Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

ahem, ahem, i think you are doing well getting a 11 year old bx up to 5500rpm. it is not a new car you know. ytou will only kill it by this. it is like a 70 year old guy trying to do the 100 meters in 10 seconds. 5500 sounds good to me....

Got an annoying problem, my BX 16V -90 won't rev more than 6000rpm.
I've changed the HT leads the, rotor and the distributor with no luck at all.
I can also see some oil leaking into the ditributor cap from the axle that the rotor sits on, can this effect the ignition so that the car can't rev more than 6000rpm???

I would be having a look at possibly three things as regards the idling.
Firstly the easy option; air leak on the intake side either where the plenum is fitted to the head or check out around (& under) same for split or leaking hoses etc. A piece of plastic hose held to the ear acts like a doctors stethoscope & if that is not conclusive, shaving...

I have a couple of minor problems. The first is that the engine has a habit of stalling quite frequently at road junctions and the like. Tick over normally is quite fast at 1000rpm.
The second is the oil pressure gauge. It often only works after revving the car to over 3000rpm. Sometimes it doesn't work at all for several days. Any ideas?

Yes Hanyes (the muppets) have got it wrong. I did this a few weeks ago and almost destroyed the back of the panels trying to do what the Haynes manual said!

If your idle is eratic then the idle stabiliser may be faulty. If stable then suggest idle speed too low or possibly your power steering pump or something else driven off the engine is putting a higher than normal load on at low revs causing it to cut out.

If all this work was done very recently, then they probably just need time to bed in. You could try driving a mile or so with the brakes on to speed this process up, although don't tell anyone I said so as this is not recommended. Other than that, the fluid may need changing.

I don't know who makes Citroen shock absorbers, but would be happy with Sachs - they have a long association with rallying. Depends what you're looking for.
Are you looking for adjustable or uprated shocks, or standard replacements? A motor factor/specialist can still probably offer these at a price competitive to original citroen parts.

My BX TD has failed 12K early. I read that cambelt failures in XU engines are terminal. IS this true?
Is there a (quick) easy inspection I can do rather than fit a new belt to try it out?
I understand that oilleaks at tehy cambelt end of the ngine may have contaminated & weakened the belt. Be warned!

Interesting. Probably the best bet is to get the car on a 2 poster ramp with all wheels off the ground to allow you to check properly for wear in subframe mounts, whether in fact the exhaust is loose etc. I wonder whether you may have wear in the rear arm bearings on the offside, has the ZX done alot of miles?

I had the same problem and looked at everything. It is almost certainly the driver's door locking mechanism that is duff. It could be the passenger door, but it is most likely to be the driver's. Change the assembly - you will have to get from Citroen or a scrapyard. About £50 altogether from Citroen.

Got a big problem, my car won't start due to that the fuelpump doesn't work correctly.
It does work when I connect it to the battery directly but when I connect via the leads, it just won't work.

There is a lack of data on the current V6 engine - so here are a few discoveries .
a) The dip stick for the Auto gearbox is hidden under the air filter. The filter house simply lifts up without removing anything - and there is the dipstick/filler. Tie it to the bonnet with some cord.

There is only one thermostat available for Xantia 19TD, Citroen ref 1338 39.
I would check that your 'stat is not jambed open. Also check that the system has not got any air in it, and that even if the heater control is fully on, it is actually pulling the cable the opens the heater valve fully open!

Is your Xantia the sort with the service indicators, and the digital mileometer? If so, I believe that you can reset the service interval without a code reader. I have a Berlingo Multispace that uses that same system, in in my owners handbook, it actually tells you how to do it!

You should have a constant 12v supply to the radio for the memory backup. Do you lose your saved radio stations too? If so, sounds like the supply is faulty. If not, I would say you have a faulty radio.

Interesting. I had this problem on a 94 ZX too. Does your car have alloy wheels? My theory was that either the wheels have become a bit out of shape over the miles, and that air leaked past the seal at the rim, and someone else suggested that the alloy gets a bit porous over the passage of time.

My ZX Volcane (2.0, 95K on the clock) is whistling/squealing now and again, sometimes under cornering and always under braking.
I replaced the front bushes 30000 ago and pads are checked/changed regularly.
Is it bearings? Is it discs? CVs? Help!

Are you sure all the turbo hoses are secured properly? They're not much fun to get to... My 163,000 miler also has traces of oil in the pipework; I don't think this necessarily means there is a turbo fault.

The turbo on my ZX TD is now whistling strongly and there are traces of oil in the intercooler. How difficult is it to replace the turbo and where can I get a good new/remanufactured turbo.

Xantia Locking Fuel cap Problem

Ok, tricky one. Is your Xantia the sort whereby the fuel flap itself is locked via the central locking? i.e. when you lock the doors it locks the flap too?.Or do you have to use the key to unlock the fuel filler cap?
Please advise, and I'll see if I can assist.

ZX Wiring Loom - Help

The radio in my ZX stopped working with a small bang. When I took it out to investigate I diiscovered that someone has been having fun with the wiring from the fusebox to the back of the radio. There is sellotape, insulation tape and various connectors that are not meant to be there and the ISO's have been cut off. Is it easiest to just replace...

Xantia CV Joint

I would get this checked carefully before proceeding further.
If the CV joint was worn, you would get a clicking noise when you were turning. Its not possible to buy just the joint for a Xantia- its a complete shaft.
I would also get the bottom balljoint, and front arm bushes checked out before you proceed.

My xantia has developed a noise on the front left side when I am in a high gear it seems to rattle unless I am accelerating, also it clonks when turning and I have also noticed that the car seems to become unstable on a left hand bend (as if the road is icy) it is quite cary when this happens. I am told it culd be a CV joint or a wheel bearing...

Its sounds like that there is a problem with your starter motor, the soleniod may be sticking occasionally by the sound of things

My 91 Ax GT Starts sometimes, sometimes slow. Other times i turn the key, hear the switch behind the dash as normal, but nothing happens. Ive replaced the battery with a heavy duty one, it worked for a while, then stopped working. If i leave the car for a couple of hours it works fine.

Rear Arm Bearings On a Xantia 1.9TD SX

It is almost certain that the rear arm bearings require replacement, I would assume that the car has covered a fair mileage.The bearings (2 per arm) wear because they are so small in relation to the weight and movement that they have to cope with.

I noticed that both inner edges of the rear tyres had gone bald, and when talking to Citroen, they told me it was most likely to be the bearings, and to check if the wheels were leaning in at the top and out at the...

Neil,
Have you checked out the linkages which go from each of the front struts to the anti-roll bar? There are joints at the end of these linkages and even with a small amount of wear in them it sounds if the front of the car is going to come off! You can certainly feel the knocks through the floor pan.

I thought that alll Xantia petrols had the diagnostic socket under the steering wheel, inside the car. have a look, there should be a small flap you remove. I'm not sure if your code reader will plug into it though, is a large multipin connection..............

TD ZX Headlights

I too had a 94 ZX TD, and the headlights were really good, but got worse as the car got older. What I found was that the silvering inside the headlamp units had become dull and pitted, and this was restricting light output. I eventually replaced one of them as it was so bad. If the chassis is indeed new, and is not bent, or wrongly manufactured, I would suggest that the front suspension heights were set too low when the chassis was changed. If it is the Alternator, the noise should be present all the time. Check the boots on the universal joints(beside the wheel)it may be split.

i have recently noticed a speed related noise from the front drivers side of the vehicle when turning slightly to the left.
the noise is very reminiscent of a sick petrol station compressor and sometimes causes a vibration in the steering wheel.

My ZX is now my own personal sauna, there is a smell of anti freeze and the bottom of the heater is wet. I have tried to fix the leak with rad weld, but without success. Is it the heater matrix and if so how difficult is it to replace. Any help would be appreciated.
