I have a C5 which has sat for 12 months because it had most of the classic faults.
1) ESP/ASR not functioning would come up on a run every couple of weeks
2) Anti pollution fault appeared every five minutes.
3) Immobiliser fault would appear every fifth attempt to start.
(Nerve racking when you have to drive on and off ferries regularily!)

Just checking what could cause this as I have had a few problems / changes over the last months.
Bought the car which (bills provided) had all 4 spheres changed and always rode well.
Rear centre sphere has not been changed, but will be. Hydroneumatic 6 sphere setup.

Had a problem with an LHM leak which lost a lot of fluid a while back, fixed now,...

10W/40 Semi Sythetic OK in a Xantia TD?

Picked up some 10W/40 Semi Synth from Aldi a few weeks ago - its made by Gulf.

Handbook says 15W/40 in the -10 - +40 degrees climate - can I run the 10 or will it cause problems.

I generally change oil & filter every 4500/5000 miles anyway. Normally use Mineral 15W/40 - Drivetec or Comma.

Hi Mike,

I know from the C5 the battery cable is dependent on the gearbox, looking on service.citroen.com, it's similar for the S2 xantia, but to answer your question, it doesn't look like they are all the same length:

BATTERY POSITIVE CABLE
5642 F1 LONG 910 Auto gearbox AL4, BVM ML5T
5642 J4 NFP

On the 1.6 Xantia S2 there is 2 extra positive...

Finally got round to finishing van. Filled gearbox with oil, and no noise! Very very happy, can't believe how lucky I have been and nobody who heard it before can believe its the same gearbox. I am going to hunt down a spare gearbox though, just in case. Have found in the past, the best prevention for something breaking is to have a spare!

Might be a dumb ass question: But I need to change my pollen filter for a new one. Looking on Ebay there are various ones for a 2002 C5 (mine is a 16V 2.L Auto) but some say they only fit the HDI, some are for Estates etc.

Surely the pollen filter on the 2002 C5 is the same irrespective of what model/body shape it is? Am I right? I ask cause on...

:cry: C4 threw a strop this afternoon - SWMBO was overtaking a tractor and it dropped into limp mode. It seems to run OK just now (driven gently), but the EML is lit, and it comes up with depollution fault soon after starting. It also chucked up a handbrake fault message for good measure but that may be just because it was in a strop! Nothing...

Try to find a small ratchet tool since there is not much space there and the removal is done in blind folded mode.

Is there a trick to getting the filter out of the lid easily? It came off eventually, but needed a good yank, and would have been better not to have to grab onto and squeeze the old, oil soaked, filter :roll: And the oil still runs everywhere when you take the filter out of the car - or should I have left it to drain for longer?

A long day of car fixing here :lol: Mandrake come round with his V6, so we did:

Xantia V6: O2 sensor, back pressure check, replaced the exhaust from cat back, fitted new seals in the hyd pump.
C4GP: put it on the lexia, was reporting fuel pressure faults, cleared them, which has put the light out, so hopefully with the new fuel filter it will be...

In 20 litre drums but this represents quite good value for the genuine stuff...

I’ve just ordered a drum.

20l is a lot of LT71141 for just one gearbox as it'll do about five changes but if you know friends with them too then it can represent a good group buy. It's even cheaper if you buy two or more drums :)

Hi all,

I seem to have a CD stuck in my radio so I'm going to have to remove it somehow.

Anyway, if I remove the radio from my 03 C8, will it need a code entering when I go to put it back in? And if so how can I find the code as I can't seem to see it written anywhere in the paper work. Don't fancy locking the unit out.

ok a while back i said i had a small pin hole in my pass pipe, i now have fitted a new pass pipe on a citroen c5 2004 2l hdi 110, and now have heavy steering, iv toped the LHM? fluid up to the mark on the resivour and turned the steering 20 times plus to get the air out but have still got a heavy sortish steering, and the pump has a slight hum....

LHM and LDS are compatible from a seal perspective as far as I know. LHM was a mineral oil not unlike very thin engine oil with a few additives (anti-froth etc) with LHM plus being semi-synthetic, and LDS being fully synthetic. Hi everyone, :)

The tailgate window won't unlatch using the switch built into the tailgate wiper housing. The solenoid that releases the catch can be moved manually and the window pops up. I remember reading a long time back that there is no command comming from the small release switch. apparently this is caused by a broken copper 'track' on...

Easiest way is with a Lexia which will check out the switch and the solenoid latch. Failing that you will have to remove the tailgate liner to give you access to the solenoid and switch wiring. Both the switch and the Solenoid wires end up in the BSI so it's not totally impossible that the fault could lie within the BSI again a Lexia is needed for...

Im trying to fit OEM parking sensors on my C8

I have the parking ECU and at the back I have 1 blue plug and 1 18 pin black plug this fits the ECU do not know what blue plug does.

Have trying getting it to work through lexia but must be going wrong some where can anyone help.

By the feel of it and from what i have read on here the clutch cable is just about to go on my synergie its a 1998 2.0 8v petrol, i just wondered if it is possible to identify the gearbox without actually crawling underneath or measuring the cable. It seems like there are three types ,BE3 ML or ME I think it should be BE3 but would be best to know...

It depends on where you get the cable. I had to replace one on Gracie just before Christmas, got it from GSF, and change from £21. Citroen wanted £43.

Where are you based? I have a spare cable (ok, it is for a Xantia HDi 90hp), and if it is suitable, maybe we can sort something out.

AL4 Gearbox - Question relating to it

Hi guys.

I am trying to get a price for an oil change on my AL4 gearbox as I suspect it has never been done. My local garage cannot find anything relating to it making them think it is a sealed unit and therefore not possible to do an oil change on.

Obviously I know from reading on here it IS possible to do the oil change and I will drop them...

I think the oil issue is very different in auto and manual boxes. On the mabnual boxes the biggest problem is bearing failure. Obviously selector forks etc. wear without good lubrication, but most gearboxes I've come accross fail through bearing failure. The usual thing is a slight oil leak, which over a period of months drains the oil to a level...

While out doing other work today I discovered that both my hydraulic pump and pressure regulator appear to be leaking now, the pump significantly so... :evil:

As far as I can tell, its not leaking from either of the two steel output pipes, nor the low pressure inlet pipe, it seems dry around the top of the pump where these pipes are, and no oil...

Well, Citroen Glasgow came to the party and I have my set of new o-ring seals. :) I'm betting its the bottom hex head bolt that's leaking even though I thought the bottom front torx head bolt felt wet. I'll do the lot though if I can - I even have the large seal for the cap on the end of the power steering section!

Xantia V6 squealing radiator fan ?

After coming back from a longish drive today I got out of the car while it was still running and heard what sounds like one of the radiator fan bearings squealing for its life. :evil: I managed to catch this on my phone while it was still doing it:

It was still doing it with the key on, fan running but engine stopped, so it can't be anything...

You could be right, I'll give it a try anyway. I was thinking that a modified socket might be another way to go - just weld a small rod onto it at right angles!

Hi everyone, started car all normal, drove half mile then, it lost power like I was low on fuel pulled over, the engine would run , but was all over the place, would tick over at a 1000 then drop to 100 and back to 1000 up down up down.

This morn replaced fuel filter as it was as old as the car hoping it was that, well the bad news its not....

can anyone tell me if it is possible to renew the alternator brushes on my 1994 xantia 1.9 turbodiesel and if so, are there any problems getting it off that I should be aware of, any help would be greatly appreciated, many thanks

Should be straightforward, there are several suppliers offering pattern parts of varying quality. Be advised that Valeo in particular, are infamous for slip ring wear (you can buy these, too).

Loosening the pulley with a rattle gun is usually best approach (assuming you are replacing the bearings in a precautionary measure).

Does anyone know where to source these parts, which are the curved rails that sit below the small hydraulic pistons? The nylon pads seem to wear out over time and I am hoping the bits might still be available, given the engines were fitted to several other cars. Any leads/suggestions would be much appreciated. Hello Matthew, I have found swedishautoparts list the curved rails and also the hydraulic tensioners. They do not have the straight (anti-lash) guides; you might need to chase one of the Renault Alpine parts suppliers for those if required.

C3 Picasso DPF additive refill

After putting the job off for some weeks, I today set about topping up the additive tank on my C3 Picasso 1.6Hdi 16v. When I bought the car the dealer said that the additive should last for 80k km's, so, with the odometer showing 77800 I reckoned it was about due.
I have had no warnings at all, but expected to find the tank almost empty.

It's VAG group cars I notice smoking the most. A friends PD was regularly serviced and had no engine issues, did loads of mpg. But if booted would impress Batman with its smoke screen.

Hi again I am still having problems with the leaking boost on my 2.2 C5 I have now obtained a blanking plate from ebay and fitted it the engine seems to run a little better with this in place.one thing i havent mentioned in previous posts is that when i was checking the inter cooler pipes for leaks I had the pipe off that goes to the inter cooler...

Hose connectors and internal diameter of pipes

Just bought a couple of connectors (they only sent one but that's another story) for my Xantia hydraulic pump inlet pipe.
It is 8mm internal diameter so I ordered connectors for that, they sent a 7mm internal dia. connector and are trying to tell me that is correct. That is the connector is to fit an 8mm pipe so internal is 7mm ???

C5 blower problems

Dads C5, 2002 series one has overnight developed a fault. The blower fan is stuck on one speed...about 3/4 speed. When you turn the ignition on briefly a couple of the speed fan blade indicators in the pooter display light up then they all go out as if there is no blower running but it is! i.e. fan picture is not blacked out at all.

I was driving my Citroen xantia 2.0 turbo diesel on the M25 and it just died. I don't recall a bang or smoke, it just lost all power. It turns over but will not start. A massive pool of oil formed underneath it so something has gone. It's only done 180 k which is low for a diesel. Don't know what to do.
