I don't have knowledge of the Peugeot, but the issue of a loose connection is known with several makes of car.
I doubt the piece of plastic holding the cable to the floor will cause an issue with the air bag light, but an intermittent loose connection in the plug and socket almost certainly will. Check for a good electrical connection within. Look...

The 205 sunroof has got a pressure tank fitted down on the inside footwell on the passenger side. remove the inner panel and you should see a plastic tank looking thing. release the hose, this will deflate the seal so you can at least shut the roof. Seems to me like its pulling a spot of air in from somewhere, when these engines rev by themselves its usualy down to air getting in, but only when the injection pump is Lucas/Rotodiesel, Bosch equiped engines wont do this.
Diesel is very much less volatile than petrol so does not readily evaporate, even when spilled on a hot engine block it can...

more than likely an intermitantly faulty road speed sensor at the back of the gearbox,this is what gives the speedo its reading.the engine ECU also uses infomation from this sensor which would explain the poor running when the speedo cuts out.

306 seat belts

The front seat belts on our 306 are starting to be a little reluctant to wind back into their housings when you get out of the car.
Does anyone have any advice on how to lubricate then without cosmetic (or worse) damage, before we start trapping them in the doors, etc?

I have a 1992 205 that is weeping diesel somewhere mid length and the other has already been shortened an inch as it was split at the end.
As the pipe clips are crimped it looks a case of don't start unless you CAN finish.

If its a 1.9TD it will have a pull type clutch fitted, these are notorious for getting heavy during the later miles.
Same clutch fitted on my Xantia 1.9TD, I had the same problem for a few thousand miles until I got cheesed off with it and changed it, light as a feather now.
As the clutch wears the diaphragm spring changes geometry as it takes up...

For the cars over 2000 to program a new key a pin code is needed. This code is supply with the car to the customers. But as they loss the key they also lose this code too. how did you program the key ? reading your other post i get the impression that you dont have the transponder code,as far as im aware it is not possible to program keys without this code.i dont imagine shorting out 2 ECU pins will bypass the imobiliser (more likely to damage it).does the key light on the dashboard flash when the ignition is...

Don't know where it's coming from, but try pouring water over the boot lid at specific places, colouring the water with food dye. If you don't cover too much of the boot at once, it may give you an idea where the water's coming in. Worked for my 205.

Dismantling Rotodiesel fuel filter primer

I'm trying to dismantle the primer plunger to replace the top seal. I can see a plastic ring just below the rim of the housing the plunger goes into, which butts up to the housing and has several slots around it. Anyone know how I can get the plunger past this, or else remove it so the plunger will come out?

Bad luck there Dai, it gets worse I'm afraid cos' the camshaft always leaves at least two valves partialy open in any position at best, so spinning the engine would cause the pistons to hit them.
Take the rocker cover off and see it the camshaft is still in one piece, if it is try turning the engine by hand only while feeling for compression on...

Hi,
Where abouts on the bulkhead? Drips are almost impossible to locate unless you have the car on a ramp. The fluid finds almost impossible routes sometimes and you may find that the leak is coming from the other side of the engine bay altogether.

In my experience the insurance valuation is usually less than you would value the vehicle (and sometimes a lot less than you were hoping for). But if the vehicle is worth less than £1000 or so to you I have found it better to accept the valuation in anticipation of a quick settlement.

Hi, do the hdi engines have a heat exchanger type oil cooler or a proper oil cooler (like a radiator)?
If the former then these can be problematical as I found out once on a Golf GTI. The casting in the heat exchanger had gone porous causing the oil and water to mix. Strange how water is not contaminating the oil though, I would suspect this to be...

if there is a problem with c/locking & e/windows at the same time the first thing i would check is the wiring/connectors at the door pillars,pull back the rubber sleeve & visualy inspect all the wiring.you may find 1 or more broken wires causing various problems.the locking may be cutting itself off after a few attempts to stop the motors over...

Well, oil is getting burnt somehow !!
If it's getting into the combustion chamber, it will be burned whatever the conditions, so you'd see smoke all the time ( in various degrees ).
You say 'it doesn't use any oil', well, it obviously does, but aparently in very small amounts.
I would check the air intake system, and I would suspect a turbo oil...

Early 1996 406 1.9 DT with air con. Done 120k miles, most journeys being 20 miles on traffic free roads.
Problem is that it emits a large quantity of grey/blue smoke once it has been idling for a couple of minutes and is then driven off, smoke clears within five seconds, there is no smoke at start up or when on the move which seems to discount...

I wish I could help but I have the same problem, I've just bought a P reg 406 without a handbook and my immobiliser is set to a code with 4 numbers all the same, this seems to be common practice with some car dealers .... someone out there must know how to change it.

My Dad mentioned that he required what fluid goes into the shocker to engine mounting on his Peugeot 605 SVDT 2.5 He said that it has a shrader valve on top of it and that he needs to know what it is and what pressure to do it to. Does the cooling system pressurise
Is there oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil
Is the coolant dirty colour i.e. brown signifying that oil might be present
Is there water droplets on the dipstick
Does it use any water if so how much

Ever since buying my 306, I have noticed that the cooling fan seems to work really hard, even in light traffic, it has always kicked in reguarly.
I recently had the fan switch and thermostat replaced - both had melted and stopped the fan from working. I also had the radiator flushed of all the gunky residue that had collected when the engine...

Ok I have never really been getting GOOD fuel consumption in my car. I got about 450 miles to a full tank.
It will do about 100 miles to £10 out on the A roads and I'd imagine less in the town. What can I try to fix this then? It was just serviced.

Well it won't have an automatic hcoke as such, being fuel injected, but of course the injection system will make the car run a bit richer when its cold, like a choke would.
You don't say what size engine what you have in your 306 but on most models the problem you describe is usually caused by a sensor being faulty.

The pulley sits on the end of the crankshaft held in position by a woodruff key. Normally, once the bolt is undone and removed, the pulley pulls away easily. Have you got the bolt undone? You're right - it's better to leave the top mounting in place until the pulley is off.

Had a go at changing my timing belt at the weekend. Got stuck trying to get the crankshaft pulley off. Had my wife in the car holding on the brakes whilst in 4th gear as per Haynes but no joy. Could it be a left hand thread? Haynes manual does not mention this so I was trying to turn it anti-clockwise while looking at it..

I think you will have to run your own cables. I had to this on my zx when I wanted to install rear speakers. theres quite a bit of trim removal necessary, but you should be able to do it within an hour.

The wireing loom that the radio connecting to has a pair of cables for the rear speakers but I can't find out where or if they are actually laid to the rear. 405 fans don't work

the 2 pin brown sensor is the one that controlls the fans,not familiar with the 405 but on the Xantia it is underneath the left hand side headlamp,they dont have fuses in them,its just a small black box a bit bigger than a cigarete packet with a 15 pin black conector on it.have you checked that one of the fans aint siezed ? can you turn them both...

'94 405 GLX TD w/ A/C - bought in March and didn't realise it until the hot weather that the fans don't work. I've seen postings on this subject from a year ago but no solutions. The Haynes manual is no use as the electrical circuits don't show the Bitron unit. A couple of questions

if it is a transponder key then they are expensive to buy and they have to be coded.as far as i know the only way to do this is using the peugeot computer.at least it shows that the secrurity is reasonable.

I need a spare key for my 405 but according to the dealer it will cost close to £90. I thought forget the electronic devices, I can get a plain key cut for a fiver. However, I find that if I use the key in the door the alarm comes on or the door will open but the car is immobilised. Am I being forced by Mr Peugeot to spend this ridiculous amount...

Whether or not this is possible, I couldn't really say, but it would certainly involve a hell of work and a lot of new parts, probably for very little gain. The hubs and bearings are different. Also the wheel cylinders on the drum brakes contain regulating valves. On disc brake models, a load sensitive regulating valve is fitted in the hydraulic...

Rather unlikely. Personally, I'd make sure the air filter was clean, put a double measure of Millers Dieselclean or Diesel Redex in the tank and take the car for a thrashing up a motorway. Make sure the engine is well up to temperature before retesting.

My Pug 306td (97 on p reg with 75K on it) has unexpectedly failed it's MOT on an emissions failure.
The chap behind the counter swore blind that it was the EGR valve that needed to be disconnected.
I was dubious-and checking through the haynes manual it states that their is no info available on this device at time of press!
Does anyone out there...

I've got a 2000, pug 406 break SV. With a lot of electrical problems . One problem is solved with the info on the forum . Had the airbag light on. It's solved by spraying some contact spray on the yellow plugs just below the seats.
Still some problems remain:
- Sidebag light blinks .
- The warning signal that headlights are forgootten to turn of...

No you won’t be able to use any remote with your IR receiver.
The key fobs & receiver are a matched set for security reasons. Replacement fobs are around £70 each from pug.
Don't assume that because the receiver is wired up it is functioning correctly. It could be the receiver is at fault and the original keys/transmitters have been lost and...

on inspecting the jammed electric sunroof on my 405, i've found that the ir remote receiver seems to be wired up and functional. as i've never had a remote transmitter for this car, could i use any old transmitter to work the central locking or is it a peugeot only part?

Jammed sunroof

I would say you have rust in the tracks(happend on my BX, I did not use it much at the time). Try getting some WD40 in the tracks. You may have to remove the glass. If you remove the motor cover & motor, as well as the glass, you may be able to slide the cables back and forth in the tracks and find the problem.

I havn't used the sunroof on my 405 since last summer. Now with the hot weather, I went to open it and I've found that its jammed shut. The motor whirrs but the glass will only budge about 0.5cm up the back to its start position. Took the switch housing off, disconected the link rod and tried winding the roof manually using the allen key provided...

my 95 zx has similar problem which developed all of sudden. This has been put down to wear in the steering rack which causes the inner track rod ends to move about only up and down, but doesnt seem to have caused any side to side movement at the front wheels

My 309 GLD 89 F-reg is very rattly over cobbles & rough roads and the nosie appears to be coming from the front suspension and can easily be felt through the steering column. I fitted new Sachs shockers to it last Autumn and she had new upper strutt bearings in 98. Notice that when I reverse there is a sound like the struts/springs settling but...
