Petrol fuel filter

Unread post by Niek »

Hi,
I intend to replace the fuel filter on my 2.0 16v Xm, will there be any pressure on the fuel when I disconnect the lines? If so what should I do (try to catch as much as possible )? Anything else to look out for?
Niek.

There will always be some pressure in the fuel line due to the effects of gravity (you're underneath the car sweating trying to change the filter whilst it pours petrol on you!!)
I generally have the new filter close at hand whilst I remove the supply pipe (tank end) from the old one. I then fit the fuel pipe to the tank supply end of the new filter, as fuel does not pour through it straight away (generally) whilst I remove the supply out pipe from the old filter and fit to the new one. If the filter is held in place by rubber straps or plastic clips, as many are, remember that the new filter must go through these clips/straps before you push the fuel pipes on.
Other general rules apply ie no smoking, no fireworks etc etc. :-)

Managed to do it without setting the garage and car on fire. No real pressure as you said. The only thing is, who the h*ll randomly picked that spot to stick a fuel filter. It took an hour of looking around, taking the spare wheel off and generally probing about for me to find it (in the end I took the RH rear wheel off and I saw it). The damn thing lives behind the tank, sort next to the rh side rear wheel on top of the subframe. You have to take the middle exhaust damper off (it took me a good 2 hours to get the thing on six months ago )and the heatshield. Then you can get to it but need arms with about 4 joints instead of the usual two to undo those horrid clips....
When you finally have all that sorted, the exhaust looms in the corner, I swear I saw it grinning at me . Took me an hour this time so I am improving.
Just don't think 'I've got a spare half hour, I'll get the car over the pitt and change the filter'. It almost seems as though it was put on as an afterthought , they must have known they would be making fuel-injected Xms at some point??
