It's easy to be tempted but all it takes is 1 'downside' and it's not worth it.
A svo/diesel mix is hard to achieve - just pouring it in the tank isn't a good way.
It will put added strain on the fuel pump - how much is a replacement if it breaks?
You are still meant to pay duty on the veg oil, wipes out most of the savings if you do, runs a risk of being fined if you don't
Injectors etc may wear more quickly, svo leaves an acidic residue.
one cold morning it your car may not start.

Vegetable oil is not all its cracked up to be, if you're paying the duty its really not worth the hassle.
If Customs and Excise don't bother you, then you'd be better on Red Diesel. It will run as is on a TD, and a sight better than the rubbish ULSD we get in the UK. Stick a reasonable proportion of STP Diesel Treatment in it and your diesel will pull like never before!
Beware if you get caught you will more than likely lose your car, and/or recieve a heavy fine. Howver, I've worked in the Agricultural industry for many years and park my cars not 10 yards away from a 10,000 litre tank of the stuff and I've never been bothered by C+E.

I've heard that people who do this warm up on normal diesel then use some kind of heat-exchanger to heat the veggie oil
to around 60 degrees. If you don't do this, as mipster points out
you apparently have trouble with the injectors, and/or fuel pump.

I think it's hotter is better - I think that at 80 degrees veg oil has the same vioscosity at diesel. The normal method is to use hot engine coolant for the heating which means having 2 fuel tanks and starting the car on starting diesel.
For this to work properly you need a method to switch the fuel feed between the tanks (and also switch the return), having a seperate fuel filter is also recomended, to see what temperature the oil is at a sensor and guage are also required.
I've priced up these bits and they don't half eat into the savings.

I'm still toying with the idea of converting to a 2 tank system so if anyone finds a cheap source of bits let me know!
