207 GTI Engine knocking

Hi my gti seems to have developed a knocking noise at first it thought it must be chain related but after letting my uncle listen to it he insists it isn't chain related and must be something else like pistons or something he says the noise isn't what he would usually expect to hear from a Chain that needs replacing as he repairs chains regularly (he hasn't done a thp though) any ideas what it could be would be appreciated

Hi yes it is knocking all the time it's a 2007 I'm just hoping it's not too bad as it is generally a good car and has covered 50k miles.
It doesn't seemed to have affected the drive no misfiring either so it's a bit odd.

Can you make an audio or video recording of the knocking? It is a bit hard to diagnose without hearing it.

Is the transmission auto or manual?

Knowing what I now know about these engines, a 2007 at 50k could well need a chain.

Ours is a 2007 that needed a chain badly at 60k.

If you take the rocker cover off you'll be able to see the chain and with a long screwdriver you'll be able to see if there's any slack in it.
