Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I dont know much about Rover deisels (that he refers to) , but its a 2 litre and is similar to XU engines regarding injection.. ie. its not common rail and not direct, so this guy is wrong, or right?

Yep, it was the rust that really killed Rover. My last British car was a K plate Metro. Great car, looked great, great suspension, great handling, sweetest engine on the planet but shocking paintwork that had the arches rusting out at 4 years old. Apart from the rust, the cars were impossible to fault but rust is rust. A pal of mine had an N plate...

Would anyone be interested in placing bets (sportsman or cash) on what will happen after I install Nitrous Oxide in my car (if it last that long!)?

The car is not in the best of shape and I don't even know when the cambelt was last changed so it wouldn't surprise if something major failed.

Having said that, I've been thrashing the car and upping...

I thought I'd post a (shameless!) link to my website which shows my Peugeot 205 project. Its based on a base model shell (Because thats what I had at the time!)

I'm using an engine from a 1.6 106 Rallye (TU5J2, 105bhp) which is using Jenvey SF throttle bodies, custom made inlet manifold and a completely new right hand mount to clear the manifold....

Yes, if done properly. A lot of so called tuners will do an awful job. Its very easy to lose flow if doing a bad job on these heads.

Chaps, I have offered to do this for someone, I have done a few TD swaps but not for a couple of years..

My understanding is, all XU9TD lumps are indentical, from 405's ZX's to Xantias to 406's etc

The chap wants to keep all of his ancilleries, which work fine, including the Bosch immobolised Fuel pump. I realise there is a timing issue with...

Has anyone else noticed how both sidelights produce one single, centred, perfect ring of light on a wall that reduces in size the closer you get to the wall? Or is it particular to just mine? I've never seen that before on any car I've owned and can't help wondering if it's intentional for a purpose.

I was told when I was young that if a hard and soft metal are rubbing together, the soft metal will wear down the hard one.
Is that actually the case?

Most solid bearings are made of soft metals, that way they wear out first and can be replaced..

As a lad, I replaced dozens of white metal big end shell bearings but never had to have the crankshafts reground. and they used phosphor bronze sleeves in the bores of oxygen compressors when I worked on them.. Sooo......

I think Jim got caught in a loop with the green car, he looked it over well, began walking away but soon veered back round towards it.... several times. There was obviously some serious gravity forces around that car that affected him :lol: I think it was the price that eventually broke the hypnotism.

Just been browsing a Jaguar Forum (we have an XJ-S for a bit of fun!) and caught a generic thread about Top 50 worst cars . It seemed to evolve into a French bashing session - mostly by X-type diesel company car drivers and S type diesel owners...who seem to have no idea how much...

CKD units are assembled under license at assembly sites.

- Bursa (Turkey) - Casablanca (Morocco)

- Kaduna (Nigeria) - Tehran (Iran)

Well it appears they are still manufactured in France and supplied to Saipa in a CKD form for them to assemble.

Cars in CKD form are like flat pack furniture, a kit of parts.

Can anyone shine some light. I have a 2000 2litre hdi 406. I understand that it cant run on SVO due to the weak pump at the tank but it must be possible to run a diesel veggie mix to thin it down. Has anyone tried and what ratio of mix works.

I remember reading somewhere (quite possibly here, maybe the previous thread, but not checked it for a while now, so i don't remember) that it's easier to take a wheel of a hydraulic car?

Here is my plan (maybe someone mentioned it before too, but i've been fine-tuning it)...

1. Get clamped
2. Get in the car, start the engine, raise suspension...

My estates paint has seen better days, and is very dull.

Does anyone know of a good polish that will bring this up again? T-Cut is the traditional favourite, but was wondering if there were any good, modern polishes on the market for such a thing.

As an alternative to T cut, I have been using Farecla G3 compound which I find much easier to use.

According to the guy in the paint factors I use G3 is a much better product on modern paints as it is a more up to date formula than T cut which apparently has never changed since it was first on the market.

For me G3 wins hands down!

I don't know if you guys are aware of the existence of this, but it contains a lot of general technical info that is often quite interesting.
Being based 'downunder' it's more into test drives etc of Riceboxes and Yank Tanks, although you still get the occasional French car report, but still makes a good read and is a popular birthday/Christmas...

I'm just testing a new method of hosting pictures one here. I'm using my own Internet Information Server on the uplink side of my broadband. This is, I think, only running 256K so speed may be an issue.

Two images are hosted. One of 30k and the second, the Lucas pump, of 116K

Colin, as Anders said, You need a web server to do it and you can use any of the free ones like photobucket, imageshack and the like although they're a lot of bother and a bit slow...

I've found out that Lovekyn's of Kingston have closed. I bought my Saxo there and as part of the package was a lifetime of free MOTs. Does anybody have any ideas what will happen to this?

Also does anyone know why they closed? They were a really nice dealer and will be sadly missed.

Better still go to a council run mot station, they don’t do repairs and are totally fair-if it fails then it is genuine. I have used Leicester city councils’ own station for three years and they have been excellent, infact just passed my xantia on Thursday with no advisories- a lovely 13 months MOT :D

Due to various financial difficulties, I am currently faced with the decision of whether or not to insure the car for another year or to pay for rent, bills and food for the next month or so.

If I leave the car without insurance for a month or two will I lose the no claims bonus that I have currently accrued?

Aren't they for students? I remember they were cheap for student insurance in my college days but as soon as you got a proper job the premiums shot though the roof.

Yes, primarily they are, but then I am one. Although that may explain the high premium as they have me down as a graduate within 6 months on last years...

Diesel - or heating oil - are spread out all over the country in large home-tanks, either inside a garage, cellar or outside in free air.
It wont ignite as easy as petrol, but once ignited it burns as well as petrol.

But strictly speaken I believe the restrictions on automotive fuel are valid for both derv & petrol.

Just out of curiousty.

They seem to be more time consuming to fix, a lot more messy/complicated to fix and are less reliable and you cant have a quick reasonable glance to see the condition of them.

So whats the reason why disc brakes were never used for the rear of cars, although they are now to a certain extent. Why wouldnt they use them, from...

Pre-MOT check of the ZX last night. It's only done 7k miles since the last MOT, and only 82k total - last year it needed NSF track rod end and bottom ball joint and NSR damper as the bush was shot. Even after resurfacing roads in the country, it doesn't mean they'll be safe.
Many roads use a substance (which I really can't remember it's name) which in hot weather acts like ice.
Councils know about this but have ignored it, I think in Eire it's only allowed on roads with 30mph speed limits.

As most of you are aware it is now legal for us to use cooking oil in our cars* to power them and get that lovely frying pan smell (always a crowed puller)

I have a 7 month old baby and have a normal car seat for her that the seat belt links into runners on the top and also the diagnal of the seat belt goes around the back of the car seat through guides.
God bless Citroen that this seat fits the AX, Saxo, a Picasso and a Pug 306 and even a Vauxhall MPV.

How do you insert a textstring to display with the enlarged image, clicking on the thumbnail ?
Any advice appreciated :wink:

EDIT : can not be done as its the browser that is called as the picture viewer. Text must be inserted into the image beforehand.

I don't have ABS, and I'm fully aware that I won't be able to brake to the same standard, however I don't have the money to risk a car with ABS going wrong as some of the 405s seem to, my parent's one for instance could have cost them nearly £2000 when they first got it ,thankfully was under warranty though.

My AX I got £175 from Admiral inc business cover. In fact they lowered it from the renewal quote when I rang to add business cover in.

The Saxo I've stuck with M&S as you get the full breakdown cover included, and that was £250ish.

Both have £250 excesses.
