fuel consumsion

Post by shaunthesheep »

all,
has anybody got any ideas on what the average fuel consumsion should be for a 8v xantia, L reg '93, 1.6l, engine in good condition, fuel filter changed recently, car has done 138k miles
i dont belive that i drive like a madman<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle> so the family tells me.
mostly town driving 30mph or below
but sometimes motorway driving upto 70 mph,

i have noticed that i get on average to a full tank
(65Ltrs capacity) 380 miles does this sound about right??, which i've worked out to be about 83 mpg, does this sound correct???
regards dom

fuel consumsion

Post by ghostrider »

shaun,
Oh that it did do 83 to the gallon!! to convert to MPG divide the miles you cover by the number of litres you have used then multiply the answer by 4.54 this will give you MPG, in this case 26.54 MPG which I would think is about right

Dom, the unfortunate fact is that the Xantia 1.6 is just not that economical. Although the old XUD5 is a good old engine, and Ok in a BX, in a Xantia it has to haul a fair bit of weight around, and its economy that ultimately suffers. If you're getting 30 mpg average, than thats good.

Shaun,
I assume you drive until your tank is complete empty <img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>On an average you still would have 5 liters left in your tank. This gives you a mpg of 28.75 (not bad at all for mostly town drive). I have a Xantia 1.8i 16v 1997 (78k miles) and manage to get an average mpg of 39 these days (mostly motorway at 75mph).
Cheers,
John

I get between 38 and 43mpg.
- 94 TD SX
- Rubbish in boot.
- 35 miles of stop/start motorway traffic per day.
- Journey time approx 60 - 90 mins.
Don't forget, the colder it gets, the more fuel your car will use ( petrol or diesel, but more petrol ).
Also, the colder it gets, the quicker your car should get..
Cold air is more dense, the petrol ECU or the old TD pump will be able to inject more fuel because more air is going in.. Cold air = even better intercooler on TD <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Whislt we are on this subject, I may as well check my economy out to make sure I'm getting what I should :)
94 TD SX. Only ever me in the car.
My journey 5 days a week consists of one mile down a single track lane, and then 5 miles along a dual carriageway at 70mph. I then drive a further mile in 'urban' conditions. Same thing on the way back.
Twice a week (ie weekends) I'll drive into town - 1 mile down the lane, 3 miles of dual carriagway with a 40mph limit and then a mile of 'urban' conditions into town. There are several sets of lights along this route.
I'd estimate I do another 15-20 miles of 'random' usage a week, mostly in urban conditions.
My tank of fuel seems to just about last me a month - and it's usually on about 440-450 miles when the Orange light goes into 'stay on' mode, and I fill up again.
Does this sound about right? I think it works out at something like 35mpg, which sounds a little low for a diesel.

I think I must be particularly light on the gas, because in my ZX 1.9D (non turbo) I generally get above 50mpg, usually well above!
Anyhow, does anybody have any opinions on those magnet thingies which you put on your fuel line to improve fuel economy? My colleagues reckon that it's a load of old rubbish and cannot possibly work and is only placebo effect. Well, I got hold of one of those little jobbies cheap and thought I may as well give it a whirl. I have only had it fitted for one tankful so far. After 363 miles of urban motoring (no motorway) I have used 26.2L of diesel.
This is 13.84 miles per L or 62.9 mpg (using 4.54L/gall). This does seem to be quite good. If it's only placebo effect, then at that rate, it will do for me!
By the way, my tyres need inflating, the car hasn't been serviced for 18 months and I have had a boot load of gear. Perhaps I should change the oil and filters and pump my bleedin' tyres up?! <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>
The fuel guage seems to be a bit 'iffy' and goes up and down, so I rely on the odometer and the actual amount of Litres which I put in the tank. I always try to fill her up when I have used approx 3/4 of the tank. My collegue reckons that the magnet must be having an effect on the odometer in that case, although of course it is nowhere near.
What does anyone think?

Any estimates for a 94 2.0 sx 8v while we're on a roll.
Seem to be forever filling up.
Will endeavour to record mileage next time I fill up.
