Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Morning all - the car is a S Reg 406 1.9 TD Estate - went to the Mot and it failed on two rear panhard rods, front anti roll bar drop link and front ball joint
I haven't a manual and can't access a piture of the rear suspension or the manual on the web ( and haven't even been under the car yet )

Okay, think this has been solved. Car went back to the garage & they have replaced a sensor (not sure exactly which one :oops: ). This was around 2 weeks ago now & all has been well since. They had also charged up her 'old' battery & decided it was fine. So they took back the 'new battery' & deducted the cost of that from the sensor replacement...

My drivers side works OK.
The passenger side, when operating the drivers switch would go down and OCCASIONALLY not go up.
No problem because it would go up from the passenger side.
Next day or so it was probably OK!!

This has got worse until the passenger side window wont work from either switch. Luckily it is up!!

ive got a 206cc 1.6 on 2006 the esp light on the bash and get message say esp not functioning any idea what it can be been told here module under the passenger seat is there any way to check that is working as i priced up and it over 300 quid found second hand 1 for 75 quid but need to know is the module coded to the car

It was worth mentioning it as although not that common a partly blocked air intake (more common on a diesel but can happen to petrol engines) can really upset it as its struggling to get enough clean air, similar effect to a choked filter.

The crankshaft pulley is a very common cause of a rattle on the HDi.However as your alternator output alters the noise and the lights flicker I would think the auxiliary belt is slipping/juddering due to a faulty tensioner? I`ve known the tensioner pulley to jump up and down on the belt and rattle like a bag of nails.

Thought I might start an incomplete pictorial on the Denso electronically variable suspension. First up, the ECU. Super-hermetically sealed, I reckon this had sterile Japanese air inside when opened - even after being in a twelve hour flood. Plugs are compatible with the Hydractive harness on a Xantia.

a freind of mine hasa just bought as title,

Of course this could relate to any car but specifically it's my 308. As others here have said, the horn on 308's is awful..sounds like a adenoidal sea lion. My old 406 had a proper one, people sure took notice when that blasted out a tune!

Now, having spent quite a few summers in France I know the sound of a French car horn :roll: and I'm certain...

Really just a question of how long said item is supposed to/actually live(s) for!

Modern car manufacturers seem to make some curious claims regarding the life of their products, without actually making any solid predictions regarding true life expectancy.

Some AL4's have met a premature demise as early as 70,000...

Lots of oils say that they are equivalent to LT71141 but the fact is that ZF only recommend the original Esso oil and not anything else. I don't know about Seimens so you need to check that yourself.

Personally I only put the real oil, as specified by ZF in my 4HP20. I won't risk saving £40 on oil to put a gearbox that would effectively right off...

Recently replaced the near side front door window in my 1995 205 TD. When you wind it up (electric) it sits forward and leaves a gap on the left hand side straight edge. Can't find a way to adjust it in Haynes or online. Any hints appreciated.

trying to find a sticking/dead indicator relay - but have the fuse diagram but not relay one :(

can anyone help?

indicators just stopped working - but its not teh fuse (F26 - 15A) hazards gone as well.

aye , was thinking maybe a worn bush - as one shock was totally u/s , might have been that way for a while - and since the bushes are original the extra stress from an empty shock could have worn it out - and now the weight is back off the back its clattering

ive got a van at the moment and its starting and running for a 2-3 mins but after that just cuts out its not taking the throtle very will too ive had to open a injector to get fuel up some times at the rail anyone got any ideas where to start or what to change paul

it runs out of the `in` lead to the coil pack , so i`ll be thinking its an interference suppressor. thank you :D

There should be a sticker on the door edge or door jam - usually driver's side. Are you wanting the RPO number? It is a five digit code on that sticker - from memory below the four letter paint code.

I often see the D9 406 2.0 petrol offered with a 'silver top' engine, and presume this is the later (206 GTI?) engine which they put in around 2000.

Can anyone tell me if this is significantly better than the earlier engine? I find my D8 406 a bit lacking in torque and it'd be nice if the later engine addressed that. Also it seems...

my 406 turbo will sometimes boost and car goes like stink, but most of the time its as if the turbo wastegate is open (its not), are there any vacuum solenoids i should be checking, engine management light is not on, but sometimes will come on and then go off again, but not making a difference to how car runs... its a 1998 model 2.0 8v....cheers

On the way home from work last night the wipers on my 406 started playing up.

They were on position two so constant but not fast then all of a sudden they stopped half way up the windscreen.

I switched them off and then flicked them into the wipe once position and they went for around 10 - 12 wipes and stopped in a random position on the...

I changed the motor in my 406 and it solved the problem completely.

My brother had the same problem on his W reg 306 HDi Meridian, he changed the wiper motor on that and it solved that too! It seems to be a common problem so it's possible you've got another faulty motor!

One of my chums has been having a bit of bother with the clutch on his 106 diesel, to the point where he doesn't really trust it.
Not entirely sure what problems he's having but he's been told it probably needs changing .

This was about 5 months ago , so I'm getting close to the point of saying I'll have a bash and he can pass spanners.

My 206 53 reg 1.4 hdi has suddenly decided to lose both headlights, typical as it's now due an MOT and I didn't have chance to get it in a month previous as usual.
Bulbs are both fine, high beem still works and side lights are ok too. Checked fuses and nothing amiss there. I'm assuming it must be a relay, question is, is this a built in relay or...

Theres a very good chance this is a com2000 fault, they can cuase lots of strange lighting faults like this.
With regards to the relay, on com2000 models the relay is integral to the under bonnet fusebox so replacement would require soldering, i have no idea which one it is as ther is no official documentation on this as its not supposed to be a...

Could anyone enlighten me as to how my 405 plip key operates?

I have a 1995 405 Executive saloon with just the one plip key, and a keypad immobiliser. If I use the plip key remotely to lock the car, and then open it with the key manually, the dashboard light flashes red and the headlights flash and continue to do so even after...

The keyswitch under the bonnet is for the siren only (at least it is on the 106 and 306 so I guess the same) nothing more, the lights etc are still active.

You cannot really lock with plip and unlock with key, unless you have the system disabled. I know how to do this on a 306 but its slightly different on a 405 and I'm not...

I *think* it is at that year (2000 in your signature) , the earlier shape ones pre 97 would come off easily enough. The later ones, your's are probably the round ones instead of the trapezoid shaped ones ? , may need the bumper off.

I'd say pull the wheel arch shield out and see if you can do anything, the offside one will be more difficult due...

I only just discovered what makes these tick.

The car had non-functional headlight adjusters and I assumed they were cable operated (that would be sensible, right?)... Well, amazingly these mongrels are powered by a fairly viscous silicone oil using parallel plungers in the dash controller and the most common (desired) setting is full extension....

Time to hook into things. Dead starter, dead aircon, dodgy wiring, rattly dash. I've finished dismantling; time to start cleaning and reassembling.

The original Valeo starter will be replaced by a fully kitted Xantia PMGR type unit (D6RA661) as they're smaller, 15% gruntier, easier to get bits for and lighter.

I'll have a perve around that area. The only real corrosion I've observed is post-repair; neaside beaver seam above bumper and offside sail panel to forward edge boot opening trimmer. Very small blisters, anyhow. There is some surface deterioration under the master-vac but I'm confident it's not through.

My 406 has the factory fitted radio/cassette with 6CD changer and JBL amp - can't get the radio head to go to CD mode for some reason (tried stalk switch, head switch, re-loading CD deck etc) so unless I have missed something I may need to upgrade the system. The CD deck appears to load the discs then nothing. I particularly like DAB radio...

it is a Sony model, should work with the original headunit.. and will play MP3 cd's.. so instead of a handful of songs per cd, it's more like 150 (x6)

obviously you need your audio to be digital first..

The 306 has decided that it doesn't really like starting anymore. The other day (friday morning) I went to use it and it started on the first turn of the key as usual however it sounded really rough when it started and it sounded as if it was going to cut out (for the first 5 seconds or so). I also noticed some smoke blow past but didn't notice...

Ok thanks. So if the old ones were of good quality then there could be another problem causing them to have a short life.

If you had around 12 volts on them that indicates a problem. The current consumption if they are all working is around 60 amps which will pull the supply voltage down to around 10- 11 volts so that seems to suggest that...

mine has a really bad knock in the front left suspension, but the MOT tester couldn't figure out what is causing it. It only seems to do it at slow speeds and things like dropping off a kerb or possibly steering lock change. It doesn't rattle on bumps. Just fitted a Whitter towbar to my '52 Pug & now looking at installing the towbar wiring. Apart from the large drainage grommet at the bottom of the spare wheel compartment I cannot find another entry point for the cable to go through. I would rather not drill a hole myself so am wondering how others have solved this? All answers...

Under the compressor endcap, I found this spring laid sideways on a felt block. It's in the path between air intake (lower elbow in picture) and compressor vanes.

A one-off? Two compressors dismantled had exactly the same arrangement. Seems an odd way to employ a spring - was there a service document or is it some form...

I swapped my manual 604 for an auto.
The manual may well have been the only manual 604 in the country but that's not much consolation for my dodgy left knee.
I think I might now have the oldest surviving 604 in the country. It has different heater controls and the 504 style mirrors which were only on the first few months production.

I have a 206 xsi and my throttle is done with a drive by wire so the throttle in done by signals or something, Anyway now and again my pedal stops working engine still runs tho revs just go down to 1000 rpm then i turn key off and back on at it will work again for a bit.

Anyone no why its doing it or anyone had the same trouble?

Might be a bad signal from the potentiometer on the pedal itself. Check the plugs are clean / secure on it, given its location in the footwell its subject to mud / moisture etc off footwear.

Decided to do an brake check on the wife's 406 and found to my alarm that the rear calipers were seized, solid! Someone had fitted new discs and pads at some time, but the discs were hardly worn and had a fair bit of rust on them! I sourced a pair of recon calipers and pads from ebay for £115. I discovered a similar problem this week, the bottom slider bolt on the rear left caliper was totally siezed in the off position and the right side was ok to engage and stiffer to release.
I found replacement bolts and gaiters from bigg red for £29 all in.
Some hard work with my brake piston pusher and loads of WD40 got them out and the new one's...

I have the Bougicord ones; they appear original to the car (distributor cap certainly is, and is worn out!) - only the coil lead shows any continuity.

By this, I mean there is not measurable continuity at any ohms range for the other six leads - not even MΩ. Surely this means the leads are stuffed, too?

I`ve replaced the rear axle on my son`s 1996 106 950 cc 3 stud. Got one from a scrappy........believe it came from a 99 saxo ( lable on it ) not a big job to fit. The new axle had new brakes fitted which was a bonus.
60 Pounds and approx 5 hrs work.......The car is worth little but in good shape...this was a good solution. , drop the exhaust, undo...

Ah yes reasonably straightforward if its a straight swap, just the brake pipes / cables etc really, plus inspecting the brakes on the replacement axle or swapping them from the existing one, more work if they are a different make as you'd need to swap backplates too.

Hi,
I just took the stereo out of my Xantia (not standered) to put into a Peugeot 406 estate.
The connector blocks are the same but the stereo won't come on, all it does is take and eject the cd then goes back off.
Does any of the wires on the connector block from the car need to be re-arranged?
Is the wiring on Xantias and 406's the same?...

Its far safer to use a meter or test light to be sure plus you cannot always rely on diagrams being right.

There will be the power 'block' with an earth, a permanent feed, an ignition / accessory feed, an illumination feed (power here when lights are on) and possibly a couple more for accessories such as a phone mute etc.

just had a look for some front discs on Europarts - nearly choked as they are listed at £38 + vat EACH - my old granada was about £20 a pair - is this about right for Peugeot discs or is there somewhere to get a better price\quality.

Hello,
I've been having a bit of a war with the Bitron controlled cooling fans on my 405. I replaced the Bitron ECU and all of the relays were replaced by the previous owner with similar 306 items.

It works now but the fans run when the ignition is off and the engine stone cold, constantly cycling.

Any ideas?

The middle relay (usually) is the overheat one. If its missing they do what they are doing now.

Try finding a 406 one and replacing it or carefully (disconnect battery first as the fans can start at anytime!) remove it and inspect its socket for corrosion.

done the clutch on my 406 today, wot a pig. had hell of a job getting box out and then back in again. tell me do you have to drop the sub frame? on the slave cylinder i've put the pipe back in and the retaining clip now its dripping fluid, have i lost a seal? any idea's?
