Gearbox code

Hi all, im new to the site and in need of some info so though I'd ask the people in the know. Im sure this has come up before so apologies in advance if I've missed any info out there. I've trawled the Web #-o looking for info trying to find out my gearbox code as mines about to give up the ghost. Is there a simple way of me finding this out without having to access the gearbox itself?
Any help appreciated,

I can't help directly but I'm sure that the first thing you'll be asked to do is to post up your VIN number.
