Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

The engine uses less than 1 litre oil between 12,000 mile services
I mostly drive it flat out and occasionally tow a caravan with it.
The only problem I've had with the engine was a knocky injector at 120,000 miles but second hand injectors are now quite cheap for these.
It's also had a new intercooler...

Hi all

I've just replaced the starter motor and it fired up great , now it wont start at all. As i turn the key it clicks and i can here the relays buzz but the engine is not turning over.

my knowledge of an engine is zero, but I have bought this item 190524061185 from e bay, it is supposedly a fuel saving device and the instructions are just to fix it to the main fuel pipes. OK, for a Series 1 maybe take the plugs/sockets plus much harness as practicable.

Other way to check is plug yourrecipient VIN into SC and see what part number the central harness has. Then remove filtering and compare this with speed control cars. Remove your column shroud and see if the brown cruise stalk plug is wrapped in foam and tucked...

Couple of odd questions here.

During an MOT:

Would the garage remove the radiator/expansion bottle cap?

Would they remove the engine cover on an HDi?

This is on a 51 plate 406 2.0HDi 90BHp.

In my experience - No! they never have. But I have discovered in the past a couple of the retaining posts on our '02 HDI have broken. I've cleaned them up and super-glued back again.

There used to be a time when the guy doing the MOT asked when the cambelt was last changed. Don't know whether...

Afternoon, would anyone know which of Peugeot's steering wheels are interchangeable? I have a 405 and would like to know which other model's wheels would fit it. I know 309s and 605s do, whereas 306 ones don't. Do 205 wheels have the same spindle size as well?

They should do (the 205 ones) as its the same wheel or it looks the same. The later 205's with the three spoke matches the later 405's (the few before they had airbags, typically 94 / 95)

This will partly depend on the year of your 405 too. Older shape ones (pre 1993) are different I think too.

Well known weakness/problem. I've had three of them and all three had exactly the same fault! You can disengage the flap/motor from under the bonnet (in the open position) and hey presto, no noise. I believe you get to it under the pollen filter. Can't do it myself but my friendly mechanic always helps me out for £25 a time.

Had one pop this week past - unusual, or a commonplace occurrence?

Most fuses in the board looked original (DAV type). I slotted another 30A unit in, and so far no pop.

Anyone care to share similar - or differing - experiences they may have had?

This is an indication that the motor is working on its limits.
Probably due to dry guide rails.

The fuse should only blow if the motor is stalled for some time.

If 2 motors are fed off the same fuse, it may be a totally different story though.
Then it could be a delay in a functional switch or relay contact set, causing the circuit to overload,...

I'm going to replace the cylinder head gasket on my engine,
I'm under the impression the head will near skimmed as a matter of course...

That's an assumption of mine based on ignorance,

Is this the case ?
Or is the head warping not the usual?

How will I know if it needs skimmed or not?

only have as little as possible skimmed, as the more you have removed you will need to have the valves sunck into the seats,

because there is a minimum depth they can be or they will contact the pistons,

also i belive it is as important to slacken/undo the head bolts in the correct order, as it is torquing them down or re/fitting,

just crack...

ive put a 406 1.9td engine in a talbot express.

i got it runninf thanks to a few folks on here...Thankyou!!

now i drove it today for the first time, garagre and back ( about 2 miles) to fill it with diesel( :shock: bloody price of it :roll: )

then an hour later took it for a drive, reasonably hill went for about 5 miles then ................

My 806 2.0 HDi won't start, the engine is turning on the starter so I expected:

1. No fuel is reaching the engine
2. The immobilizer is active from faulty key, sensor etc.

The fuel pump should prime for 2-3 seconds when the ignition is turned on, but I cant hear it (as I normally can) and when I disconnected the fuel line to the filter while...

I have fitted a reverse sensor kit to my 406 estate (multiplexed :? ) and the only reverse light feed I can find is in the tailgate, the possibility of getting a lead down to the n/s rear corner where the sensor unit is doesn't look promising, where is the control unit for the reversing lights housed?.

Managed it eventually, ran the lead under the weather seal strip down the n/s rear, sleeved it where it went over the sharp edges, cable tied it to the loom and ran it alongside the grommet in the tailgate again with sleeving to protect it - and it works :D

Right time for another daft question from me.

As the MOT is coming up I need to actually sort out the rear fog light that I have been attempting to do on and off for the past couple of months. Now this is nothing complicated, merely needed a new bulb (hopefully).

The problem is with fuse f11/15amp inside glove box compartment of my Peugeot 307 2.0 hdi rapier estate keeps blowing. we are trying whenever we have some spare time to trace this electric short circuit. My nan recently caught a post in her 206 and has asked me to replace the damaged door protector trims and sort out the scuffs/scratches.

It's a 3-door, 52-reg quicksilver.

Servicebox suggests these are the correct trims:

My trusty old 405 has developed a strange fault with it's Bendix abs modulator which runs all the time and can only be stopped by disconnecting the battery. I've disconnected both relays in the box adjacent to the ABS modulator - to no effect!

Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip Andy,
I've disconnected the stop light switch - but the abs modulator still runs!

Interestingly with the stop light switch disconnected and the ignition switched off the modulator starts running as soon as I reconnect the battery (previously it wouldn't run until I started the engine).

Any other ideas?

hi,
I am in the process of buying a 406 hdi 2001...... te guy doesn't seem to know much about it so am going to ask this question on here. On the remote keyfob there is a large button that locks/unlocks the doors, then there is a small button that lights up a little red light on the fob but as far as i could see,didn't seem to actually have a...

I was going to say that my 'Y' reg estate only has one button, press once to open and again to lock, I didn't realise that the small circle was a button, I don't know what its for either. Doesn't mention it in the handbook, mind you it doesn't mention anything about an auxiliary heater - but its got one

Good price, I paid £950 for my estate last...

ive been reading the Haynes manula regarding setting the timing on my xud9

i think i may have upset the timimng when i swapped the pumps from the stock 98 pump to an earlier 306 TD pump, both bosch.#

haynes describes locking the crank / cam & fuel pump pulleys,

as i need to start from scratch, with the 3 wheels locked , this suggests to me this...

That should do it, do lock the crankshft though, I have got away with just marking it several times but I have also got it one tooth out! If you bend a wire coathanger into a starting handle shape you can slide it along the back of the starter and find the locking hole without to much dificulty.

Once you have all the sprockets timed corectly,...

i have my xud9 in my talbot express,
i have the wiring sorted i think, using the 406 glow plug relay.

ive tested and am getting 12 v to the fuel stop solenoid
im getting 12 v to the relay
im getting 12 to the glow plus

all when i turn the ignition key

it turns over and is giving a few resounding chugs with accomanying smoke ( its not on...

Hi
my 2002 hdi has hardly any power when setting off, however it seems to pick up when the revs build ie on turbo, and drives ok when moving?

I read the fault codes and got:
po243 turbo/sup wastegate solenoid A malfunction and
po230 fuel pump primary circuit malfunction

Also when starting from cold it stumbles into life on usually the second...

you need a diagnostic tool that gives you live data for rail pressure and see it you are getting sensible rail pressure.
From memory you might be able to see pressure requested as well as actual pressure. A big discrepency suggests that the ECU is not getting the rail pressure it want.
The same applies to boost pressure.

i want to fit a tach to my XUD9 engine, its not in the 406 it cam from now

i was told to use the w connection on the alternator, but i dont see one
i have two ideas,

there was (I broke it) a sensor which looks like it senses the flywheel, or,
there is a cable leading to one of the injectors,

will either of these produce a signal i could use ?...

anybody have any inclination as to how to wire the glow plug relay?

i have 2 big wires for the plgs and to earth

four couloured wires going into the relay, but i cant find a diagram for it, to retro fit it to my van.

anybody help?

Buddy was telling me that jubilee type clips for the diesel lines in the xud9 arent up to tjob, they cause air leaks in the injection system ,

he suggested getting pliers and clips similiar to the stock ones,

this true or are screw type clips adequate?

can anybody draw me a diagram of fuel lines into my xud9 te engine?

im loosely aware there is a feed in and a return, however i have a few loose ends and im not sure which goes where?

all i have in place is the line from the filter to the pump

Hi I'm after a pinion housing for an '03 partner 1.9d. The rack has a detachable pinion housing, but I belive there are two types ( flAT AND NOT ) Any experts know which vehicles share this rack and how to identify if the pinion is flat or not?

Early (very) and later upper columns vary a bit in the steering wheel too if I remember correctly. As the non multiplexed ones have a nut holding the wheel (with or without airbag) to the column, the multiplexed ones have a bolt.

Hi guys, clutch has just started slipping on my 406, it's not really bad yet and I'm hoping I'll get a bit nearer to the warmer weather before spending and afternoon in the garage but i'll have to do it before long as I use this as my tow barge for my sprint car and it's not going to tow a trailer anywhere as it is.

I've done a few clutches in...

through pulling my 1.9 xud to bits im discovering & learning loads ans a diesel newbie.

next question is turbos.

my engine is 130k and the turbo shaft has a bit of play, and is particularly oily, as is the intrcooler pipework,

in looking at recon turbos theres quite a few listed for the xud9

mine for info is a garret gt1549

apart from fitting...

I have a 406 1.9 TD engine, its an XUD D8A.

it has a bosch fuel pump,

Im trying to put this into another vehicle, but was discussing with a friend bout wirong the fuel pump.

he had a look and suggested it may have an anti theft immobiliser under the plate in the picture.

I though, as a novice to these, that it was lucas pumps, on 2.1s that...

Hi Im trying to put a xud9 td engine into a peugeout j5

the j5 had a push clutch , however the xud9 engine i have has a pull type clutch, can i just fit a j5 clutch kit to the xud flywheel?

the engine is out of a 406

Hi,
I\'m asking on behalf of my neighbour and trying ot help out

Problem is apparently simple: The Radiator fan continues to run after the engine is turned off. Normal behaviour I believe, but normally for a few minutes or so. This one doesn\'t turn off at all and flattened the battery.

She called the AA who diagnosed water in the engine bay...

Hi

My dad has a problem with his 206 HDi SW 1.8 8v...

The car starts and runs, and drives perfectly fine.. However, when the engine is idleing, the engine has an excessing Rocking! so much its rocking the gearlever...

If I lift the revs above 1800 revs or so it smooths out..

I put the Lexia on it and got a Parameter Reading on the injectors...

Hi, my son was servicing the wifes 206 and could not find the fuel filter. I've not had a chance to look for it, so can any kind soul tell us where it is? It's 2005 55plate 1.416v sport. Thanks in advance

If it has one (some do not, most do) it is on the offside rear side, just infront of the fuel tank / wheel arch area.

Lie down and look at the gap along the sill between the tank / wheel and further forward. :)

Looks a bit like this (not my pic just found it)

Only ever fit a plastic bodied filter on a 206. When they were new (around 1998)...

Or lack of it I should say. I have fitted new drums/discs and shoes, the cable seems to be free, and yet you still have to nearly pull the lever out of the floor to get it to hold on a hill - any suggestions?

Done that Malcolm and both sets of shoes appear to be moving OK and handbrake comes right up, didn't take to much notice of the compensator but I think it was OK but I will check again. I did slacken the adjuster off a little as the linkage wasn't returning fully but it does now, the handbrake come up about 3 .

Hi all, anyone know how to get the bulb out of the numberplate light on the tailgate of my 2001 406 estate? Had a quick look, but couldn't see an easy way. Does the inner cover have to come off first? Or can they be got at from outside?

From memory, the actual bulb cover comes off from the outside, you need a tiny terminal type screwdriver or similar to do it, as its easy to break the tags off.

Once its off, I think then you will see two screws or tags holding it in place.

Where can i find the relays for the wipers on my 406? The reason i ask is becase my wipers dont work on fast or intermitant and looking in the box under the bonnet next the the air filter i seem to have a space where 2 relays should be. Also my blower motors just stopped working and all the fuses look ok so think it must be the motor itself thats...

Thanks for your reply Stuart. Iv fixed the heater now, i just wiggled the wire and it works again now. Il try the switch to see if that helps, if not theres one in the local scrap yard.

Wiggling the plug would probably have dislodged a bit of soot or something on the plug to the heater, it'll at least require a bit of WD40 on it and then...

1995 405 diesel wagon, is running fine but noticed a few puddles on the road under the engine, it appears to be diesel and coming from the centre of the underside of the main alloy housing of the Bosch injector pump. More specifically from what looks like an oblong cover plate centrally located on the engine side of the pump main alloy housing....

Hi Jim & Andy. I was able to overcome the cutting out issue with the idle stop adjustment as you both suggested. In doing so there ended up being some clearance at the idle cut out damper contact point so I had to adjust that quite a bit to bring the damper back into play again. All seems to be running well now so I will give it a good run over...

Hi After my wifes 306 mot . advisories were , front shock absorber misting oil .
My question is , should I change both front absorbers . Is it difficult to do ? Are there any special tools needed ?
