Zx TD Bad starting

Post by classic2cv »

my better half has a Zx TD

when she starts it first thing in the morning it takes a good few seconds

on the starter together with a lot of chugging :(

it olny starts first time if you put your foot on the accelerator pedal

while turning it over then it comes to life in a big cloud of smoke :?

do we need new glow pulgs or is it something else

after the first start it's fine for the rest of the day :)

Use the search function (top) and put in TD or D or ZX poor staring / wont start etc - various soloutions have been covered till the cows come home.

Likely culprits are:

Knackered glowplug(s)

Air Leak

Clogged Filter (fuel & Air)

Good luck - I had a problem on my NA ZX a year or three back - was an air leak in a pipe running under the CAV pump. New rubber & some silicone cured it.

My money on this one would be glowplugs.

Hi Curtis (at a guess!)

Sounds like glowplugs to me. Next time you do a cold start, try turning the ignition back off and giving the plugs a second blast before starting the engine to see if that changes things but ultimately, they probably need doing. Weren't too expensive when I changed them on my Pug with the same engine.

If it starts up on only 2 or 3 cylinders and runs rough for a few seconds, sure sign of glow plugs, If it takes a lot of turning over and then starts on all 4, could be failure of the glow plug relay or even all 4 glow plugs, but thats unlikely.

Last night I decided to buy some Glow Plugs as for a few weeks its been doing the big cloud of white smoke at start up when standing over night or during the day at work, glad i did - this morning was the first time it took a few seconds "twice" to get her started but not worryingly bad though.....its great cos its at pretty much the same mileage the ZX was when i needed to change the glow plugs on that...so hopefully things will be similar
