Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Can anyone tell me if the steering wheel on a 1998/1998 mk1 Xsara 2.0 VTS adjusts for reach as well as up and down?

The ZX before it had up/down and I cant find any info on the web about if it has reach. Are the seats the same as in the ZX 16v as well?

Noises from Xantia

I am considering purchasing a 99 (T) reg Xantia. On the test drive, I noticed that when the steering wheel was turned there was a hissing noise heard (inside the car). Also after getting out of the car and the suspension was settling, there was a rumblind kind of noise.
Is this normal?
If not does anyone know what the noises may be?

This noise is not very likely to be associated with the pressure reegulator as its not in the same circuit. This car will have the twin outlet pump - the majority of the pump feeds the power steering and 2 cylinders feed the pressure regulator, and then the suspension and brakes.

Some of you may remember me saying back in early September that I was driving my 96 Xantia to southern Spain and was concerned about my squealing brakes due to hot weather etc. Well the only time I had this problem was on the spiral roads in Mijas. it is the air conditioning and the fan that is affected and more recently, the rear heater button is intermittently not working
The interior fan and rear window demister not working is caused by an intermittent contact in the ignition switch.
A relay has to be installed to bypass the ignition switch.

Just recently, I've started having problems with the electrics on my 'M' reg 16v Xantia.

The cigar lighter fails to work at all - a continuity check suggests that there is no earth, although the leads coming off the back of the lighter socket are fine (i.e. still attached).

Secondly, around the same time, the heater fan has started to work only...

Many thanks. I had seen the posts about the ignition switch, but wasn't sure whether the cigar lighter could indicate something else.

Having searched the postings further, it appears that the main earthing points are underneath and behind the battery - is this correct? If so, I'll check for a poor earth here for the lighter.

zx td engine mounts

The gearbox mount on my ZX TD is for want of a better word mullered. I've yet to own an xud engined car without the dreaded thrashed mount.

My question is, can the mount be changed in situ? I've heard of people taking the mounting off and bashing it out in a vice, but this seems a little long winded to me. is there a quicker way :)

Did it on my BX TD. Cut through outer steel ring on bush with a hacksaw, then punched the mount out without too much trouble or damage. I'd put the new one in the deep freeze overnight to shrink it slightly, put a dab of grease round the edge and punched it again without much trouble.

Make sure there's a lead in (bevelled edge) on the new one...

Would be nice to get some feedback on what is the better engine,

I have recently purchased a N-reg 605 which suffered cambelt failure.
I have a choice of buying a P-reg Citroen XM 2.1TD engine which has covered 73k for £200
or a K-reg Peugeot 605 2.1TD engine which has covered 82k for £225....

Leakdown test would be next to see if the HG is leaking between cylinders and can be a bit more precise than a compo test. Otherwise I think you can have your coolant analysed for exhaust gases but that's a bit extreme! To be honest, fluid level rising when you rev it is normal and has done it on most car's I've had. Other symptoms of a duff HG...

strange creaking noise on front brakes

Hi all

need some advice

on my cit zx driver side when i break i can hear a creaking noise loud enough to hear inside of the car and outside, ive changed pads and disc but noise is still there, doesnt happen first thing in the morning but soon after its all warmed up noise appears?

any ideas ? or is the a problem with the caliper itself.

Hi guys, just moved so haven't got the room to work on my zx ne more :cry: , its a 98 1.4i needing a new clutch and i've got all the parts. Have been quoted between 3 and 5.5 hours labour to sort it, one clown even tried to tell me its an engine out job before i told him to do one.

shoudn't take any more time than that if your used to doing it

get hold of the tools, get a manual and get a friend to help out

and do it over a weekend if you have a drive (the engine does not have to come out)

and you can drive it on monday with a big :D on your face knowing that you did it yourself :D

I suppose I should be grateful that it's the only thing that my 306 failed on, but I can't help but be p***ed off that I'm going to have to do the job twice - both outer boots are split :( :x

Hi all,

Constant squeeking from the engine area, so I pulled over to take a look. The crankshaft pulley is loose.

I'm ready to take the pulley off, but the bolt won't shift.

Is a left or right handed thread? Where can I get a replacement?

What damage would it have done (seems to be quite a lot of oil around it and the bottom of the engine)?...

Hi, yes you are right. Luckily my local friendly breakers will take the pulley off for me, so I will go and collect today.

I'm not sure where the oil is leaking from, so will change the oil seals as you suggest.

I need to get the code for my radio and therefore have to remove the radio from the dash to get the serial number. The car is a 95 TD VSX.

Any clues on where to put the screwdriver/mallet first?

Had rear spheres replaced along with anti sink. rear is now un damped like worn shockers. ALso LHM level indicator appears not to function. On avisual inspection of LHM tank how much should be in it? HELP

hello

I have a problem with my cars heater fan. It has stopped working and so the fan will no longer kick in. Prior to this the fan was only working on full or low and none of the intermediate settings or auto.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

Its not to difficult to change the transistors if you are handy with a drill and soldering iron. You will need two PNP, T03 type transistors rated at 15 amps or more, alternativly you could just fit a secondhand blower.

Should be a straightforward job; the rocker cover's only held on by a couple of bolts. Don't over-tighten them though as they have a tendency to shear :roll: :shock: :D

Don't let too much dirt and scuzz get in the engine while the cover's off (obviously) and it might be an idea to take the opportunity to clean the cover and head (if it's dirty)...

Zx TD Bad starting

when she starts it first thing in the morning it takes a good few seconds

on the starter together with a lot of chugging :(

it olny starts first time if you put your foot on the accelerator pedal

while turning it over then it comes to life in a big cloud of smoke :?

Last night I decided to buy some Glow Plugs as for a few weeks its been doing the big cloud of white smoke at start up when standing over night or during the day at work, glad i did - this morning was the first time it took a few seconds twice to get her started but not worryingly bad though.....its great cos its at pretty much the same mileage...

From my fiddling with BX chairs and and rear squabs, I know that the frames will be a one-piece construction, which then is covered with the cushion material.

This means you have to figure out how the whole chair is constructed and then do this backwards until you have access to broken parts of the inner frame.

The small plastic arm on the rear height adjuster (i hope that describes it) is detached at the socket end and it won't reach the ball connection. The rod that the plastic arm is connected to doesn't want to move although I've only used hand force. As a result the rear suspension does...

Slightly off the point of the original post but as dedicated Citroen owners we have to be careful about applying the its not worth spending more on the car than it is worth logic. With the price of diesel these days just filling the tank on our old Xantia probably doubles (or trebles) its value.

xantia rear suspension

My 94' Dimension TD has got very hard on the rear.On start up it seems slow to level off.The rear seems to maintain it's height (possibly a touch lower on the rear but the front does drop (not fully) with engine off.We seem to have to sit waiting for it to level before we drive off.Also when I hitch the caravan on it seems too high for the van...

If the car will still move to the high setting front and rear when you move the height set lever in the car then its likely to be the rear spheres. Did them on our '95 TD last weekend. What a difference, mind you one had obviously ruptured.

I have a 94 2.0l Xantia, the problem is that the heater does not blow hot air. There is a screeching noise from behind the dash which i suppose is the drive to the control flap within in the box, i have checked the drive motor on the lower flap and all ok. The heater motor works fine high an d low speed as normal. Can someone confirm that there is...

xsara problems!

Had many problems with my 2001 xsara which most have been fixed. My plip key no longer works and needs programming back in. Any ideas how much it will cost?
Also, how the bleeding hell do you change the sidelights/headlights easily? Both my sidelights have now gone so i need to replace them sharpish. It took me three hours to change the headlight,...

xantia reservoir overflow

MY 97 Xantia leaked htm fluid overnight. Had a new pipe, then valve to power streering pump. Since then it has overflowed, while stationary, from the htm reservoir. Could this be air in the system? OR WHAT?

This has been reported before with aftermarket cables. Try filing a mm or two off the end of the nipple on the cable. If the clip was original (black?) then it was on borrowed time anyway, the new (white - or is it the other way around?) are supposed to be stronger. If you've had the whole clutch replaced it shouldn't go again for another 80k...

Lubing the clutch cable end and linkages is an important part of the service schedule - looks like yours hadn't been done for a while. I suggest that you grease it properly to ensure long-term smoothness.

This has not been a good last few weeks for my Xantia. This morning we found the passenger footwell storing quite a large quantity of water. It may well have been coming in for a while but today is the first time I have had a passenger for a while. Its definately fresh water and presumably the downpours of the last few days have found a way in....

At least this one was fairly easy to solve. I played a hose on the screen last night and sure enough the water was going under the scuttle trim into the heater air inlet. Removing and resealing the trim with silicone has cured it. Thanks for the advice lads.

Maybe someone can help me with yet another problem on my 2001 Xantia Hdi. This has been a really bad and expensive month for it. Sometimes I get a distinct ticking noise from the front of the car usually after running for a few miles and then stopping at traffic lights or the like. The best way I can describe the noise is like an old SU fuel...

Thanks Neil. I'm fairly certain that you are right as the symtoms you describe are exactly what I'm getting. As you say it sounds like under the bonnet but I have lifted the rear seat etc when it has done it and the pump sounds like its buzzing. My next question is how long dare I ignore it as it currently does not seem to be causing problems and...

With thanks to a suggestion by Peter.N. I'm hoping to crack an ABS problem I'm encountering at the moment on my 2.0i VSX saloon.

To recap for anyone that hasn't read another thread - over 15mph the light comes on and stays on until I restart the car.

I've checked the resistance through the ABS ECU feed pins and the four sensors read correctly....

Yes I think it is the number of teeth that makes the difference, only when I fitted the wrong drive shaft my ABS packed up altogether. I am sure someone will be able to tell you how to identfy the correct one. I hope I was right. :(

They do list it for the BX, its under engine & gearbox mountings. They call it by a bit of a silly name, though- its referred to as the 'disc'....presumeably because its round!!

Eurocarparts do it for the BX and the Xantia, and its the same stock number, so I don't know why GSF don't list it for the Xantia... AND they give it a more sensible...

Hi all, i've finally gone and done it and bought my dream BX, a GTi 4x4.

The only problem i've got with it is a tendancy for it to hunt between 500 and 1000rpm at idle. It does this constantly, up and down. Obviously at 500rpm the car is viberating. Under normal use the car is fine

Remove the hose from where it comes out of the rear arm and poke a paper clip into the hole. It will be clogged up.
If you can remove the part that is stuck to the arm, soak it in hot water with BiCard of soda in and the poke a wire into the hole at the end. The small holes always get blocked and a needle poked into the holes should clear them....

Ok i had a bit of time today and remembered to look at this.
After removing the black plastic cap (one with the nozzel on it) i tested if water comes out of the hole in the wiper arm spinndel, it did, it shoots about 2 meters up into the air, so plenty of pressure there then.

Anyone know if a late model ZX steering wheel (with airbag) is interchangeable with any other model of Citroen, paticularly the Saxo?

Mine is pretty worn out at 70K - so are all the others I have seen at scrappies. They don't seem to have lasted as well as the earlier two-spoke design. I'd like to replace it and there are plenty of Saxo wheels...

Hi all, I've just bought a ZX TD and it has a problem. The steering jams when winding on right lock and needs excessive force to get past this point. I've a suspicion the PAS ram is at fault and due to the fact that this is quite a pricey item I'd like the opinions of those in the know. :)

Hi all
I replaced all the bulbs in my instrument panel after swapping in a proper temp gauge for the warning lights on the TZD a few weeks ago. Everything worked fine except the fuel gauge - it was intermittently jumping around and sometimes dropped right to the bottom and stayed there - but it had been doing that for over a year, so didn't worry...

im not sure of the cost,also i would think if the tank is a diferant shape the sender will calibrated diferantly,but its worth asking your dealer if they have the same part number

The problem is how do I find the duff sensor that's breaking out at speed as when I undo the connectors to get a reading it resets the ECU and the pins out of the sensors...

I was going to sell my BX but it looks like ive got some work to do first- The oil usage seems to have stopped being so dramatic but I have another problem. Yep I was chuffed by that result. Another worry is the rear arm bearings- A Cit specialist thought the rear wheels looked like they tow in but the arm bearing were replaced at about 11000 miles I think so I dont see why they would have gone again- There is no play in the arm as I have tried pushing and pulling on the wheel etcand no groans or odd...
