Fuel consumption on PETROL models

Post by debutant »

Having read all the replies on the topic regarding full consumption on diesel models, I would like to know what is "normal" for a petrol Xantia (1.8i, 16v, 1997)
When I bought it in September (69k miles):
32.8 mpg
After the full 72 miles Service in October (73k miles):
36.2 mpg
Now (after a new catalic converter and silencer):
39.1 mpg
Today the mileage went over 77k and my next goal is 40mpg (should be do-able seeing the history).
Not sure why the mpg is that good for a petrol model. I do stay most of the times within the speed limits, but I would expect a 35mpg at the best. Either I drive very conservative or my engine will die soon!
Any comparison material?
Cheers,
John

Got to agree; these PSA motors are extremely economical particularly when performance is taken into consideration.
We get about those mileages out of the two BXs we have (one 8 valve & one 16) and the best consumption I ever got out of the 16 was in a vert mountainous area that had speed restrictions on it which leads me to believe that hard fast driving can drastically effect fuel useage. I don't "toddle along" but I get the impression that some who complain about fuel consumptions are often driving cars badly in need of a good service including new filters & the like, or drive as though they should be wearing protecive overalls, crash hat & visor with sponsors badges all over them
I have one son who drives a Jap car (the disinherited one but who can't get anywhere near the mileages we get out of the cits yet his is only a 1.5 litre and he is driving the same route as we are.

I've drove home from my parents house last night over a mixture of fast A-roads(65-75mph) and the A1(80-90mph) for 180 miles and averaged 26mpg. In London on my drudge into work that will hit 24mpg.
My car? Xantia 2.0i VSX auto.
Best I have seen is 33mpg driving 300 mile to Durham, but that was at 70-75mph, when it should give good economy. Unfortunately my old Carlton 2.0i on that same journey would give 36mpg at 80-85mph, so overall I'm not that impressed with my Xantia's economy. And my car have just had a complete service, and had the Catalyst changed back in April..
