Hello John, sometimes you need to heat soak the alloy casting to get the interference fit sealant used on the bearing outer race to release the bearing. I do have a small lipped brass drift that can just about get on to the outer bearing race and usually find once the tension is broken, the bearing comes out easily.
Failing that, a shock loading (Big hammer!) on the drive shaft usually dislodges them. Never seems to wreck the bearing. Have you got a dead blow hammer?

hi Malcolm, hmm.. even with the box out on the floor and all pressure off the shaft, it's not budging. guess I will have to leave it as it is, and put the gearbox and driveshaft onto the new engine.
If the tri axle ends seem all to be ok and not falling apart, can I just mesh the two ends together, add grease and not worry about it ?

well 90 kilo's of autobox was thrown into my dear xantia and duly taken to a gearbox specialist and driveshaft is now free to go it's own way
a big hammer seemed to be enough i tried many things including hanging the box off a crane (by driveshaft) and adding to it's weight with my hammer to no avail
6 hours to remove a few splines... gutted
many times I have done this, a few mins max,
...but this one does not have the rubber outer seal which I condemed in the past as being pointless.......... the one tthat stops rust?
