Xantia Steering Wheel Radio Controls

Unread post by DHallworth »

I managed to break the brittle wiring that connects the buttons on the steering wheel in our Xantia today whilst putting everything back together.

I've look on Citroen Service and have found the part.

It's labelled as number 4 in the diagram but it's not actually issued a part no. on the right hand side column as below.

Anybody got any ideas?

David.

Hi David,

That part is notoriously delicate :(

Most I've seen in spare wheels are broken.

A repair should be possible with care depending on where it's broke.

Given what it does and the fact it moves little in service, I'd be inclined to do a full rewise job using sturdier ribbon cable of the type used in old computers for connecting hard disks and the like.

I didn't want to force it yesterday, but how do you get the switches off the steering wheel to look at replacing the ribbons?

Thanks!

David.

Dave, that is exactly how I broke my ribbon.. removing the switch clusters.. they are kind of snapped in to position, I think you bend a plastic tang and then pull them downwards / or upwards.. but they need a bit of force and when finally they come out, they can come out quick ;) It should be obvious how the switch blocks are held in, when you have the wheel off..

I had a go at fixing mine but I am not to hot with soldering ... In the end I searched for breaking Xant on ebay and got someone to remove some and send them on to me.. think I paid 5-10£

I have sucsessfully repaired a Series 2 Ribbon set with a Temerture controlled Iorn on the lowest setting for the solder..

Ive not got any S2 ones, the buttons DO just push outwards towards the FRONT of the wheel...

S1 sorts are different so incompatible.. If it was a S1 lot, Id most very likely be able to find some...

The ribbons are completely soldered in, even inside the plastic switches directly to the button boards...no plugs used.

I broke the ribbon on mine yesterday whilst changing my steering wheel for an activa leather one, Fixed it with a bit of careful soldering.

Also had to make an adaptor loom for the steering wheel control plug under the cowling, both cars are s2, airbag plug fitted ok but the radio control plug was different.

I am struggling with this problem as well. My radio buttons died when the local garage rewired my ignition switch after the aircon/rear screen contacts burned out. After a lot of hassle, Edwards of Billericay managed to find me the correct replacement, but still no joy. If anyone has any diagnostic procedures, I would be interested to hear of them/
