Xantia front discs

Post by Barry Somerville »

I have a 1997 2.0 16V vsx and notice on my tyre change today I need to replace my front discs and brakes. ABS model of course. As a DIY jobbie, could any of you good folk advise me of the time to allow for this one, and any pitfalls to look out for. Thanks.

A couple of hours should be sufficient to do the job providing you have the right tools to hand. Torx head bolts need to be undone on the brake caliper, and a length of 7mm square rod is useful for winding back the pistons. Make sure the grooves are aligned before refitting the new pads.

I did mine a couple of weeks ago ('98 SX TD) and it only took just over an hour. Tedious bit is winding the pistons back in.
Tip: Make sure you have a T55 Torx bit _before_ you start <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> One of those 2-3" long jobbies would be ideal.

I changed brakepads and disks on several Xantias (I'm on my 4th Xantia now) and its getting easyer every time. Allow about 1 - 1½ hour to do the job well, and remember coppergrease on the back of the pads (carefull, not on the front!!).
The retraction of the pistons is actually not such a tideous job. Just turn it 1/4 turn and then apply pressure with some tool. I usually use a little crowbar, but a big screwdriver would also work. By turning 1/4 and pressuring the job is done in 2 minutes without turning yourself silly.
Have a nice one. Lars P.

regarding changing the brake pads,
i've also found that if you take the edge off the brake pad corners, i've found that this will help in stopping any squeal afetr you have copper greased them.
i've also fould a brake pad wind back cube made by draper, heres the link:- drapertools.com
