10W/40 Semi Sythetic OK in a Xantia TD?

Post by ecohouse1 »

Picked up some 10W/40 Semi Synth from Aldi a few weeks ago - its made by Gulf.

Handbook says 15W/40 in the -10 - +40 degrees climate - can I run the 10 or will it cause problems.

I generally change oil & filter every 4500/5000 miles anyway. Normally use Mineral 15W/40 - Drivetec or Comma.

Cheers

It'd be ok, but it's rather a waste of good oil. I believe it's rather over-specced for the old TD unit.

I'd sell it to someone who has a car like erm, an MX5, that needs some 10W/40 Semi synth and use the money to buy your usual oil and have a few pints/pies/salads/mung beans depending on your preferences :-)

I always use 10W40
The only "bad" thing semi synth and synth may cause is an erroneous flashing of the low oil warning light if you park on a slope :)

10/40 was all I tended to use on most models, simply as it was what was in the dispenser. Ones that specified fully synth got what they asked for obviously but the dealer was supplied with semi 10/40.

The Gulf oil was silly cheap but seemed to match the specs I need. From memory ( it was a fair few weeks ago I got it) it was £12.99 or something. Drivetec in my local factor is around £18 or 19 a gallon - its really gone up.

I think the handbook recommends semi synth as they increased the service interval round then. In my BX TD days it was always mineral changed every 6k. I do mine every c5k to keep the turbo happy and for peace of mind. Its a 10 min job. I pull in after a run I was doing anyway, pop the car on high. Switch off - slip a cat litter tray (empty!) underneath and drain the hot black contents out and remove old filter, while thats happening - put away the shopping etc. Pop back out whip on the drain plug and a new filter half filled with fresh oil and fill up. Write it in the service record. Job done. Anytime I get parts I pick up a filter for the next change.

Notice Asda have a good range of cheap oils. Didn't get a chance to look at them closely but worth a peek next time I am in.
