ZX TD alternator squeeling

Unread post by ZXturbo_Aura »

hello everyone...
yet again, i need your advice! when startin up and at idle, there is quite severe squeeling coming from the alternator area, the belt tension seems fine and ther is no loose items.when i gently rev it or durin driving, the noise disapears, could the alternator be on its last legs? any advice please...

You need a new alternator belt.
Try remove the belt and run the engine shortly w/o alternator - to trace any other cause for the squeeling.

As Anders says I'm sure you need a new belt. Also these multi-rip s-belts do need to be tighter than the old v-types.
A quick way to test the belt as the cause is to spray a mist of water or WD40 at it while running. If the noise stops it is certain to be the belt.
At very high mileages all the pulleys get a very polished look and even a new belt might only get rid of the squeal for a short while.
I have changed a few belt tensioners over the last year (u/s bearings) so that would be a possibility if the belt doesn't do it.

I recently had the alternator changed on my old ZX. The noise coming from it drowned out the diesel engine noise. So if the alternator is rumbling really loud then start getting a few quotes for a new one. I paid £95 to have a recon fitted while it was at it's MOT.
