will have to trace the wires and find the earth point.
You could take a known good earth from somewhere and conect that to the lights, if they work with that the culprit is nailed, don't get it wrong though or you will need some fuses to go at.
Some cars switch the reversing light's by earthing...

Hello,
I own a 1996 Xantia 1.9TD Mistral. The reversing lights have stopped working completely. The brake lights have also stopped working with the exception of a small section of the spoiler mounted LED display.
I have checked fuses and bulbs and they are fine. What would be my next course of action?

Still sounds like height corrector associated to me unless you've got bearings in the struts seizing.

Inside the left hand rear view mirror. If you look closely, you'll see a small loop of wire hanging down under the middle of the mirror glass. Pull this down while at the same time being prepared for the glass to release. Once you've got it out, the means by which it is held in place becomes obvious.

As an educated guess, I'd say possibly that you may be a victim of (as a hypothetical example) say 25mm long stud in a 24.9mm depth hole. In other words the stud is bottoming out before it is putting the amount of pressure required to seal the gasket. The sudden loss of fluid in a hydraulic system can appear to be a mystery when you can't see a puddle on the ground.

why does my recently purchased 1996 Xantia 1.8 16v require at least half a litre of oil every 1000 miles ? the car has a full dealer history and has done 60k. it does not appear to smoke on start up or hard acceleration and coolant looks o.k.

Pool of LHM fluid in drivers footwell

Take the trim panel off and have a look, it should be obvious if its coming from the brake valve, if it is don't drive it.
As I understand it there are replacement seal kits available for the brake (doseur) valve, but that these are merely dust seal's and this sounds like a more serious problem than dust seal's, ask about them at a main dealer....

Problem as above! I am assuming the leak is from the brake circuit, above the brake pedal. It came back like this after it's MOT.

panel lights on

Hi Philip - Your wiring sounds OK. Some panel lights do come on even without the side lights.

On my BX14 I find the instrument panel lights come on even when side and headlamps are off. Also the accessory position doesn't feel very positive and in this position I get Battery and handbrake lights come on!

I have 1995 Citroen ZX 1.4i and this does exactly the same things as yours. When you go up a hill the temperature gauge goes up to around 100C and when I can down a hill it drops back to normal or just below normal. Also when cruising down a dual carriageway the temperature increases to around 100C and stays there.

Rear brakes squeeling are normaly down to a thick build up of corrosion between the caliper mounting face and the trailing arm, you need to unbolt the caliper and chip it all away from the caliper, then a good smear of copper grease and refit the caliper, if it is left as it is the corrosion will actually push the caliper over, bending the bolts...

Oil leak on nearside is probably just the intercooler / manifold seal - did it whistle as well?
Poor starting hot and cold is probably air getting in - can be a bugger to find. If it's a dealer car get them to fix it before you buy, if it's private, tell them it's something serious and knock £500 off the asking price....!!
