Given the number of 'After-sales campaign' notices concerning Takarta Airbags I have been made aware of when looking up parts from PSA for members, I thought I would post a link to the following documentary that may be informative concerning the issue with these igniters.

According to Takata, the chemicals in the airbags’ explosive charge can...

This has caused some problems for organisations like ours and the Team are currently looking at the best way forward. This...

BX FRONT SUSPENSION

Sounds as though you have front strut problems.
Best solution is to go to a car scrapper & buy a couple of reasonable front struts which are pretty cheap, recon them & swap for the ones on the car. That way, less chance of you getting caught without a car if you have any problems.
Info on doing the job here including list of parts:

I was wondering if any of you have heard of any problems with the clutch action getting sticky on series 1 Xsara's. This seems to be a problem with my dad's car, particular when the car is warmed up, and makes gear changes more jerky. It had the clutch cable replaced a while ago, and this eleviated the problem somewhat, but it is...

Xantia Breaks

Hi Malcolm - Welcome to the forum! I too have a '98 Xantia estate and I cannot say that I've ever noticed any delay when releasing the footbrake. Admittedly, when the front wheel is off the ground there's an awful lot of drag when the wheel is turned, but since the MOT tester doesn't find fault with it, I assume it's OK.

Last post

Just purchased a '98 Xantia diesel estate - 39K miles. The breaks do not release immediately when removing foot from pedal. I took it back to garage and they told me that it was a delay related to the hyrdro suspension. Is this correct? The handbrake when applied without foot break releases immediately and car rolls on slight gradient. Can someone...

HI, this is noty definitive by any means but on the o/s is quite a chunk of the loom and the ECU.....it would be worth checking to see if any wires have been damaged and thereby affecting the circuit. Other than that youre into fault codes and painstaking tracing - unless of course , anyone else knows better.
Cheers
Mike

Fuel consumption on PETROL models

by alan s » 30 Nov 2002, 04:39

First post

Got to agree; these PSA motors are extremely economical particularly when performance is taken into consideration.
We get about those mileages out of the two BXs we have (one 8 valve & one 16) and the best consumption I ever got out of the 16 was in a vert mountainous area that had speed restrictions on it which leads me to believe that hard fast...

Having read all the replies on the topic regarding full consumption on diesel models, I would like to know what is normal for a petrol Xantia (1.8i, 16v, 1997)
When I bought it in September (69k miles):
32.8 mpg
After the full 72 miles Service in October (73k miles):
36.2 mpg
Now (after a new catalic converter and silencer):
39.1 mpg
Today the...

Hiya,
Rear ride quality on my Xantia is not very good despite replacing the rear spheres. After raising the car to its highest position then dropping it back down, its great for a little bit, then goes hard again. This leads me to beleive its a pressure related problem.
Since I got the car in June, the pump (Fitted new only just before I bought...

xantia - white smoke on starting

by mbunting » 29 Nov 2002, 21:24

First post

I would be inclined to check the glowplug relays first.
Although your glowplugs 'appear' to be working, they actually stay on for a while AFTER the light has gone out. Try counting to ten after the light has gone out, and see if this makes a difference ( it does with mine - I have a problem with one of them ).
As regarding air in the fuel line,...

My 1996 Xantia 1.9TD emits clouds of white smoke on starting from cold. The car idles unevenly but this settles down as soon as I pull away. I've had the injectors checked by a specialist and replaced the glow plugs. I left the car with a main Citroen dealer to check it out and after two days I was told 'it smokes a lot when you start it' (Duh!)....

Air filter zx td

by JohnD » 29 Nov 2002, 23:24

Sometimes they're oblong and sometimes they're round. If you've got a round one,it's to the left of the battery, down at the front on the right, (as you face the engine). The top is held by one nut. Some of the pipe work may need to be loosened off to enable the lid to be moved to one side. The old filter lifts out and the new one drops in. Clean...

Forgive me for sounding stupid but where is the air filter positioned on a zx td is it the round canister located to the right as you face the car i will have to get a manuel for it.

Rear Axle Bushes (Rubber Mounting)

by alan s » 29 Nov 2002, 15:25

First post

The rear axle (swing arm) bearings actually come in a kit which I understand is available ex Andyspares.
It's not that big a job; one I usually describe as 2 hours the first side & an hour for the other. If you're going to have a problem it usually is with removing the outer race which can often be badly corroded in. With all the ideas I've seen...

Can Andyspares supply Bushes for Rear Suspension Arm & Bolt for same Front, any advise for fitting same (Rear nearside) jmd.CORRECTION I am referring to the Mounting to which the subframe is bolted. This mounting is fitted in the actual body of the car, into the boot area, and the subframe is bolted on to it. Automatic Wipers

by vanny » 28 Nov 2002, 21:48

First post

Winter electronics project, in the cold and wet, with all those fidlly wires and numb fingers, might be one to wait till the summer.
Suppose it wouldnt be too impossible to have it tied into the speedo, hence the faster your driving, the faster the wipers go?
Any more interesting projects? My last achievement was rear electric windows, but thats...

Last post

I thing the automatic wipers you can get on the Peugeot's and C5's are a good idea.
The local Pug dealer has quoted
£6.25 for the window brackets.
£130.40 for the sensor unit itself.
£43.55 for a new wiper column stalk.
Bearing in mind I have a Xantia ( not a 406 ), I won't be doing the stalk.
Presumably, such a system merely raises a voltage...

Laguna / Xantia Key Remote problems

by debutant » 29 Nov 2002, 03:05

First post

I read something once before on one of the topics regarding the Xantia remote key. If I remember well, it was because of changing the battery.
It said that you have to put the key in the ignition and turn it just on to power (don't start). Press the remote keys a few times and it should be aligned.
I tried to find the topic back but I couldn't. I...

If it's anything like my BX it'll be mounted somewhere low down on the radiator (reverse of logical position for it!). If the fan runs at 2 speeds then it'll have 3 wires on it, 2 live feeds and a return. If you pull the plug off the sensor you should be able to short across the terminals to make sure the fans are working at both speeds.
If they...

My car is currently overheating due to the fan not turning on. What i would like to no is how to test the fan. I no that the fan in most cars can be tested by shorting out the fan swith. The problem is that i cannot isolate the switch.
Is there anybody out there that knows where it is on the VSX ????

Worn engine supports??

by alan s » 28 Nov 2002, 17:50

First post

Niek,
Can't speak specifically about an XM but we did have a CX that showed similar symptoms caused through an engine mount under the motor which was mounted on the crossmember going soft & gooey. This also caused the mount on the end of the gearbox to sit on it's lower edge (it's sort of like a bolt sitting in the centre of a rubber mount).
The...

Hey,
I think I have one or more worn engine mounts. The car (xm '95 16v) starts vibrating when revved up to about 2500 rpm at standstill.
When cornering in third gear (LHD car) the lever moves forward (towards engine) when taking a right turn and backwards when turning left. It's most noticable in third gear. Does anyone recognise this or have...

Zx TD POOR FUEL CONSUMPTION AND STARTING PROBLEMS

by Dave Burns » 28 Nov 2002, 02:47

First post

White smoke from a diesel at cold start up means vapourised but unburnt fuel due to either insufficient temperature being developed or not enough fuel being injected.
Check the glow plugs and change the fuel filter, check for cracked or split leak off pipes between injectors, and the blanking cap on no.1 injector at flywheel end.
Dave

Xantia front discs

by JohnD » 28 Nov 2002, 00:12

A couple of hours should be sufficient to do the job providing you have the right tools to hand. Torx head bolts need to be undone on the brake caliper, and a length of 7mm square rod is useful for winding back the pistons. Make sure the grooves are aligned before refitting the new pads.
