C8 Ecu

Post by Stekelly »

So I'm about to embark on a bit of an epic journey to undo and fix an absolute cluster F@*k of a job that was done on the sister in laws C8.

May as well start at the beginning. Its a 2.0 HDI auto. The timing belt went in April and went to a family friend (back street mechanic type) . After a few months it eventually came back but had been through another guys garage that was apparently an ex Citroen mechanic back in Poland. There were other issues before it went like the airbag light (my lexia said it was the passenger side dash airbag when I checked it before the TB failure) as well as a couple of other issues like reverse lights not working (and reverse sensors).

I spoke to the Polish guy the week before the car came back and he said it had injector issues and another guy had sorted that. Aswell as that the ECU was apparently borked so the original mechanic got one for it but it was from a C5. The Polish guys mate made it work somehow apparently but the result is that the key is now a 2 button one instead of the 4 button one it went off with (buttons for the rear electric doors now missing) . The remote central locking no longer works with the buttons on the key. It has an ESP fault and the wiring to the back of the ESP button is gone (it was definitely there before cos when the car was first gotten I pushed it and it turned off and on the ESP). It started and drove when it came back (the hazard lights started when the car was started each time so the button had to be pressed to turn them off) but doesn't seem to rev over 3000 . They moved it in the garden the other day and it cut out and now wont restart, showing all sorts of faults . Lights come on when you turn the key but theres no a sound when you try to start it. Twice I got it to turn over but wouldn't start, showing immobiliser fault. Keeps saying put lever to P position wen trying to start even though its already in P. Battery seemed to be nearly dead so I took it out and stuck it on my charger where it still is. I'll stick it back in tomorrow and see what happens.

Theres a couple of C8 Ecu's on ebay so I'm thinking of trying one and seeing does it make a difference with a proper ecu. I'll need to learn about codeing with the Lexia though to try get as much working as possible. Does anyone know would I be best off with an ecu pulled straight from a scrapped C8 or a reconditioned one not yet coded to anything or will it make a difference?

I'm probably missing loads and people are going to think I'm mad for not just setting a match to it but at the end of the day , worst case is the car still doesn't work.

Any help is much appreciate, especially with any ho-to's on coding ecu's, keys, components etc,

Ste

Are you aware that you cant recode a 2nd hand ECU from another car with Lexia ? to use one from a scrapper you need the matching BSI + a transponder key all from the same car.

AH, cheers for that. Would the likes of this do the job? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Citro ... 4abe7ab268" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is there much to coding one?

Presumably they would have changed ecu , matching BSI and used the 2 button key we have now all from whatever car they got it from?

You would need to confirm its the right one by your chassis number. Theres not much to coding them just a few options to set, best way is to go into the configuration of your current ECU & take a note of it's configuration. You also need to match the ECU to the BSI, The big problem here is i assume the previous person has changed the ECU, BSI & key as a set meaning the car will now have an unknown imobiliser code, unless you can get hold of the details of the car the second hand stuff came out of so you can get the code then i dont know how you will be able to code a new ECU or by any chance do you still have the cars original BSI & Key ?

It didn't come back with any other bits that what they put in. Would that ECU in the link, coupled with a new (or recon etc) BSI giving a blank slate, work? Possibly with a brand new key awell? Or will the immobiliser code still be there blocking me?

The ebay ad says its for the DW12 engine which is the 2.2HDi & yours is a DW10 the chances are they are not likely compatible but send the seller your VIN to confirm just in case.
If it is compatible & you had a virgin BSI then there would be no imobiliser code in the car at all so you could make the code whatever you liked then match the ECU to it then program a new key to the BSI.

Cheers wheeler.much appreciated.

Don't suppose you'd have any sort of a guesstimate of what a bsi is likely to cost from Citroen? Havnt seen one on eBay. Are we talking early xantia money or early c6 :-)

More like a mortgage
A quick check on Citroen service prices it at around £280 + vat.

Ok. Resurrecting this as nothing has changed since I originally put it up only now I've got an email from a breaker whos sending me Key-ECU-Transponder-BSI-BSM (copy + pasted from his email) from an identical car hes breaking. Is there anything else I'm going to need or will I be good to go at that? Am I going to need any of the codes from the door jamb from the car the bits come from to get the lexia to let me in?

Cheers.

If possible try to get the chassis number of the car the stuff is coming out of, this will enable you to get the transponder code incase you need to do any key coding etc in the future. There is no way to retrieve the code without specialist equipment unless you get it from the VIN.
PS the BSM (under bonnet fuse box) is not coded to the car so you don't need to fit this when you swap the other stuff, handy to keep as a spare though.

Cheers wheeler. I was on to the guy and theres no issue getting any details I need so I asked for the vin and rpo. I assume I need the rpo and vin from The car it came off so the lexia will connect seeing as everything will basically be from the other one?

So I went and fitted the new ECU, BSI and BSM (there was water ingress on the old one when I inspected it) today Car fired up and drove first time. The remote central locking and rear sliding doors all working off the key again :-) . Theres some smoke coming from underecieved the RPO. the bonnet but not sure if thats due to some oil that was spilled on the block or what, I'll have to investigate further. Theres an esp fault showing ( the button on the dash will turn it on and off when the ignition is on but once the car is started the light comes on and the dash says theres a fault. The wireing for the button was in the back of the dash so I reconnected it) as well as the anitpollution fault thats been there since the car was bought.

So far I havnt recieved the RPO from the seller. When I connected the Lexia it flashed up a VIN and asked was it correct. I'm assuming this is the VIN from the car the new ECU came from? So I have that much. Can I get the RPO from somewhere if I know the VIN?

Other than that things are looking up. although when I took the BSM out there was 4 wires in the loom about 3 inches from one of the plugs that were snipped so I dont know what they are.

As for coding keys and the like, do I need a code or can I get one from the new ECU I put in and the VIN? )EDIT just noticed wheelers comment above about getting it from the VIN, how do I go about it?)

If you have a login for service.citroen.com (can register for free) then you can put the vin in there, and then it's under characteristics. Otherwise post the VIN here and one of us who do will find it for you :)

PM The BIrdman, you'll need to part with a little bit of cash, but he can get you the Confidential code from the VIN.

Cheers Ben. Dropped the Bridman a pm so hopefully should have the relevent code sorted soon. I need to go about swapping the key blade from the 2 button key to the new 4 button one next.

I had to sign up to citroen service again but banged in the Vin and got the following

VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

Vehicle family C8
AS RPO No 10039 U9 1 0663
Warranty Start Date 29/04/2005
OPB 3000
BER e2*98/14*0254*05

Cant for the life of me remember what the format of the RPO should be. Is it the first bit of the "as RPO no " line? ie 10039?

Cheers again
