Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hello All,

Anyone breaking a Xantia 2.1TD?

Im looking for a replacement expansion tank... mines leaking a fair bit of coolant through the seam where the two halves meet.

My bank balance can't withstand a trip to the dealer, wouldnt like to guess what they'd quote.

Or can anyone suggest alternatives for a DIY fix?
Maybe this Radweld or K-Seal...

A big thanks to all who replied...

I tried the DIY heat seal method with a butane blow torch... wouldn't recommended!
It looked as though I'd melted the seam closed, but it wasn't long before the coolant leaked through again.

Will hunt down some of this plumbing epoxy / solvent and see if that does the job... otherwise its a case of either...

My power Steering, or Assisted steering failing intermittanly and randomly.

It doesnt seem to vanish if i increase the revs, if im in or out of gear or if the corner is sharp or gradual.

I think it may be my pump as sometimes its like this just for one trip then its fine again but its steadily got worse...

The brakes and suspension all respond...

Well it didnt slip while rolling upto a roundabout in nuetral at about 40mph earlier with the AC on and the lights on and rear demister :)

My old man has got a 2002 LX HDI-110 estate which I guided him to buy a few years back.

He wants to borrow my roofbox on occasion but his LX model doesn't have the roof rails fitted as std like the SX / Exclusive models.

You can get a Thule kit to fit. There are two kits listed, depending on whether you have fixpoints or not. I'm not sure what these fixpoints might be.

The best thing to do is note the three numbers you need and hunt them down on eBay, that's what I did.

The heater/ventilation on my Xantia LX Estate gives off an unpleasant smell when first switched on. Seems to happen wether or not the air con is swithched on or not. After a minute or so the smell disappears and all is well. Any clues what it can be and how to resolve?

Check under the front passenger carpet to see if its wet. If it is, then the scuttle seal could be knackered which is simple to resolve and it will give off a musty smell. The foam underlay may be soaking wet too. If the foam is wet, wet your fingertip and taste it to see if it tasts sweet. This will help to confirm if your matrix has gone...

Hi All,
I'm new to the forum so I appreciate this may have been asked before.

I have a '03 C5 Hdi - I noticed today under the rear wheel some fluid leaking onto the footpath. Seems to be coming from the Sphere ? Is this common with the C5 and is it an expensive repair?

Could I ignore it and if so what would the end result be ?

My 99 1.9TD has developed groan when turning right, it does not do it all the time but sounds as if something is dry. I dont think its a bush or anything as i can feel it slightly on the steering wheel could it be the ram on the power steering?

I would like to know as much about the technical specification of the Activa as possible in particular the engine.

I am reading that the engine was rated at 143bhp, others say 147bhp, and the official figures are 152ps (150bhp), which is correct?

Exactly how much boost does it run and what conditions?

I just went to the time and trouble of spraying up my mud flaps to colour match them to the bodywork. Unfortunately I used Halfrauds paint. It says Quartz Metallic on the tin and I used grey primer and the finishing lacquer as advised, but a match it ain't. :cry: Just wanted to moan, sorry.

I have just changed the oil and filter on my 51 2.0 HDI LX estate.
Reset the service counter. The dipstick says full but the computer says empty - flashing dashes.
Will the computer eventually realise it has oil or does something else need resetting (kicking) ?
Any thoughts please

Ok looks like I might be going to see a 2.0 HDI C5 tomorrow its only a basic LX model( less things to go wrong) is there anything special I need to look out for other than the cam belt?

Also if I go for the car would the seats from an estate fit a salon as I really need to get leather interior as my son is a haemophiliac and tend to suffer lots...

Well after a good check I'm now the owner of a C5 2.0 HDI 110bhp the cambelt was done only 3,000 miles ago and most things seem ok, its a smother car than the xantia but still feels like a boat on the back roads ( but I'm not a boy racer ) so should be an issue.

Only thing wrong is the radio dosn't tune into anything almost like a broken wire.....

I am getting two error codes on my 2004 C5 automatic AL4. P1800, Transmission clutch interlock safety switch circuit failure, what is the transmission clutch interlock safety switch, even the citroen importers don't know & P008C refer to handbook......
Any help or advice would be helpful

Yes, the LCD displays automatic gear fault and it goes into limp mode. Switching off the engine does not revert the gearbox to normal operation. It must be a HARD fault as it cannot be erased.

I have been offered a set of citroen/peugeot 17 alloys for a stupid price and was wondering if any knew if they would fit. I`m pretty sure the offset is right. They come with 205/40/17 tyres so the rolling radius is as near as makes any difference to my 185/65/15 tyres....any one have any thoughts?

I have 205 1.9 gti alloys on my 1.9td with 195/55/15's and they have transformed the handling, alright its not as floaty smooth as before but now it feels much more like my old bx tzd......smashing
Ideally i would like a nice set of 16 motorsport type wheels, but hey thats just me.....i haven't even got a spoiler on mine!!!!!

There is a vertical panel with a lip next to the towing eye at front. I bridged a plate from there to the eye itself. Welded that on catching as much metal as I could. You have to cut a template to make sure you aint preventing bumper and stuff from being removed. Then took the tubular female part cut from an axle stand. Weld that on to plate. Now...

Hi,

I'm considering buying a new small car and I was wondering if anyone has any opinions whether I should go for a Citroen C1 HDI or Peugeot 107 or perhaps neither.

I want the best possible MPG to make the best saving on fuel but I also want to use it on the motorway and have a reliable car that will last 6+years / 100,000+ miles.

After having a good read at threads on here and having a rather nice drive in the Xantia the other day (despite the dodgy suspension) as well as the fact that it is returning 45mpg AROUND TOWN!!! (HDi 110), I have decided to spend the money and get it all up to scratch.

Hi Toby,

No, a flat acumulator will not damage anything apart from the pressure regulator but it will compromise the entire hydraulic system. Brakes may pulse during operation and the car might sink when stopped and so on.

I wouldn't be so sure of that - dead flat (punctured) accumulator spheres will put tremendous strain on the pump...

If you go to the vehicle licensing site and put the reg number in you can also tell from the CO2 emissions figure

In the facelifted Xsara with manual gearbox the 90 has CO2 emissions of 141 g/km and the 110 is 138 g/km.

(The 110 is actually very slightly more economical than the 90, hence the lower CO2).

Leo,

Are you able to engage third gear when stationary or with the engine stopped? If so, check the linkages between the gearstick and the 'box and also check the integrity of the engine mountings, especially the lower one. If the engine has moved back due to a failed mount, this can result in gear selection problems.

I fitted a new front wishbone bush to the Xantia yesterday. All went well, apart from the usual struggle to press out the old one, and a slightly barrelled new bush.
Since reassembly there's been an intermittent clonk / rattle which I cannot pin down. Sounds very similar to a dodgy droplink, and occurs in similar circumstances (one-sided bumps),...

Can anybody enlighten me as to how I can identify whether an Xantia 1.9TD (not Hdi) is 90 or 110 BHP. It is automatic & I feel it is 110 BHP as comparing it to my 96 Xantia TD. the power seems vastly improved-but I can find no evidence as to its BHP. Both cars are 1905 CC

I thought all SD's were 75bhp and all TD's were 90bhp? Yes -
Main difference is the lack of intercooler on the 75Bhp SD version.
Quite easy to recognise if it is mising having both cars side by side bonnets open.

Does anyone know how to improve the adjustment to the O/S door mirror on a Xantia Estate? The N/S is electrically adjusted but Citroen decided to make the O/S manual. There is a small knob to move which kind of does the job but I always end up moving the mirror manually. I guess it is a door panel off job but wondered if anyone has any tips?...

Today I noticed the engine speed rise of its own accord; as if someone else was pressing the throttle pedal slightly! The K light came on.

Took it to get the code read, which was primary fuel circuit . Mechanic cleared the fault, test drove it and it didn't recur.

You guessed it, it has now come back, symptoms and K light! Imagine a stuck...

In my case I think is was something to do with a sensor on the air intake. The connector to this is broken and not “locked” into position. Used a tie wrap to hold it place. I also degreased and pressure washed the engine and replaced the air filter with a Green washable sports filter. Problem seems to have gone away, just don’t know which one of...

Been directed from the retro rides forum as I have a ZX with a problem.
It is a 1900 diesel turbo estate and has handled badly from purhase a couple of months ago. Just been in and changed the front tyres and found the nearside bottom ball joint was worn so bought a new one and set about fitting it, turns out it is the hole...

Job done, removed shaft and tapped the inner part of joint and of it came :D

The ball joint was supposed to be 16mm but the hole was knackered and no way would it tighten on the ball joint. I removed the bottom of the strut and clamped it in the bench drill and redrilled the hole to 18mm and fitted a berlingo balljoint which was 18mm :D The only...

My C5 is having a hissy fit at the moment, the parking sensors have stopped working, a beep is made on selecting reverse then nothing until I bump what is behind, the washers for the windscreen have stopped working, and the electric windows are out of sequence IE when you push the button on the remote to open windows they all work except the front...

Hi all,

A few days ago I was in asutria and they have for sale there biodiesel at some 1.2Euros which is about 20 cents cheaper than diesel, so I asked at the pump if i can put it in my 1.9 TD 1996 xantia, bosch pump and they told me citroens and biodiesel dont mix. Anyway I am assuming that citroen declared they wont honour warranty or something...

You have to be carefull these days.

My dads just cleared a load of what appears to be soaps out of his fuel lines in his old 2.1td and put Dino in it and its back to running fine.

I think due to demand far outstripping supply lately due to such large price differences that biodiesel producers are cutting the proper production timescales...

I know the new look ebay is totally rubbish and painful to use, but I'm

Hi,
Has any-one suffered from water dripping from the front center internal light, the one just above the rear view mirror. I have not had time to investigate yet but it is directly below the roof arial fitting so that will be my first port of call.

But any advice is welcome if you have already been there and done it. :)

Many thanks superloopy1, your advice was spot on and the job is now done. Once I could see the 'interior' of the roof where the arial fixing came through it was obvious that this is where the water was entering. :)

I also suspected the gearbox and in the garage they connected it to a computer and checked all the pressures that are supposed tobe there, also they have something called teaching the pedal - which means they adjust the opening and closing of the pedal by direction of the sensor on the diesel pump (Bosch).

Hi,
I have a strange problem with my aircon, in that regardless of wheter it is switched on or not, its on!
The only way to stop it, is to either have the interior fan switched off, or disconnect the pressure switch.
It still runs, even with the on/off switch disconnected!
Anyone any ideas?

The air-con should still be off if the switch on the dash is turned off and slider set to no fan, thats how mine works anyway. With the switch on but slider turned to off, the air-con is not activated but the moment its moved across or on auto, you can here it kick in and idle goes up.

I use a simple trick of having 1 - 2L of veggie oil in the tank. This only burns after the dino-diesel has been used, and gives the tell tale sign of use via the change in smell.
When you smell this from your exhaust, you know you're low on fuel !
Highly illegal of course, unless you declare the 2L to the customs, and pay 50p duty.

If only that...

Don't be scared to drive it! An Activa is to be enjoyed and believe me, an Activa can be as reliable as any other Xantia. Mine is well used and touch wood, it's totally reliable. Nothing is that delicate on them :D

I have a 55 reg picasso. When the ventilation fan is on the fresh air coming thro has a similar smell to stale urine. This doesnt happen when the fan is on or when the air conditioning is on.

Anyone come across this before

Anyone able to make a personal recommendation from actual experiences

Is there a way(without chipping) of improving a C5 90bhp HDi?

My dad has got one and im sure its the 90 as i cant see any intercooler or associated pipe work.

Is it possible to improve the engines in these at all?
If anyone has driven both is there much difference?

No problem, as long as it passes the smoke density test it'll be OK. CO2 is not tested at MOT time :D

In fact, CO2 testing is such an involved job, it is likely never to be introduced for MOT testing...

Sorry about this, I have had long standing problems starting my Citroen C3 1.4 HDI 16V but that stopped when my turbo blown-up got another turbo fitted but I have noticed that the car produces blue smoke on start-up and during normal driving, the car did smoke abit before the turbo went but this now seem excessive? just woundering if anyone could...

Just curious, but did the replacement turbo seem to cure all the problems you were having, like the hard starting with plumes of white smoke and poor running?

My C3 is still as bad as ever. Now have trading standards on the case who think we have a fairly good case because of the age of the car. Citroen UK gave me a complete refund for the two...

I have a small weep at the top of my radiator and have decided to replace it (I do not like using sealants).

hi all i have a little problem with the wifes picasso when she was leaving a junction today the engine died just a little bit then the diagnostic light came on it still runs ok but i cannot get the engine light off. tried disconeting the battery without success does this have to go to a dealer or can any good garage fix this.

I have searched all the threads on the HDi engine which mentions the EGR (and theres tons :shock:

BUT, no mention as to where it is located - the autdata shot shows it in top left for a 306 Hdi but it doesnt appear to be there on mine :?:

Due to a horrid grinding noise ( OK it has gone down to the pad backing) eminating from the rear nearside, I am going to fit new pads and discs. I just have a few questions.

The car is a T reg facelift Xantia 1.9TD hatch.

1 The manual says you have to depresurise the system, why? as far as I can see you are not splitting any hydraulic joints.

I used a thick sheet of plastic (part of a builders sheet) to put between the suspension arm and the calliper. Four years later I have no corrosion.
I contemplated on this when I had the C5's rear calipers refurbished and wondered if there was a reason they didn't fit a similar gasket here from new. Cheap and easy solution to an obvious problem....

There cant be many around with 42k on the clock, i would expect a decent well used Xantia of that age to go for about £450/500 quid, yours should be pretty exceptional condition for age and would make about £7-750 on ebay. Worth more quite possibly but people are not scared by 'high' mileage these days and would prefer a newer car but with more...

I've just struggled huffed and puffed like a pig putting the wheels back on my Xantia.
Whatever happened to good old fashioned studs to place the wheels on, then placing the nuts over thenm to tighten up. It's all back to front now, and you have to perform a circus act, balancing the heavy wheel in one hand, and TRYING to locate the wheel bolt...

As a 75 year old I struggled with this problem for years on my XMs, tried turning off the heads of a couple of wheel bolts to locate the wheels (limited success), and then hit on a foolproof - necessary in my case, and easy - same again, method.

Position the hub with one mounting hole uppermost. Stand the wheel alongside it, also with one hole...
