Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Hi. My Xantia Hdi has now hit 75000, so its time for the timing belt change. I'll get the accessory belt done at the same time, is there anything else worth doing?
Also any recommendations of garages for the above job in the Newcastle area? Idea of price?

my xantia 1.9 diesel (basic model) is loosing fluid from under the manual
diesel pump,there is a sphere directly underneath could the sphere be
leaking.
how easy is this to check I am not a mechanic but if I have an idea what
I am doing would it be hard to remedy.

All I can think of in that area is the small high pressure pipe that goes to the offside hydraulic suspension top (the bit with the green sphere on). It has a few bends in it and on one of the bends is a bracket that holds it to the side of the wheel arch wall. Sometimes the pipe gets a hole in it underneath this bracket and will just pour out...

In my dismantling of various Xantiae in the past, the ventilation slider control panel has
always been a right fiddle to actually extricate from the surrounding dash frame - IIRC
there's lugs which are part of the main dash over the front of the panel.

Anyhow, a pal wants me to give him a hand replacing the panel on his car as I removed

i usualy just drift them out with an impact socket,then use my old fix or rust daily(f**d) void bush tool to refit them,also the bush with the flandge just raise the edge all the way around with a small cole chissel so it will pass through the eye in the arm

As its says guys, my xantia has developed a nasty habit of locking itself, and today it did so whilst I was washing it, and you guessed it I left the keys in the ignition :oops: , it also deadlocked itself too as I heard the two clunks. Now Citroen have told me they cannot order me a spare key as its too old so the only way to get in is to smash...

Is it easy to fit new glass to door mirror on C5
It looks like either mine fell off or somescum borrowed it.
Can you buy the glass on its own and how does it fix on?

My 2002 model C5 mirror glass just presses into place. No clips or springs.

Glass is available on its own, about £20 at GSF. No idea how much at dealers.

I took out my air filter as a routine check for leaves etc. and found the filter to be quite wet.

I have not gone through any floods or roadside pools as I travel 99.5% of the time on Motorways. So I assume it must be the constant deluge of rain and spray I've travelled through the last few weeks. I noticed too that the performance has dropped...

Up-date.

Since my last post, I dried out the element and greased the edging of the Filter housing cap to seal any gaps as suggested. But not the little drain hole incase any water does get in via the intake.

By doing this (drying the element), the performance has returned. Its too early yet to say whether the sealing job of the bottom cap has...

My Xantia V6 has just dumped all of its LHM on the road. There was a surprising jolt as I pulled away from a roundabout. It drained the tank in about a mile. It looks like the leak is in the vicinity of the front electrovalve.

Fortunately the suspension stayed up, so the RAC could tow it back home.

I think thjat I have read of similar problems...

If the leak is from the electrovalve/firmness regulator, then first check to see that it's not simply the return pipe, these pipes are too short and tend to crack on the bend, Check it!! Slim

The problem was the return hose from the electrovalve which had broken off where it merges to the return hose from the regulator. The LHM disappeared so...

Hi All,

Can anyone help me with some tips/pointers:-

My pressure regulator is cycling about every 5 seconds (the sound is something like someone trying to pull a cork out of a bottle; a kind of whoosing noise - definitely not a clicking sound, by the way).

I changed all the spheres last weekend, with the exception of the centre rear accumulator...

That is interesting! :) Wonder if it was just work-hardened? This can happen with steel (and other metals).

The ball is fetched a violent whack every time cutout occurs, hence the loud click. Has it been work-hardened by that?

Cannot see how it could have been hardened originally; there may be a way. Are some regulators different in that...

After changing the anti-freeze and thermostat on my ZX I have been able to smell coolant. This only occurs after about 5 minutes into the journey then clears up. I initially tought it was coolant evaporating from the thermostat housing which was leaking. But its persisted after fixing the leak (had to buy a genuine Citroen thermostat in the end)...

Brother in Law just called to say that on his way home last night from work was apparently slowing down to some traffic lights and please take into consideration that he is a fairly gentle driver.

The likely source of the gas is leakage from the spheres - so its worth checking the accumulator - try the boot test - get the car to normal height - let the engine idle for a couple of minutes then turn it off and sit in the boot. The back of the car should sink a long way and after 30 seconds or so rise again powered by the accumulator.

I'm sure there's probably a thread on how to do this already but I can't be assed to search for it. :D

The light for the airbag in the seat is constantly lit in my other half's '00 Xantia Activa. I saw a solution in the Lexus forums, but Japan and France are miles apart (Soarer Active aside).

Can anyone help???

With seat mounted side airbags the metal safety clip on the back of the connector plug on the airbag inside the seat is always worth a look / press back in :wink:

Got another problem developing on my Xantia HDi, now that it's rolled over to 250kmiles it obviously thinks it deserves a rest....

Upon startup recently it has stalled a couple of times when pulling off, (and I'm sure it's not just my clutch control...! :? ) also steering tends to a bit stiff for the first 3 point turn in my road, brakes...

Fluid level was checked the other day. As I was driving virtually right past GSF I decided it would be rude not to pop in and buy a couple of litres of LHM, so when I got home it was an excuse to check levels.

I will try and check for air leaks, although that sort of thing isn't usually easy to spot.

Thats right Powerlee.For the others,the 406 has a central display,with MPG,trip,out side temp,time & date,sat nav.It also displays warnings,like airbag defective ,& fuel level low when the gauge light comes on.Also door open etc. :)

I like it when it has 2 or 3 messages to show you, or you open the door & shut it again & it starts scrolling...

My 1.6 hdi Mk2 Xsara has an erratic fuel gauge. Depending on where it is parked depends on the reading when i get back, it reads at least quarter of a tank difference between parking and returning. Been back to dealer 5 times still no joy. Any ideas?

Sounds like its one thing they carried over from the ZX then...

The 1.8 (hatch) does wander up and down as you start a journey, but no more than 1/8 a tank. The TD Estate (fuel tanks different shapes?) was much worse - it would change level by up to 1/4 a tank. ON journeys of about 8-10 miles it would (appear to) have more fuel in it when you got...

Just aquired a nice turbo to recondition ready to fit to my car when the weather eventually gets better.
Anyone out there know where I can buys a service kit with all the seals etc for the turbo unit?

Hi simon, Before you spend time and money on this turbo swap.. are you sure the old one is u/s ? they rarely fail, and there are a few things that can affect their proper operation.. eg boost leaks, blocked fuel filter, extra fuel device air line leaking and a few I've forgotten -but others more knowledgable here can tell you. best wishes Martin....

A few weeks ago I took my xsara to a garage cause of the problems of jumping revs on start-up and the occasional engine cut-off while driving. Anyway, he said the throttle assembly had been played with and reset it back to normal, gave it a good clean and did some other stuff. He said the ECU was trying to balance it out and it was causing the car...

I wonder if the throttle potentiometer has failed. They can be 'Repaired' by cleaning and re-aligning things - and it sounds as though this has been done - possibly not very well.

Could be a new potentiometer will sort things.

Hi, can anyone tell me what size (and thread) the small screws are that secure the brake discs to the hubs as mine are very corroded and will have to be replaced when I fit my new discs and pads.
Also, the front caliper bolts are totally seized and will not come off, so does anyone have any clever ways or doing this too or is it just a case of...

The caliper retaining bolts are torx T55. You won't be able to change the discs without removing them. If they're really stuffed / tight, then you may need to strip the hub off the car (should be possible with the disc in place....) then get the hub in the vice to get some proper leverage on the caliper bolts :twisted:

Are the dipped beams able to be adjusted independantly of the main beam. The reason that I ask is because if I adjust the beam heights so that the lights on 'dipped' give me reasonable visibility without dazzling oncoming cars, the 'main beam' is too high, not by much, but too high for piercing visibility. On the other hand if the lights are set...

It seems that the lift pump in the fuel tank is the HDi weak link and it takes the rest of the fuel system with it when it goes.

In view of this is it worth replacing the lift pump as a precautionary measure? It costs £120-135 although GSF list one at £65 too, I don't know what the difference is.

If it's an easy enough job and worthwhile I would...

Hi guys,

I've been on Citroen-pr.net but I still can't find the part I'm after. So can anyone else have a look for me? Much appreciated, it's:

The auto tensioning pulley for the auxilary belt, after 200k miles it is bound to need replacing, it's squeeks like hell at the moment so i think it's time to change it along with the belt.

my pump spits two teeth off regardless of how many times i put it on (eventually it cuts the two spare teeth off all on its own!), and in my case the problem is the sprung tentioner is twisted, so while it tracks fine round evertyhing else including the pump, the tensioner shifts it just a little tiny bit. It could be that the old pump had play in...

My Son who has a 306 TD with the Bosch system and as many, had problems with starting.

He has renewed the leak off pipes several times over the last few years, where they seem only to last a few months before cracking and then the starting problems start.

He has purchased the replacement lengths of pipe from two sources which are Motor Factors,...

Are the 2.1TD 12 valve motors as reliable as the old 1.9 XUDs? I have heard of the odd one letting go big-time, and am wondering if there is any founadation in this?

From what I can glean, the HDi lumps (other than ancilliaries!) are bullet proof.

Opinions appreciated.

Yeah the 7seat conversion isnt cheap :)

The mod was done to the original car in 1998, the invoice for the conversion was £528. I was happy at the mod costing me £150 so the rest of the car was just in my way.

Are their any sites with XM worshop manuals for the 2.1TD on the net so I can check out fitting a mechanical pump to mine?

1998 ZX TD with 118000 miles; there is a dry bearing noise coming from the auxiliary belt/cambelt area. I've not recently done any work in this area, Belts were changed 18000 miles ago.

What is the most likely cause?

Ok, I'm sure I've read about this before but I'm damned if I call recall where:
my 1996 216k mile Turbo Diesel 1.9 estate has started to hold it's revs high
when I decelerate on the overrun/change gear etc. It's a real pain as it sounds
like I'm a learner driver when it appears to over-rev on gear changes!! :oops:

Replaced the cable on my 97 Xantia TD with a GSF kit one - if the outer cable is still ok you can just use the inner cable as the connector for the pump end is held to the cable with a small screw. Easier than trying to dissamle the existing cable to get the black springy thing off.

I would put aside more then 2 hours for the first one, I would say double it.

Getting the seat out is the easy / heavy part.

Stripping it down, fixing it & then putting it back together is what takes all the time up.

Hi,

Just a quick question for anyone with a Xsara HDi. What temp does the gauge show when the engine is fully warmed up?

I know these often aren't all that accurate, I just want a rough idea. Mine seems to stay around the 73-75 deg C mark, which seems a bit too cold to me?

Got a Xantia Ignition, Remote Key (with 2 buttons) and reciever from Ebay. Fitted them in my Xantia but did not work although led of remote Key flashes!
Can anyone indicate how to re-programm it?

:D Bought a second hand IR fob off eBay for £15 quid and it took me 40 seconds to get it working. The last one I got took me 3 days. It must be a case of BAD fobs and GOOD fobs. In my 1996 AX, the cassette player has ceased working since it broke a tape a few days ago :( So it may need replacing (although the radio still works even without the volume knob which blew off in the wind!).

1) How do you remove it as there appears no screws?

2) It is a 2x9 output so can anyone recommend a cheap replacement? I saw this at...

I'm not sure of the AX layout but the general fitting system is Radio, sleeve - normally supplied with the radio, then a fascia or something.

The sleeve should engage with the teeth on the side of the radio (and may need special tools to remove by depressing the clips). In turn the sleeve is secured in the fascia by bending tabs round its side....

this is the second one i have fitted (not the same car!)on the rear, so you'd think i would have remembered where the pipes go, but with a week having passed from removal to fitting the new one, i have forgotten!!! :shock:

Having owned several diesel powered vehicles in the past I find this a bit odd. For an otherwise excellent engine to need the assistance of the glow plugs when at full working temperature is a little unusual, to my mind.

OK - here we go:

Between about 15 and 70mph, in any gear, if you really put your foot down, the gear lever starts to shake; do it a bit more, and the whole car shudders.

It pulls, starts and runs fine.
There is no mechanical noise.
The vibration is not rhythmic (so not like driveshafts).
It is possible to drive so it does not do it.

Update - decided that one of the New Year's Resolution was to fix it (finally! :o )

Had a look under at the lower mounting - it looked OK, but found that I could move the bottom part of the rubber against the metal shell, so out it came.
None of the rubber was bonded to the metal at all; it hadn;t been for a while, judging by the rust on the...

Over the last week my beloved Xantia has started making what I can only describe as a scraping noise when I brake, sometimes the noise continues when I move off and then disappears. My brakes are fairly new (3 months old). I had two new front tyres fitted 3 weeks a go. I dont know if this noise could be caused by sticking brakes or something, but...

The screen timer relay is located on the steering column panel - it's one of
two relays on the left of the fuse panel - from the illustration I have in the
Cit manual it's the one furthest away from the engine bulkhead LHS on this
panel - the fuses for the mirror heating as well, as per Mr Haynes are F19,
F23 & F27. It's a 5 pin one if that helps...

Morning

Now I've cured one of my cars two annoying traits (the lurchy throttle) I thought I'd approach the other one in a different way. :D

The car sinks quite soon after the engine is turned off (it's not anti sink, and yes I've changed the accumulator, LHM, filters etc and reseated the non return valve in the regulator). The regulator clicks...

On what xantia models was heated door mirrors fitted as standard? been looking for a set for my 1998 mk2 lx been to some salvage yards but non of them have the heated mirrors fitted just the standard type even a sx model i spotted had only had standard 1ns on it :shock:. paul.

On mine it looks like the rivets that attach the wire terminals to the heater grid are corroded. I was going to attempt to fix it with some of that silver conductive paint around the two rivets.
As far as I remember, if you prize the mirror out with a fair amount of force, the mounting circlip lets go before the mirror brakes :wink:

Is it true that the battery on the C5 can be disconnected, & reconnected without needing a code for the Radio. Bought the car second-hand & did not receive a code-told it's not needed. Is this true? The car is a level 2. 2.0 Hdi Year 01.

the problem is not the jump starting,its removing the leads from a very flat battery.
if the battery is completely dead & you get a running car with the jump leads on,start up the dead car & then remove the leads,the battery is flat so it instantly tries to get as much charge as it can which creates a surge & can damage the engine ECU,sometimes...
